World-acclaimed film director, and ambassador of Greek cinema abroad, Theo Angelopoulos died on the 24th January, after being hit by a motorcycle, while filming in Drapetsona, near Pireaus. Winner of several international film awards, Angelopoulos had started shooting his latest film, The Other Sea, earlier this month. His untimely death hit headlines around the globe.
Angelopoulos was born in Athens in 1935. He studied Law at Athens University, and at the beginning of the ‘60s he moved to France where he followed courses in ethnography and studied film at the Institute of Advanced Cinematographic Studies in Paris. Upon returning to Greece, he initially worked as a film critic and in 1970 he completed his first feature film Anaparastassi (Reconstruction).
His next three films make up a trilogy on the history of contemporary Greece: Meres tou ’36 (Days of ’36, 1972), O Thiassos (Travelling Players, 1975) and Oi Kynighoi (The Hunters, 1977), followeed by Megalexandros in 1980.
With these films some of the thematic and stylistic constants of Angelopoulos’ cinema were established – the weight of history, a clinical examination of power, a Brechtian theatricality, wherein the individual has no importance with respect to the group, a rejection of conventional narration in favour of an intentionally broken one, in which stationary cameras and sequence-length shots create an alternative sense of time.
Taxidi sta Kithira (Voyage to Cythera), in 1984, won the Cannes Festival International Critics’ Award for best screenplay, followed by O Melissokomos (The Beekeeper), in 1986, starring Marcello Mastroianni. With Topio stin Omichli (Landscape in the Mist) in 1988 he won the Silver Lion at the Venice Mostra. 
His filmography in the 90s included To meteoro vima tou pelargou (The Suspended Step of the Stork, 1991), followed by To vlemma toy Odyssea (Ulysses’ Gaze, 1995), starring Harvey Keitel – which won the Grand Jury Prize and the International Critics’ Prize at Cannes Festival. 
Then in 1998, he won the Cannes Palme D’Or prize for Mia eoniotita kai mia mera (Eternity and a Day) with Bruno Ganz. In 2003, he began another trilogy with To livadi pou dakryzi (The Wheeping Meadow) followed by H skoni tou chronou (Dust of Time, 2009). The film The Other Sea that he was currently shooting was to complete the trilogy.

World Poetry Day – 2011 Elytis Year

Odysseas Elytis and his work will be the focus of this year’s World Poetry Day, which is celebrated each year on March 21.
The National Book Centre of Greece (EKEBI) launches a poetry campaign including several events.
One of the day’s highlights is an event jointly organized by EKEBI and the Hellenic Authors’ Society which brings together well-known poets and writers such as Katerina Anghelaki-Rooke, Vassilis Vasilikos, Kiki Dimoula and Evgenia Fakinou to recite poems by Odysseas Elytis.
Athenians and citizens of Thessaloniki, Mytillini, Rhodes and Zakynthos will have the opportunity to come across illustrated verses by Elytis as public transport means will feature some of the Nobel laureate’s most beloved and renowned poems. Poetry reading nights, with young poets will also be held in Athens and Thessaloniki.
Moreover in Athens, poet Nanos Valaoritis will present a new theory regarding Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey at the Hellenic American Union, while at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, World Poetry Day will be celebrated through poetry, music and stand-up poetry.
The year 2011 has been designated as an Elytis Year by Culture and Tourism Ministry, in order to mark the 100th anniversary since the birth of the Nobel laureate poet.

Kedzierzawska, Lechki win awards at Thessaloniki Film Festival

Poland’s film director Dorota Kedzierzawska was granted the honorary Golden Alexander award for lifetime achievements at the 51st Thessaloniki International Film Festival that ended on Sunday.
Marek Lechki won the Best Screenplay Award for “Erratum”, the film he also directed and produced.
On show during the festival were Kedzierzawska’s films “I am”, “Devils, Devils” and “Time to Die”. The films illustrate the Polish director’s original, outstanding style and her compassion for the people she portrays and profound respect she has for their choices, festival organizers wrote.
The Thessaloniki International Film Festival is a top film festival of South Eastern Europe. Founded in 1960 as the Week of Greek Cinema, it became international in 1992.

