“Kali Patrida” Greek Communities of Political Refugees in Eastern Europe

By the end of the Greek Civil War (1946-49), Greece was in a tragic state. The human loss and physical destruction incurred in this conflict was added to the suffering and damage already accumulated during World War II and the occupation. One of the most dramatic consequences of the Civil War was the odyssey of thousands of Greek men, women and children who settled in Eastern Europe and the USSR – mainly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarianism and Democracy is hosting until December 31, 2011, an exhibition titled Kali Patrida… Greek Communities of political refugees in Eastern Europe.
The exhibition draws on material (printed and audiovisual) from many sources, both from Greece and abroad in order to shed light on particular themes in the lives of political refugees: their establishment in the host countries (East Germany, Bulgaria, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and Uzbekistan); their children’s education, their communities, their efforts to preserve their distinctive cultural heritage as well as their repatriation.
“Kali patrida” meaning “Happy Homecoming,” is actually a wish political refugees shared, expressing their nostalgia for their homeland.

“European Day of Languages” (24-29/9/2011) – Greek events organized by the Press Office

The Press Office of the Greek Embassy in Warsaw once again participated in “European Day of Languages 2011” events, that took place in Warsaw from 24 till 29 September and aimed to inform Poles about the cultural and linguistic heritage of European countries.

Organizers were over eighteen countries, members of EUNIC Cluster Warsaw (European Union National Institutes of Culture), among them the Press Office of the Greek Embassy, cultural institutes and embassies of European countries, as well as  other institutions such as the European Commission Representation in Poland, the European Parliament Communication Office in Poland, the Polish Foundation for the Development of the Educational System, the University of Warsaw etc.
The program (www.edj.waw.pl) consisted of demo language lessons, seminars, European film festival, theatre workshops, city game, language picnic etc.
The Greek program of the events included:
Demo lesson of Greek language, that took place in the Institute of Foreign Languages of the University of Warsaw on the 27^th of September, as part of the demo-lessons of  languages and cultures of the participating countries.
Greek info stand, which was set in the University Campus of the Old Library of the University of Warsaw and provided touristic information on the 27^th September from 9 am until 3 pm.
The film “The Trojan Women” directed by Michael Cacoyannis (1971) was shown at the Russian Cultural Institute on the 29^th September, during the film festival organized in the Russian Cultural Institute (26-29 September) and the cinema Alchemia (25^th September):
A wide range of other events were organized during the week (24-29 September): a two-day conference “Language Competences for Professional and Personal Success inEurope”, entertainment activities, theatre workshops, city games, competitions on a special website. This year`s project attracted many students and other visitors and it can be considered as a perfect opportunity to experience the Greek language and culture.

Farewell to Filmmaker Michael Cacoyannis

Internationally acclaimed film director, screenwriter and producer Michael Cacoyannis died yesterday, at 89.
The director of the award-winning films Zorba the Greek and Stella, Michael Cacoyannis was nominated five times for an Academy Award (Oscar), receiving the Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film nominations for Zorba the Greek and two nominations in the Foreign Language Film category for Electra and Iphigenia.
Most of his work is rooted in classical texts, particularly those of the Greek tragedian Euripides.
A pioneer of post-war Greek cinema and director of international hits, Cacoyannis refused a career in Hollywood, opting for ‘quality’ theater. In 2003, he founded the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation for the study and support of the film and theater arts.

“Ακτινοβολία. Ιστορία της Μαρίας Σκλοντόφσκα-Κιουρί” στο Ίδρυμα Μιχάλης Κακογιάννης

