Greece: The Culture Agenda

Mamma Mia, the world-famous show arrives in Greece. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings 3 men from her mother’s past back to the Greek island paradise they last visited 20 years ago.The story of love, laughter and friendship based on ABBA’s timeless songs, is presented at Badminton theatre-Athens until May 25.  Il Trovatore, one of the most popular compositions of Giuseppe Verdi, arrives at the “Bios” cultural centre for 9 performances until May 25. It is the latest production of the theatre company The beggars’ operas and will be performed in a new orchestration.  

Sophocles’Ajax: The new production of the “Road with Trees” company will be staged at the National Theatre until May 15. Martha Frintzila directs the play attributing a folklore dimension to the main character Ajax, by borrowing elements from the popular shadow –

Dance

Persa Stamatopoulou Modern Dance Company’s creation 2027 will be presented at Bios until May 20. It is a piece on the interaction between humans and the environment.

The 7th Dance Festival continues at Roes Theater-Athens until May 10. Omada 58+3 Dance Group presents the dance show “Wonderful World”.

Music

 French poet Arthur Rimbaud’s charismatic and contradictory personality is reanimated in a musical show combining music, words and imagination at the National Theatre until June 1st.

Kings & Queens of the Gypsies: Bringing together on stage 18 Roma artists from four different countries, the Romanian group Fanfare Cioncaria is coming to Athens on May 13 at Pallas.

On May 9 and 11 the Athens Concert Hall presents Simon Boccanegra, the famous opera of Giuseppe Verdi, under the direction of David Alden.

Monday nights dedicated to Music and Literature at Melina Merkouri Foundation are open until May 12.

 Cinema

5th Avant-Garde Film Festival on May 13-22. Organized by the Greek Film Archive Foundation the festival includes the Valie Export’s exhibition at the Athens School of Fine Arts (from May 14 until June 1), films at Trianon cinema, as well as lectures and a round table.

Visual Arts

Zoumboulakis Gallery. Marina Karella’s latest work is being presented until June 7.

The Athens’ Onassis Cardiac Surgery Centre presents the exhibition Pulses of Art II until May 16. The exhibition features 37 works by artists who have been scholars of the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation.

Five Seasons of the Russian Avant-Garde. The Museum of Cycladic Art will host ninety works from the famous Costakis Collection until October 20. The display’s items represent all the groups and movements of the Russian avant-guard (1900s-1930s).

Visit the Paris Belle Époque of Toulouse-Lautrec in juxtaposition with the Athenian Belle Époque in an exhibition at Museum Herakleidon until October 5.

Death as a cultural event” festival at the Athens Cultural Center will be running until May 20. The festival includes an art exhibition, a tree-day symposium (on May 9, 12, 13) and various happenings.