Acropolis Museum receives British award

The Acropolis Museum in Athens (see Photo Gallery) has won the British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW) prestigious global award for the Best Worldwide Tourism Project for 2010.
The prize was presented to Deputy Culture and Tourism Minister George Nikitiades, during a ceremony in London on November 7.
Nikitiades thanked the organizers and the travel writers who voted for the Acropolis Museum, noting that this distinction opens the door for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to their home.
Nikitiades is currently in London with a Greek National Tourism Organisation delegation to participate at the World Travel Market fair, taking place from November 8 to 11.

Poems on the Underground – Greek contemporary poetry

The Press Office of the Greek Embassy in Warsaw promotes the contemporary poetry of Greece and participates to   “Poems on the Underground” events (6-30 September 2010).
“Poems on the Underground” (Wiersze w Metrze) has been inspired by other similar projects  in many cities: Dublin, Paris, New York, Barcelona, Stockholm, Stuttgard and Moscow, organised for the first time in London in 1986.
Wiersze w Metrze promotes contemporary European poetry in public city spaces, through happenings, haiku competition, poetry city game and a performing poetry festival.
Many cultural institutes and embassies participate to the project, which takes place under the auspices of the the mayor of Warsaw, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz.
Greek contemporary poetry will be represented by two acclaimed poets, Kiki Dimoula and Nasos Vagenas.
Kiki Dimoula has recently been awarded the European Literature Prize for 2010. Her poetry has been translated into English, French, German, Swedish, Danish, Spanish and many other languages.
Dimoula’s poetry is haunted by the existential dissolution of the post-world era. Her central themes are hopelessness, insecurity, absence and oblivion. Using diverse subjects and twisting grammar in unconventional ways, she accentuates the power of the words through astonishment and surprise, but always manages to retain a sense of hope.
Nasos Vagenas, professor of Theory and Critique of Literature in the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of Athens, in 2005 was awarded with the State Poetry Prize for his poetic collection ‘Stefanos’.
His poetic work includes the books: ‘Field of Mars’, ‘Biography’, ‘Roxani’s Knees’, ‘Wandering of a non-traveller’, ‘The Fall of the Flying’, ‘Barbarous Odes’ , ‘The Fall of the Flying B’, ‘Dark Ballads and Other Poems’, ‘Stefanos’.
His poetry has been translated into English, German, Italian, Dutch, Romanian, Serbian.
Two poems of Kiki Dimoula and Nasos Vagenas have been translated in polish language for “Wiersze w Metrze” by the professors and students of the Department of Greek Studies of the University of Warsaw (Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies “Artes Liberales”).