To έργο αφηγείται την ιστορία της Maria Skłodowska Curie μέσα από τον διάλογο ανάμεσα σε δυο χαρακτήρες: την Μαρία και την μικρότερή της κόρη την Εύα. Στο έργο εισάγονται και άλλα πρόσωπα μέσα από μια σειρά μονολόγων της ηρωίδας και από φωτογραφίες που προβάλλονται στο φόντο. Στην προβολή παρουσιάζεται επίσης και το πανόραμα των βουνών που περιβάλλουν την δράση: η ταράτσα του σανατόριου στο Sancellemoz, στις γαλλικές Άλπεις το 1934, όταν η Μαρία Κιουρί πήγε για να θεραπευτεί από μια μυστηριώδη ασθένεια. Εκεί, την προσέχει η κόρη της, Εύα, που κατά την διάρκεια της διαμονής τους, παίρνει συνέντευξη από την μητέρα της, προκειμένου να γράψει ένα βιβλίο για αυτήν. Η Μαρία ξαναθυμάται τις σπουδές της, τις προσπάθειες και τους κόπους της , τα πειράματα και τις ανακαλύψεις, καθώς επίσης και τον έρωτά της με τον Pierre Curie και τον Paul Langevin και την φιλία της με τον Albert Einstein. Η ασθένειά της αποδεικνύεται  ότι  είναι αποτέλεσμα υπερέκθεσης  στην ακτινοβολία. Πεθαίνει, ενώ ονειρεύεται την επιστροφή στην Πολωνία. Στο τέλος του έργου μαθαίνουμε για την απόλυτη αναγνώριση και τις τιμές  που δέχεται η Maria Skłodowska Curie μετά θάνατον: η κηδεία της πραγματοποιήθηκε με όλες τις τιμές και το σώμα της εναποτέθηκε στο Πάνθεον του Παρισιού. 
Η παράσταση είναι μια παραγωγή του «Teatr Polski» από το Τορόντο του Καναδά. Οι ηθοποιοί Μαρία Νοβοτάρσκα και Αγκάτα Πολιτόφσκα προέρχονται από το φημισμένο θέατρο «Σλοβάτσκι» της Κρακοβίας.
 Η πρεμιέρα της «Ακτινοβολίας» έγινε το 2006 και έκτοτε το έργο έχει παιχτεί σε πολλές χώρες αποσπώντας πολύ θετικές κριτικές. Πρόκειται για μια παράσταση  με ζωντανό χαρακτήρα, έντονη συναισθηματική δράση και εξαιρετική εκπαιδευτική αξία για τους νεώτερους θεατές.
Η παράσταση παρουσιάζεται στα πολωνικά με ελληνικούς υπέρτιτλους.

Farewell to Iakovos Kambanellis

Iakovos Kambanellis, one of the most prominent figures of post-war Greek literature, died yesterday at the age of 89.

Kambanellis was born on the island of Naxos and studied design in Athens. During the Nazi occupation of Greece in WW2 he became actively involved in the Resistance movement. He was arrested by the German occupying forces in 1943 and was sent to Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp, from which he was liberated by the Allied Forces in 1945.

His legendary Mauthausen novel, which describes his experience as a concentration camp survivor, was set to music by Mikis Theodorakis and became one of the most influential works in Greek culture.

He wrote more than twenty plays and twelve film scripts, including Stella by Michael Cacoyannis and The Dragon by Nikos Koundouros. In an announcement, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism expressed deep regret for Kambanellis’ passing, noting that the deceased defined the style of post-war Greek theatre, adding that his works were deeply loved by the Greek audience, as they soberly and truthfully depicted the reality of life in Greece, its difficulties and joys.

World Poetry Day – 2011 Elytis Year

Odysseas Elytis and his work will be the focus of this year’s World Poetry Day, which is celebrated each year on March 21.
The National Book Centre of Greece (EKEBI) launches a poetry campaign including several events.
One of the day’s highlights is an event jointly organized by EKEBI and the Hellenic Authors’ Society which brings together well-known poets and writers such as Katerina Anghelaki-Rooke, Vassilis Vasilikos, Kiki Dimoula and Evgenia Fakinou to recite poems by Odysseas Elytis.
Athenians and citizens of Thessaloniki, Mytillini, Rhodes and Zakynthos will have the opportunity to come across illustrated verses by Elytis as public transport means will feature some of the Nobel laureate’s most beloved and renowned poems. Poetry reading nights, with young poets will also be held in Athens and Thessaloniki.
Moreover in Athens, poet Nanos Valaoritis will present a new theory regarding Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey at the Hellenic American Union, while at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, World Poetry Day will be celebrated through poetry, music and stand-up poetry.
The year 2011 has been designated as an Elytis Year by Culture and Tourism Ministry, in order to mark the 100th anniversary since the birth of the Nobel laureate poet.

