(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)  The percentage of Greek adolescents that had regular daily or weekly use of a computer reached 88.2% in the first quarter of 2008, while the percentage of children using the Internet totalled 71.7%, the National Statistics Service said on Monday. In a report on the use of information technology and communications by Greek households in 2008, the statistics service said the percentage of adolescents aged 12-15 years with access to the Internet totalled 84.9% in the first three months of 2008. The majority of the same age group that used either a computer or had access to the Internet, were based in their schools or their homes. Access rates from other areas, Internet cafes, public libraries, cultural and athletic clubs, reached 23.5% for computer use and 28.3% for Internet access. Decoding the Heavens by the Antikythera mechanism

Humanity’s need for purpose seems universal.  Regardless of our belief system, perhaps the beginning of winter is the best time to contemplate meaning and purpose.  How affirming and humbling to realize we are still so similar to others from the past.  The Antikythera mechanism (www.antikythera-mechanism.gr), calculated the motions of the sun, moon and planets and predicted eclipses using intricate gear mechanisms created over 2000 years ago.  Now scientists are reconstructing the device and finding that ancient Greek technology was far more advanced than previously thought.  “Historians have often scoffed at the Greeks for wasting their technology on toys rather than doing anything useful with it. If they had the steam engine, why not use it to do work?” But these devices may have been “a way to get closer to the true meaning of things. To what better use could technology be put?” The size of a shoebox, the Antikythera mechanism – a mysterious bronze device scooped out of a Roman-era shipwreck at the dawn of the 20^th century, off the island of Antikythera (www.antikythira.gr), has baffled scientists for years and proved to be a  calculator used by the Ancient Greeks more than 2,000 years ago. Europejska Nagroda dla Greckiej gry Komputerowej Zapobiegającej Narkotykom / Ευρωπαϊκό Βραβείο στο Ελληνικό Παιχνίδι για Η/Υ “Αντιστάσου”

W dniu 26 listopada w Warszawie została przyznana „III Europejska Nagroda Zapobiegania Narkotykom” Rady Europy, w ramach działalności „Grupy Pompidou”, która zajmuje się koordynacją działań 35 państw członkowskich grupy – wśród, których znajduje się również Grecja – w walce przeciwko nadużywaniu oraz nielegalnemu handlowi substancjami narkotykowymi.

Jednym z trzech programów nagrodzonych podczas uroczystości rozdania nagród był grecki program „Resist” („Staw Opór”), który stworzyli członkowie Centrum „Elpida” („Nadzieja”) z Salonik, centrum zapobiegania nadużywania substancji uzależniających.

Według jury konkursu, program „Resist” rozpowszechnia filozofię zapobiegania narkotykom i umacnia czynniki ochronne, by stworzyć pozytywne sposoby przeciwdziałania różnym rodzajom presji, jakim są poddawani młodzi ludzie w wieku od 12 do 19 lat oraz, by pomóc im powiedzieć „nie” dla zachowań i substancji, które prowadzą do pobudzenia i uzależnienia”.

Według jego twróców, program „Resist” jest grą komputerową, w trakcie której „gracz towarzyszy bohaterowi gry w domu, w kontaktach z rodzicami, w szkole, w relacjach z kolegami klasowymi, na ulicy oraz na imprezach wraz z jego przyjaciółmi. Gra jest wyzwaniem dla młodych ludzi i stwarza możliwość zobaczenia, jak można stawiać czoło różnym codziennym sytuacjom i przemyśleć możliwości reakcji oraz zobaczyć możliwe konsekwencje dokonanych wyborów.

Oprócz greckiego programu nagrodzone zostały również programy „Sweep the weed out of the gate” pochodzący z Warny (Bułgaria) oraz program «Battle of the West» z Leiden (Holandia)

Kryterium przynania nagrody europejskim programom przez jury, które rozpatrzyło 34 projekty uczestniczące z 15 państw europejskich, był ich inowacyjny charakter, udział w inicjatywie młodych ludzi oraz zastosowanie programu w praktyce . (ΑΚΟΛΟΥΘΕΙ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΚΕΙΜΕΝΟ)

Computer Seminars for Immigrants in Athens

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   An “Unlimited Potential” centre, which began operating in October in Athens, offers free certified computer literacy seminar series for up to 150 immigrants. The centre was set up by the City of Athens Centre for Employment and Entrepreneurship and Microsoft Hellas.  The programme aims to improve immigrants’ access to the job market. The Hellenic Professional Informatics Society has taken on the organisation of the programme, while Hellas ECDL is offering accreditation exams for free.