“Λεωφορείον ο Πόθος” σε σκηνοθεσία Κριστόφ Βαρλικόφσκι στην Αθήνα

Τον Κριστόφ Βαρλικόφσκι τον γνωρίσαμε το 2008 όταν πήρε στη Θεσσαλονίκη το βραβείο «Νέες Θεατρικές Πραγματικότητες» (στη 2η διοργάνωση των Ευρωπαϊκών Βραβείων Θεάτρου) και παρουσίασε το «Καθαροί πια» της Σάρα Κέιν.
Ακολούθησε λίγους μήνες μετά η, ενταγμένη στο Φεστιβάλ Αθηνών, παράστασή του με το «Krum» του Χ. Λεβίν. Ξέραμε όμως ήδη ότι η Ευρώπη κατατάσσει τον Πολωνό σκηνοθέτη στις ισχυρές, ελπιδοφόρες και πρωτοποριακές δυνάμεις του θέατρου της.
Οσο τον περιμένουμε ξανά φέτος τον Ιούλιο (2-5) στην «Πειραιώς 260», με την πολυσυζητημένη εκδοχή του για το «Λεωφορείον ο Πόθος» του Τ. Ουίλιαμς, με Μπλανς την Ιζαμπέλ Ιπέρ, επιβεβαιώνουμε μέσω του γαλλικού Τύπου και τη «δίδυμη» ιδιότητα ενός διακεκριμένου σκηνοθέτη του λυρικού θέατρου.
Στο Theatre de la Monnaie των Βρυξελλών παρουσιάζεται μέχρι τις 30 του μηνός ο «Μάκβεθ» του Βέρντι, σε δική του σκηνοθεσία, με τον Αμερικανό βαρύτονο Σκοτ Χέντριξ να αναμετράται για πρώτη φορά με τον ρόλο του σεξπιρικού ήρωα, Λαίδη Μάκβεθ τη Γεωργιανή σοπράνο Ιάνο Ταμάρ σε εναλλάξ διανομή με την Αμερικανοολλανδέζα Λίζα Ούμπεν και αρχιμουσικό τον Πολ Ντανιέλ. Και στην παρισινή Οπερα μόλις ολοκλήρωσε τον κύκλο της η, επίσης δικής του σκηνοθεσίας, όπερα του Βάγκνερ «Πάρσιφαλ».
Είναι τα πιο πρόσφατα λυρικά εγχειρήματα του 48χρονου σκηνοθέτη που καταμετρά πολλές συνεργασίες με την Οπερα της Βαρσοβίας («Ντον Κάρλος» του Βέρντι, «Ο Αδαής κι ο τρελός» του Πολωνού συνθέτη Πάουελ Μικιέτιν, «Βασιλιάς Ιμπί» του Πεντερέτσκι, «Βόιτσεκ» του Μπεργκ), με την Οπερα των Παρισίων («Ιφιγένεια εν Ταύροις» του Γκλουκ, «Υπόθεση Μακρόπουλος» του Γιάνατσεκ και «Πάρσιφαλ» του Βάγκνερ), με τη Staatsoper του Μονάχου («Ευγένιος Ονιέγκιν» του Τσαϊκόφσκι) και με το Τεάτρο Ρεάλ της Μαδρίτης («Υπόθεση Μακρόπουλος»). Αλλά και στο Monnaie έχει προηγηθεί η εμβληματική του σκηνοθεσία για τη «Μήδεια» του Κερουμπίνι το 2008, όταν ήδη οι προτάσεις του για τα έργα του Γκλουκ και του Τσαϊκόφσκι στο Παρίσι και το Μόναχο είχαν συμβάλει ώστε στη φήμη του σπουδαίου θεατρικού σκηνοθέτη να προστεθεί κι αυτή ενός από τους πιο καίριους κι ενδιαφέροντες σκηνοθέτες του λυρικού θεάτρου.
Η ρηξικέλευθη γραφή του Βαρλικόφσκι είναι ευδιάκριτη κι εδώ. Το ίδιο και οι αναγνωρίσιμες «εμμονές» του, όπως τουλάχιστον φαίνεται κι από το δημοσίευμα της «Monde» για τον «Μάκβεθ». «Στις Βρυξέλλες, ο Βαρλικόφσκι», διαβεβαιώνει η εφημερίδα, «συνεχίζει να καλλιεργεί με χαρά ό,τι του καταλογίζουν: αφθονία εικόνων κινηματογραφημένων με αμεσότητα και κινηματογραφικών αναφορών που προβάλλονται σε βιντεο-οθόνες στο βάθος της σκηνής. Τραβεστί. Ημίγυμνοι ηθοποιοί. Αντισυμβατικά για την εποχή που διαδραματίζεται η ιστορία κοστούμια με στοιχεία αρτ ντεκό. Λαβαμπό, ένα φετίχ του Πολωνού…». Σ’ ένα λαβαμπό, που παραπέμπει σε ένα είδος βωμού, πλένει τα αιματοβαμμένα χέρια του ο Μάκβεθ.
Κι άλλες καινοτομίες επιφυλάσσει η ματιά του Πολωνού. Το δάσος στο οποίο ο Μάκβεθ συναντά τις μάγισσες γίνεται ένα ψυχρό νοσοκομείο με τοίχους καλυμμένους από τεράστιες οθόνες. Αναλόγως συμβολικές είναι η έναρξη και η λήξη της παράστασης. Προτού ακόμα να σηκωθεί η αυλαία κάποιος ακούγεται να διαβάζει την πραγματική επιστολή που είχε στείλει στη γυναίκα του ένας στρατιώτης στο Βιετνάμ. Η ίδια επιστολή ξανακούγεται στη διάρκεια της όπερας, όσο τα έγχορδα παίζουν σαν ξεκούρδιστα, λίγο προτού η Λαίδη Μάκβεθ πει την πρώτη της λέξη.
Αντίστοιχα η τελευταία πράξη, χαρακτηριστική «του Βαρλικόφσκι, ποιητή της τέχνης των ωραίων διαφυγών», κατά τη «Μοντ», εκτελείται από δύο ωραίους νέους ημίγυμνους άνδρες που χορεύουν σφιχταγκαλιασμένοι μέχρι να πνιγούν από ασφυξία κάτω από ένα πλαστικό κάλυμμα.
Η «Monde» δεν κρύβει ούτε την αμηχανία ούτε το ενδιαφέρον της για τη «σπείρα της έξοχης τρέλας» του Βαρλικόφσκι. Μακάρι λοιπόν να δούμε κι εμαείς προσεχώς στο Φεστιβάλ κι αυτή τη σκηνοθετική του πλευρά.

