Greek Researchers Uncover New Mechanism of Learning & Memory

Researchers at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (ITE) have uncovered an important molecular mechanism that facilitates learning and the formation of memories by the nervous system, according to a paper published in the international scientific periodical of the European Molecular Biology Organization, EMBO Journal. Using the simple nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans, researchers Giannis Voglis and Nekarios Tavernarakis have discovered a new role for a specific class of proteins in mediating learning and memory. The researchers believe that their findings can lead to novel interventions that could reduce or delay age-related brain deterioration in humans.