Christmas in Greece

Traditionally, the Christmas holiday period in Greece lasts 12 days, until January 6, which marks the celebration of the Feast of the Holy Theophany (Epiphany).
There are many customs associated with the Christmas holidays, some of which are relatively recent, “imported” from other parts of the world (like eating turkey on Christmas day and decorating the Christmas tree).
The modern Christmas tree entered Greece in the luggage of the country’s first king, Otto of Greece, who ascended to the throne in 1833 – yet, the tree did not become popular until the 1940s.
In the past, Greeks decorated small Christmas boats in honour of St. Nicholas. Today, they are increasingly choosing to decorate boats, instead of trees, reviving this age-old Christmas tradition. Undoubtedly, celebrating Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Greece is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Xmas: A Word of Greek Origin
Where did “Xmas” come from? Some transliterations of Greek spell Christos as “Xristos.” The “X” stood in for the first letter of the word Christ (ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ).
“Xmas” has been used for hundreds of years in religious writing, where the X represents the Greek letter X (chi). While in modern times Xmas is regarded as a kind of slang, it was originally considered to be a perfectly respectful.
Christmas (“Χριστούγεννα”), the Feast of the Nativity of Jesus is one of the most joyful days of the Greek Orthodox Church.
Christmas Elves
Greece’s hobgoblins are called “kallikántzari,” friendly but troublesome little creatures which look like elves. Kallikantzari live deep down inside the earth and come to surface only during the 12-day period from Christmas until Epiphany. While on the earth’s surface, they love to hide in houses, slipping down chimneys and frightening people in various ways.
Throughout Greece, there are customs and numerous rituals performed to keep these hobgoblins away. In Epirus, residents place twelve spindles in front of the fireplace to prevent the kalikantzari from climbing down the chimney.
On Christmas Eve, in the town of Grevena, people place a large log in the corner of the house and set it alight. As the fire burns, lasting until the Feast of the Epiphany, it protects the family from the naughty kalikantzari. On the island of Cephalonia, women burn incense at the front door of their houses making the sign of the cross in order to repel these undesirable “guests.”
The “kallikántzari” disappear on the day of Epiphany when all the waters are blessed, and they return to the earth’s core.
Sweets & Treats
Traditional culinary delights symbolise good luck in the New Year and adorn the white-clothed tables. “Melomakarona” (honey cookies) and “kourabiedes” (sugar cookies with almonds) are the most characteristic. In the past, melomakarona were made exclusively for Christmas, while kourabiedes were prepared for the New Year.
Today, this distinction is not observed anymore and both melomakarona and kourabiedes are prepared and consumed throughout the festive season.
Another traditional custom that dates back to the Byzantine times is the slicing of the Vassilopita (St.Basil’s pie or New Year Cake). The person who finds the hidden coin in his/her slice of the cake, is considered to be lucky for the rest of the year.
At the meal table there is also a special decorated round loaf called “Vasilopsomo” or St. Basil’s bread -which is really identical in form to the “Christopsomo” or “Christ bread” eaten on Christmas Day – and the “Photitsa” or “Lights’ bread” that is eaten on Epiphany.
“Kalanda” or Carols
The singing of Christmas carols (or kalanda, in Greek) is a custom which is preserved in its entirety to this day. On Christmas and New Year Eve, children go from house to house in groups of two or more singing the carols, accompanied usually by the sounds of the musical instrument “triangle,” but also guitars, accordions, lyres and harmonicas.

A Christmas spirit is taking over the squares and streets of the country’s major cities, as local authorities organise a variety of events and festivities, culminating with New Year’s Eve countdown parties in central squares.
Festivities in Athens revolve around Syntagma Square and its Christmas tree, with daily concerts throughout the season, while the National Garden turns into storybook Magical Forest for children.
Thessaloniki runs the country’s biggest Christmas village: the Helexpo pavilions are hosting Christmas Magic City, featuring shows, workshops and a big Christmas market.
The north-western city of Kastoria celebrates with “ragoutsaria,” the local carnival that starts on New Year’s Day, with every neighbourhood forming a carnival group, complete with brass band. In Agios Nikolaos, Crete, the New Year will come from the sea, with the New Year’s Eve party at the port, and Santa arriving on a boat.
…And Holiday Performances
Venues and clubs participate in the Christmas spirit with special holiday performances.
The National Opera’s Christmas rich programme includes the Snow Queen ballet and Hansel and Gretel opera for children.
The Athens Concert Hall hosts the Bolshoi Theatre Academy on December 22-29, in a much-awaited performance of the Nutcracker, and the London Community Gospel Choir on December 27-28.
The recently inaugurated Onassis Cultural Centre presents Jean-Baptiste Thiérrée and Victoria Chaplin in their phantasmagoric yet poetic Invisible Circus, on December 28-30 and January 1-2.
At the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, on December 27 & 28, the Sounds of Christmas Go Baroque: a festive concert featuring Baroque Concertos.