Blue Flags 2010

Greece was awarded Blue Flags for 421 Beaches and 9 Marinas by the International Blue Flag Jury, winning second place among 41 countries. 
The prefectures of Lasithi (on Crete), and Halkidiki (northern Greece), as well as the islands of Corfu and Rhodes were awarded the highest number of Blue Flags.
The Blue Flag is an internationally recognized standard for quality, develporewarding sustainable development at beaches and marinas, relying on strict criteria, such as water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety.

Economist Joseph Stiglitz to visit Athens

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) Economist and Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz is invited to participate at an open debate, titled “Discussion and debate with Joseph Stiglitz: in or out of the economic crisis?,” organized by the Economist and Hazlis & Rivas conferences, on February 2. 
Prime Minister George Papandreou will inaugurate the conference with an opening address, focusing on the government’s effort to fulfil the twin aim of monetary restructuring and growth.
Ministers, the leader of the opposition New Democracy party, Antonis Samaras as well as representatives of business associations will also participate at the conference.
Meanwhile, Stiglitz has contributed an article (January 25) in the ‘Comment is Free’ section of The Guardian, under the title “A principled Europe would not leave Greece to bleed,” urging Europe to show support for the honesty and integrity of Greece’s government and its efforts not only to bring the budget under control, but to increase transparency of the entire budgetary framework and to reduce corruption.

2nd “London Greek Film Festival 2009” Awards

Hellenic Centre and the London office of the GNTO supported and co-organised the second London Greek Film Festival. Among the people who followed the festival’s events were artists, film makers, producers, members of the Academia, reporters and so on.
The London Greek Film Festival is a unique opportunity for the Greek culture to reach the British public, while contributing in promoting Greek films as well as new film makers and actors.
On Sunday 1^st November the Odysseus awards ceremony took place at the Hellenic Centre. Key speakers at the ceremony were the Head of the Greek Press Office in London Mr Spyros Diamantis and the Head of the GNTO London Office Ms Sophia Panagiotaki.

The Script Award for short film at the 2^nd London Greek Film Festival 2009 was attributed to the script:  “Two Shoes on Wheels” of Stefanos Mondelos, based on the illustrated fairytale of Nikolaos Andrikopoulos (“Ellinika Grammata” editions).
This script was awarded for the second time recently, as it has received the 3^rd Award for Adapted Script for short film by the Hellenic Book Center.

Τα βραβεία του: «2ου London Greek Film Festival»

