(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) Greek-British journalist Iason Athanasiadis was released by Iran on Sunday, according to reports by the Agence France Presse and Reuters news agencies. Athanasiadis, who works for the Washington Times, had been arrested during disturbances following the recent presidential elections in the country. The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew had lodged a demarche with the Iranian government for the journalist’s release. He has both Greek and British citizenship. (GREEK NEWS AGENDA) Greek journalist Iason Athanasiadis was arrested few days ago by the Iranian authorities, while covering Iran’s disputed presidential election for the Washington Times. Greek FM spokesman confirmed the arrest and stated that the Foreign Ministry is in ongoing contact with the Iranian authorities in order to effect a positive outcome in the case. The journalist’ s parents have issued a public appeal for his release, thanking the Greek authorities for their efforts. Iason Athanasiadis is a journalist, photographer, writer and a television producer, specialised in Middle East, Central Asia and eastern Mediterranean issues.