8ο Συνέδριο Ιταλικής Εταιρείας Νεοελληνικών Σπουδών (Παλέρμο, 24-26/11/2010)-Μεγάλοι ποιητές και νεοελληνιστές έδωσαν το “παρών”

Πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Παλέρμο της Σικελίας, από τις 24 ως τις 26 Νοεμβρίου, το 8ο Συνέδριο της Ένωσης Ιταλών Νεοελληνιστών. “Η Ελλάδα στον καθρέφτη, πολυπλοκότητα και επικαιρότητα του νεοελληνικού πολιτισμού”, το θέμα της συνάντησης.
Κατά την τριήμερη συνάντησή τους, στην πρωτεύουσα της Σικελίας, οι ερευνητές, μελετητές και πανεπιστημιακοί καθηγητές Νέων Ελληνικών, στην Ιταλία, είχαν την ευκαιρία να ανταλλάξουν εμπειρίες, να προτείνουν νέα λογοτεχνικά ερεθίσματα προς εμβάθυνση και αξιοποίηση, αλλά και να εκφράσουν τις απόψεις τους για το μέλλον του επιστημονικού τους τομέα.
Στους συμμετέχοντες στο συνέδριο, ο ποιητής Τίτος Πατρίκιος, οι γνωστοί νεοελληνιστές Μάριο Βίττι και Βιντσέντσο Ρότολο, οι φιλόλογοι Παναγιώτης Μαστροδημήτρης και Ερατοσθένης Καψωμένος, η καθηγήτρια νέων ελληνικών του πανεπιστημίου του Παλέρμο, Ρενάτα Λαβανίνι και η Πάολα Μαρία Μινούτσι, του πανεπιστημίου Λα Σαπιέντσα της Ρώμης.
Ο Μάριο Βίττι, θέλησε να αναφερθεί στο “τι απομένει από τους Φράγκους και τους Ελληνες της Κωνσταντινούπολης”, με πτυχές καθαρά βιωματικές, από την στιγμή που και ο ίδιος κατάγεται από μεικτή οικογένεια της Πόλης. “Μετά την κατάργηση της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας, η Τουρκία του Κεμάλ Ατατούρκ, έθεσε τόσα γραφειοκρατικά εμπόδια στους μη μουσουλμάνους πολίτες, που τελικά, κατάφερε να τους αποκλείσει, από πολλά σημαντικά επαγγέλματα”, τόνισε ο Βίττι.
Ο Τίτος Πατρίκιος, στην ανακοίνωσή του με τίτλο “Γράφοντας μετά το Άουσβιτς”, υπογράμμισε ότι “γράφει κανείς, κατά της εξουσίας που φτιάχνει τα στρατόπεδα αλλά που μπορεί και να τα προετοιμάζει. Γράφει κατά της εξουσίας, που, συχνά, προσπαθεί να επιβάλλει,στην τέχνη, ακόμη και τους χρόνους με τους οποίους πρέπει να εκφράζεται”.
