Of Myth and Math: Logicomix

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)  The graphic novel “Logicomix” by Apostolos Doxiadis and Christos Papadimitriou is a best seller.

A praising review by the New York Times which followed Logicomix’s publishing in the United States rocketed the book’s sales and the visits to Doxiadis’ personal website. Doxiadis admits: “I personally, but also my publisher, did not expect such a development and just four days after the review was published.”  The book – an epic quest for certainty in science and logic according to Doxiadis – seems to have an appeal worldwide.  It made it to Amazon’s website top 6 selling books within one day, in the Netherlands it sold 12,000 copies in one month, and it is expected to be translated in 12 languages by the end of 2009.  Doxiadis is not unknown to the Anglophone public. His previous book “Uncle Petros and Goldbach’s Conjecture” sold 134,000 copies in the United Kingdom and was translated in 34 languages.  Logicomix is based on a particular motif: the history of mathematical logic and thus, the comic’s heroes are Bertrand Russel,  Ludwig Wittgenstein, Carl Friedrich Gauss, Alan Turing and Gottfried Leibniz.

Greece: Book Presentations

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   Denis Guedj :    Professor of History of Science at Paris VIII University Denis Guedj is known as a successful novelist of many books inspired by the ‘art’ of mathematics. His best seller “The Parrot’s Theorem” was translated in 20 languages and paved the way for the ‘mathematical fiction’ trend. His work enticed many others to follow his example in an equally original way. Greek writer Apostolos Doxiadis is one of the novelists who experimented on the narrative possibilities offered by mathematics. The Greek audience has the chance to meet Guedj who is in Athens for two lectures, one delivered yesterday at the Athens Concert Hall on ‘Science and Literature’ and another one at the French Institute of Thessaloniki today.    Continue reading
