Thinking about Climate Change in the Mediterranean

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   “The climate change is not just an environmental problem. It has evolved to a major sustainable development issue with clear economic and social implications” notes Konstantinos Katsibardis in his paper entitled “Adapting to climate change: The emerging EU strategy.” The document was presented at the international congress “The Mediterranean city facing climate change innovation, investment, and governance for a low-carbon city,” held earlier this year at the “Technopolis” Cultural Centre in Athens.

Recent climate related catastrophes such as the European heat-wave of 2003, hurricane “Katrina” in 2005, or the forest fires in Greece and California in 2007, have been fuelling public concern. The Mediterranean basin is one of the most vulnerable regions of the planet. The Green Paper “Adapting to climate change in Europe-options for EU action” published by the Commission of the European Communities (on 29.6.2007) attempts to serve the purpose of a coordinated adaptation strategy document in the EU by setting a general policy framework to be discussed and further elaborated in the near future.  Adapting to Climate Change: The Emerging EU Strategy by Konstantinos Katsibardis, lecturer at the Democritus University of Thrace, Faculty of Law, January 2008, 11 pages. Secretariat General of Information: Greece – Major Think Tanks