Ο δε καθηγητής Βιντσέντσο Ρότολο, από τους σημαντικότερους διευθυντές του ιταλικού πολιτιστικού ινστιτούτου της Αθήνας και καθηγητής -στην συνέχεια- νέων ελληνικών στο Παλέρμο, αναφέρθηκε στην σημερινή πραγματικότητα των νεοελληνικών σπουδών: “Τα τελευταία χρόνια, στην Ιταλία, παρατηρείται μείωση των πανεπιστημιακών εδρών νέων ελληνικών. Είναι όμως βασικής σημασίας η οικονομική υποστήριξη από μέρους της Ελλάδος-η οποία συνεχίζεται-όπως και το ότι αποστέλλονται λέκτορες από το Υπουργείο παιδείας, για την βοήθεια στην διδασκαλία της γλώσσας”, παρατήρησε ο Ρότολο.
Η Κατερίνα Καρπινάτο, από το πανεπιστήμιο της Βενετίας, κατά την παρέμβασή της, τόνισε την ανάγκη συνεχούς ενημέρωσης και εμβάθυνσης των καθηγητών, με την πολύτιμη αρωγή και του διαδικτύου, το οποίο μπορεί να προσφέρει μια πρώτη, γενική εικόνα, διαθέσιμων βιβλιογραφιών και ιστορικών μαρτυριών”.
Ιδιαίτερη, εμβληματική η περίπτωση της ιταλίδας Γκάια Τζακάνι. Εμαθε νέα ελληνικά στην Ιταλία, δίδαξε στο πανεπιστήμιο της Ρώμης και στη συνέχεια “μετανάστευσε” στην Κύπρο, στο πανεπιστήμιο της Λευκωσίας. Ένα εύγλωττο παράδειγμα της ανοικτής και γόνιμης φύσης, της καλώς εννοούμενης “πολιτιστικής παγκοσμιοποίησης”.
Το συνέδριο του Παλέρμο, φιλοξένησε, επίσης, δημοσιογράφους, ιστορικούς, μεταφραστές, που μορφώθηκαν και ανέπτυξαν την κριτική τους οξυδέρκεια, φοιτώντας στις έδρες νέων ελληνικών των ιταλικών πανεπιστημίων. Σε ότι αφορά, επίσης, τον κύριας σημασίας τομέα της πολιτιστικής διπλωματίας, η ακόλουθος τύπου Μαρία Μονδέλου, αναφέρθηκε λεπτομερώς στη χρήσιμη αξιοποίηση των γραφείων τύπου ως γέφυρες που να συνδέουν την Ελλάδα με τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο.
Η καθηγήτρια Πάολα Μαρία Μινούτσι, παρουσίασε το έργο του σκηνοθέτη καθηγητή και ποιητή, Μιχάλη Πιερή από την Κύπρο, το οποίο χάρη στις μεταφράσεις της διαδόθηκε και στο ιταλικό αναγνωστικό κοινό.
Οι εργασίες, συνέπεσαν, τις ημέρες αυτές, με τις φοιτητικές κινητοποιήσεις, στα ιταλικά πανεπιστήμια, με αίτημα να διατηρηθούν οι χρηματοδοτήσεις, για την δημόσια παιδεία της χώρας. Ένα θέμα που αφορά άμεσα και τις έδρες νέων ελληνικών, οι οποίες, αποδεικνύουν ότι το κριτήριο για την υποστήριξη και την προαγωγή της διδασκαλίας, δεν μπορεί να είναι αποκλειστικά ποσοτικό, αλλά πρέπει να λαμβάνει σοβαρά υπόψη και την ποιοτική παράμετρο, η οποία συμβάλλει στη μόρφωση και καλλιέργεια του κάθε σκεπτόμενου πολίτη.

Εκδηλώσεις “Ευρωπαϊκής Ημέρας Γλωσσών” (Βαρσοβία, 20-27/9/2010)- Συμμετοχή Γραφείου Τύπου Βαρσοβίας

Οι φετινές εκδηλώσεις της «Ευρωπαϊκής Ημέρας Γλωσσών 2010» πραγματοποιήθηκαν στη Βαρσοβία από τις 20 έως τις 27 Σεπτεμβρίου.
Το Γραφείο Τύπου, για μία ακόμη χρονιά, συμμετείχε στη διοργάνωση των εκδηλώσεων προβολής των ευρωπαϊκών γλωσσών, εκδηλώσεις που στοχεύουν στην ενημέρωση του πολωνικού κοινού για τον γλωσσικό και πολιτιστικό πλούτο των χωρών της Ευρώπης. Η Ευρωπαϊκή Ημέρα Γλωσσών θεσπίστηκε από το Συμβούλιο της Ευρώπης το 2001.
Διοργανωτές των εκδηλώσεων ήταν δεκατρείς χώρες, μέλη του EUNIC Cluster Βαρσοβίας (European Union National Institutes for Culture): Ελλάδα (Γραφείο Τύπου Ελληνικής Πρεσβείας), Εσθονία (Πρεσβεία Εσθονίας), Ιρλανδία (Πρεσβεία Ιρλανδίας), Μεγ. Βρετανία (British Council), Βέλγιο (Πρεσβεία Βελγίου), Δανία (Πολιτιστικό Ινστιτούτο Δανίας), Γερμανία (Goethe-Institut), Πορτογαλία (Ινστιτούτο Camoes), Γαλλία (Γαλλικό Ινστιτούτο), Ιταλία (Ιταλικό Ινστιτούτο), Αυστρία (Αυστριακό Ινστιτούτο), Ρουμανία (Ρουμανικό Ινστιτούτο), Ρωσία (Ρωσικό Κέντρο Επιστήμης και Πολιτισμού).
Στη διοργάνωση συμμετείχαν, επίσης, το EUNIC Cluster Βαρσοβίας, η Αντιπροσωπεία της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής στην Πολωνία, το πολωνικό Ίδρυμα για την Ανάπτυξη του Εκπαιδευτικού Συστήματος, το Πανεπιστήμιο Βαρσοβίας, το Εκπαιδευτικό Τμήμα του Δήμου Βαρσοβίας, το Κρατικό Εθνογραφικό Μουσείο στη Βαρσοβία, η Δημόσια Βιβλιοθήκη της συνοικίας Praga (Δήμος Βαρσοβίας), το πολωνικό Κέντρο για την Ανάπτυξη της Εκπαίδευσης, η πολωνική Κρατική Επιτροπή για την Πιστοποίηση της Επάρκειας της Πολωνικής ως Ξένης Γλώσσας. Οι εκδηλώσεις τελούσαν υπό την αιγίδα του πολωνικού Υπουργείου Εθνικής Παιδείας, του πολωνικού Υπουργείου Επιστήμης και Ανώτερης Εκπαίδευσης, της Δημάρχου Βαρσοβίας και της Πρυτάνεως του Πανεπιστημίου Βαρσοβίας.
Η απήχηση των εκδηλώσεων τις προηγούμενες χρονιές οδήγησε τους διοργανωτές στην απόφαση για την φετινή διοργάνωση πολυήμερων εκδηλώσεων, με ποικίλο περιεχόμενο.

Η ελληνική συμμετοχή στις εκδηλώσεις, η οποία περιελάμβανε μεταξύ άλλων φεστιβάλ ταινιών, μάθημα ελληνικής γλώσσας, σεμινάριο για το ζεϊμπέκικο, ελληνικό περίπτερο κ.ά., διοργανώθηκε από τη Γραμματέα Επικοινωνίας, Μαρία Μονδέλου.

Festival of Greek Culture in Tarnowskie Gory (Silesia) 11-28 May 2010

A festival of Greek Culture is taking place in Tarnowskie Gory of Silesia region (southern Poland) from the 11th till the 28th May. The 13th edition of the festival, organized by the Cultural Centre of Tarnowskie Gory, is under the auspices of the Greek Embassy in Warsaw and has been realised with the cooperation of the Press Office.
Various aspects of Greek culture are promoted during the festival, which includes a rich programme of events of high quality, such as lectures, music, cinema, theatre, performances, concerts, dance, discussion-panels, painting, cuisine. Many Greeks that live in Poland and work successfully in various fields (artistic, scientific or economic), participate in this festival, presenting the results of their efforts.
At the official opening of the festival on the 14th May, a message by the Greek Ambassador, Gabriel Coptsidis, who praised the great interest of cultural institutions towards Greece and the high level of their knowledge about Greek history and culture, was read. The Press Attache, Maria Mondelou, has hold a speech, stressing the importance of cultural events dedicated to Greece that are successfully organised in Poland.

Tarnogórskie Makaty, w tym roku poświęcone będą w całości Grecji, a zwłaszcza spuściźnie kulturowej starożytnej Grecji, jak i dorobkowi w tej sferze współczesnego państwa greckiego. Imprezy w ramach XIII Tarnogórskich Makat odbędą się w dniach od 11 do 28 maja. Poprzednie edycje festiwalu poświęcone były m.in. kulturze: Japonii, Litwy, Czech, Węgier i Izraela. Głównym celem wydarzenia jest przybliżenie mieszkańcom naszego miasta i nie tylko, dziedzictwa innych kultur.
Tegoroczny program imprezy zapowiada się bardzo ciekawie. Serdecznie zapraszamy do udziału.

Koncert Anny Faber z zespołem
Artystka jest jedyną harfistką w kraju, która wychodzi poza konwencje muzyki klasycznej. Styl muzyki, który wykonuje, to Etno-pop, inspirowany muzyką irlandzką, bałkańską i polską. Podczas koncertu będziemy mieli okazję usłyszeć największe przeboje muzyki greckiej m.in. Greka Zorbę, Dzieci Pireusu, Manolis Lidakis oraz inne pieśni śpiewane po grecku, w aranżacjach na harfę z towarzyszeniem fletów, gitary basowej, instrumentów perkusyjnych, klawiszy i skrzypiec.