Με στόχο την προβολή του ελληνικού κινηματογράφου, αλλά και γενικότερα την προβολή της χώρας μας στη Μεγάλη Βρετανία, πραγματοποιήθηκε φέτος στο Λονδίνο για δεύτερη συνεχή χρονιά από τις 30 Οκτωβρίου έως την 1^η Νοεμβρίου το Φεστιβάλ Ελληνικού Κινηματογράφου, το οποίο συνδιοργανώθηκε από το Γ.Τ.Ε. Λονδίνου, το Hellenic Centre και τον ΕΟΤ.
Στα πλαίσια του Φεστιβάλ, το κοινό είχε την ευκαιρία να παρακολουθήσει 41 ταινίες μικρού μήκους – με αγγλικούς υπότιτλους – οι περισσότερες από τις οποίες παρουσιάστηκαν για πρώτη φορά στη Μεγάλη Βρετανία. Στις προβολές που πραγματοποιήθηκαν στις δύο ημέρες που διήρκεσε το Φεστιβάλ, συμπεριλαμβάνονταν ταινίες μυθοπλασίας, επιστημονικής φαντασίας, ντοκυμαντέρ, ταινίες κινουμένων σχεδίων (animation), ταινίες μικρού μήκους, και video art. Επίσης, παρουσιάστηκαν σενάρια για ταινίες επιστημονικής φαντασίας και για ταινίες μικρού μήκους.
Την πρώτη μέρα του Φεστιβάλ (Παρασκευή 30 Οκτωβρίου) παραγωγοί και σκηνοθέτες είχαν την ευκαιρία να λάβουν μέρος στο Informational Networking Event με τίτλο Shooting in Greece: Ένα εργαστήρι, στα πλαίσια του οποίου, οι συμμετέχοντες είχαν τη δυνατότητα να ενημερωθούν σε βάθος από τους αρμοδίους και να λάβουν κάθε είδους πληροφορίες όσον αφορά την κινηματογράφηση στην Ελλάδα, (επίσης πληροφορίες για ελληνικές εταιρείες παραγωγής, για σημεία ειδικού ενδιαφέροντος στην Ελλάδα, για χρηματοδοτήσεις κλπ). Το Φεστιβάλ περιλάμβανε επίσης συζητήσεις, παρουσιάσεις σεναρίων και διοργάνωση εργαστηρίων (workshops).
Την Κυριακή 1^η Νοεμβρίου, ημέρα λήξης του Φεστιβάλ, απονεμήθηκαν στο Hellenic Centre τα βραβεία Odysseus. Κεντρικοί ομιλητές στην τελετή απονομής των βραβείων ήταν ο Σπύρος Διαμαντής, επικεφαλής του Γ.Τ.Ε. Λονδίνου, η Σοφία Παναγιωτάκη, Διευθύντρια του Γραφείου ΕΟΤ και ο Διευθυντής του Φεστιβάλ, Χρήστος Προσύλης.
Το Βραβείο Σεναρίου μικρού μήκους ταινίας στο 2nd London Greek Film Festival 2009 έλαβε το σενάριο “Δυό Παπούτσια με Καρότσι”  του Στέφανου Μονδέλου, βασισμένο στο ομώνυμο εικονογραφημένο παραμύθι του Νικόλαου Ανδρικόπουλου (εκδ. Ελληνικά Γράμματα). Το συγκεκριμένο σενάριο βραβεύεται για δεύτερη φορά, μετά το 3ο Βραβείο Διασκευασμένου Σεναρίου για ταινία μικρού μήκους που έλαβε εφέτος, στον Διαγωνισμό Διασκευασμένου Σεναρίου που διοργανώνεται για πέμπτη συνεχή χρονιά από το Εθνικό Κέντρο Βιβλίου.

Europejska Nagroda dla Greckiej gry Komputerowej Zapobiegającej Narkotykom / Ευρωπαϊκό Βραβείο στο Ελληνικό Παιχνίδι για Η/Υ “Αντιστάσου”

W dniu 26 listopada w Warszawie została przyznana „III Europejska Nagroda Zapobiegania Narkotykom” Rady Europy, w ramach działalności „Grupy Pompidou”, która zajmuje się koordynacją działań 35 państw członkowskich grupy – wśród, których znajduje się również Grecja – w walce przeciwko nadużywaniu oraz nielegalnemu handlowi substancjami narkotykowymi.

Jednym z trzech programów nagrodzonych podczas uroczystości rozdania nagród był grecki program „Resist” („Staw Opór”), który stworzyli członkowie Centrum „Elpida” („Nadzieja”) z Salonik, centrum zapobiegania nadużywania substancji uzależniających.

Według jury konkursu, program „Resist” rozpowszechnia filozofię zapobiegania narkotykom i umacnia czynniki ochronne, by stworzyć pozytywne sposoby przeciwdziałania różnym rodzajom presji, jakim są poddawani młodzi ludzie w wieku od 12 do 19 lat oraz, by pomóc im powiedzieć „nie” dla zachowań i substancji, które prowadzą do pobudzenia i uzależnienia”.

Według jego twróców, program „Resist” jest grą komputerową, w trakcie której „gracz towarzyszy bohaterowi gry w domu, w kontaktach z rodzicami, w szkole, w relacjach z kolegami klasowymi, na ulicy oraz na imprezach wraz z jego przyjaciółmi. Gra jest wyzwaniem dla młodych ludzi i stwarza możliwość zobaczenia, jak można stawiać czoło różnym codziennym sytuacjom i przemyśleć możliwości reakcji oraz zobaczyć możliwe konsekwencje dokonanych wyborów.

Oprócz greckiego programu nagrodzone zostały również programy „Sweep the weed out of the gate” pochodzący z Warny (Bułgaria) oraz program «Battle of the West» z Leiden (Holandia)

Kryterium przynania nagrody europejskim programom przez jury, które rozpatrzyło 34 projekty uczestniczące z 15 państw europejskich, był ich inowacyjny charakter, udział w inicjatywie młodych ludzi oraz zastosowanie programu w praktyce . (ΑΚΟΛΟΥΘΕΙ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΚΕΙΜΕΝΟ)
