The Olympic Flame Arrives in the City of Athens

(CITY OF ATHENS)  Memories of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games are being revived as the torch carrying the sacred Olympic flame arrives in the City of Athens tomorrow, Saturday, March 29, as part of its journey to Beijing. Seven torchbearers will represent the City of Athens in the historic Olympic Torch Relay, which was launched on March 24 in Ancient Olympia. Faithful to the principles of Olympism, Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis will run together with Paralympian Athanasios Barakas. Greece’s largest municipality will be represented by: –         Greek basketball legend Vassilis Goumas–         Father of nine and City of Athens sanitation department employee Markos Spyridonidis–         Therapy Centre for Dependent Individuals (KETHEA) staff-member Theodora Passalidou, who has achieved excellence in sport –         Beach volleyball world champion Vasso Karadasiou–         Distinguished composer and poet Lefteris Papadopoulos–        Sydney 2000 Paralympics gold medalist, sight-impaired world champion athlete and  Greek Paralympian Association deputy chairman Athanasios Barakas–         City of Athens Youth and Sports Organisation chairman, Athens City Councillor, doctor and former international basketball player Vassilis Kikilias City of Athens torchbearers will take the following route: Mavromateon St – Alexandras Ave – Vas. Sofias Ave – Hellenic Parliament – Amalias Ave – Dionysiou Aeropagitou – Acropolis.

The municipality’s torchbearers will cover the distance from Vas. Sofias Ave (Statue of The Runner) to the Hellenic Parliament, in the following order: Vassilis Goumas, Markos Spyridonidis, Theodora Passalidou, Vasso Karadasiou, Lefteris Papadopoulos, Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis with Paralympian Athanasios Barakas, Vassilis Kikilias