Koncert greckich ballad i poezji śpiewanej w wykonaniu Iliasa Wrazasa. Najchętniej śpiewa pieśni Mikisa Theodorakisa. W 1999 roku został uhonorowany nagrodą „Prometeusz” za szczególne zasługi dla kultury polskiej, przyznaną przez Ogólnopolskie Stowarzyszenie Estradaowe.

Cacoyannis Foundation: A new Cultural Centre

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias and Cyprus President Demetris Christofias officially inaugurated on March 9, the “Michael Cacoyannis Foundation,” housed in an Athens downtown building.
The Foundation’s building is designed to serve as a cultural centre for performing arts and is meant to preserve Cacoyannis oeuvre for future generation.
The official inauguration is to be followed by a series of events, including a costume and photography exhibition from Cacoyannis’s work for the cinema, opera and theatre.
Cypriot-born Michael Cacoyannis is the director of world acclaimed films, among which Stella, Electra, Zorba the Greek and The Trojan Women.

Academy of Greek Filmmakers

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) Costa Gavras, Michael Cacoyannis, Nikos Koundouros and Dinos Katsouridis are honorary members of the newly established Academy of Greek Filmmakers (December 2009).
The Academy – which includes members of the different professions related to filmmaking – will primarily assume the responsibility of bestowing awards for Greek productions.
The Greek version follows the example of other countries (U.S.A., Germany, Spain, etc.) where the Academy has established itself as an independent body with successful work in promoting local productions. Besides awards, the 108 founding members of the Academy of Greek Filmmakers will contribute to the international promotion of Greek cinema and filmmakers’ training.

The book of professor Ilias Wrazas

in Warsaw, held the event entitled “Greek Temptations” (Kuszenie Grekow), on Thursday November 5^th.
Ilias Vrazas, professor of modern Greek literature in Wroclaw University, presented his book “The Saviour of God. Tempations of Nikos Kazantzakis”. The book is focusing on Kazantzakis’ “Askitiki” (Salvatores Dei).
The presentation was moderated by the translator of Greek and English literature Ewa T. Szyler.
Following the presentation, Ilias Vrazas (song, guitar) and Isidoros Papadakis (violoncello, bouzuki) performed songs by contemporary Greek composers (Theodorakis, Markopoulos, etc.).
The opening of Michalis Hrisoulidis’ drawings exhibition was also held on the evening of the event. Michalis Hrisoulidis is a painter and stage designer, whose work “Thanatos” illustrates Ilias Vrazas book.

«Ο Σωτήρας του Θεού. Οι πειρασμοί του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη»

 Το Γραφείο Τύπου και Επικοινωνίας Βαρσοβίας – σε συνεργασία με το Αυστριακό Πολιτιστικό Ινστιτούτο της Βαρσοβίας– οργάνωσαν την Πέμπτη 5 Νοεμβρίου 2009 εκδήλωση με τίτλο «Ελληνικοί Πειρασμοί» (Kuszenie Grekow).
Ο Ηλίας Βράζας, καθηγητής σύγχρονης ελληνικής λογοτεχνίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Wroclaw, παρουσίασε το βιβλίο του «Ο Σωτήρας του Θεού. Οι πειρασμοί του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη», βιβλίο που πραγματεύεται την «Ασκητική» του Καζαντζάκη (Salvatores Dei).
Την παρουσίαση διηύθυνε η μεταφραστρια Ελληνικής και Αγγλικής λογοτεχνίας Ewa T. Szyler.
Μετά την παρουσίαση, ο Ηλίας Βράζας (τραγούδι, κιθάρα) και ο Ισίδωρος Παπαδάκης (βιολοντσέλο, μπουζούκι) έπαιξαν τραγούδια σύγχρονων Ελλήνων συνθετών (Θεοδωράκης. Μαρκόπουλος…).
Η βραδιά «Ελληνικοί πειρασμοί» περιελάμβανε και τα εγκαίνια της έκθεσης σχεδίων του Μιχάλη Χρυσουλίδη, ζωγράφου και σκηνογράφου, το έργο του οποίου «Θάνατος» κοσμεί το βιβλίο του Ηλία Βράζα.
