Συνέντευξη προϊσταμένης Γραφείου Τύπου Μ. Μονδέλου στο πολωνικό ραδιόφωνο

Το πολωνικό κρατικό ραδιόφωνο Polskie Radio, στην εβδομαδιαία εκπομπή “Diplomatic Bag” (17/3/2011) που αναλύει από πολιτική άποψη την ευρωπαϊκή και διεθνή επικαιρότητα, μετέδωσε ρεπορτάζ με τίτλο «Η Ευρώπη φοβάται τους λαθρομετανάστες από την Βόρεια Αφρική».
Στο ρεπορτάζ εξετάζονται «οι τρόποι με τους οποίους τα κράτη του νότου της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, και ιδιαίτερα η Ιταλία και η Ελλάδα, αντιμετωπίζουν την εισροή παράνομων μεταναστών από την εξεγερμένη Βόρεια Αφρική» και ερευνάται «το ενδεχόμενο μετατροπής των αυξημένων μεταναστευτικών κυμάτων σε “Βιβλική έξοδο”».
Οι δημοσιογράφοι Monika Greszta και Alicja Baczynska επεσήμαναν ότι «έναν μήνα μετά την πολιτική αναταραχή στην Αίγυπτο, την Τυνησία, το Μαρόκο και την Λιβύη, η οποία ανέτρεψε ή υπονόμευσε τους δικτάτορες της Βόρειας Αφρικής, πολλοί στην Ευρώπη φοβούνται ότι η ήπειρος θα αντιμετωπίσει ένα γιγαντιαίο κύμα λαθρομετανάστευσης από την Βόρεια Αφρική».
Στην διάρκεια του ρεπορτάζ μεταδόθηκε συνέντευξη της προϊσταμένης του Γραφείου Τύπου, Μαρίας Μονδέλου, στην δημοσιογράφο Monika Greszta.
Στη συνέντευξη υπογραμμίστηκε αρχικά ότι “η Ελλάδα αναμένεται να πληγεί από ένα τεράστιο κύμα λαθρομεταναστών από την Λιβύη, την Τυνησία και το Μαρόκο, εξαιτίας της γεωγραφικής θέσης της στα εξωτερικά σύνορα της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης και της γειτονίας της με χώρες προέλευσης λαθρομεταναστών. Η Ελλάδα δέχεται τον μεγαλύτερο αριθμό λαθρομεταναστών σε σύγκριση με τις άλλες χώρες της Ευρώπης. Το 2010 περίπου 128.000 παράνομοι μετανάστες εισήλθαν στη χώρα και τους επόμενους μήνες αναμένονται ακόμη περισσότεροι”.
Αναφέρθηκαν, στη συνέχεια, ορισμένες από τις ελληνικές θέσεις για το πρόβλημα της λαθρομετανάστευσης, τονίζοντας, μεταξύ άλλων, ότι: “Θεωρούμε ότι η λαθρομετανάστευση δεν είναι μόνο ελληνικό πρόβλημα, αλλά ευρωπαϊκό και διεθνές, και επομένως τα μέτρα θα πρέπει να είναι ευρωπαϊκά. Γι`αυτούς τους λόγους, προσπαθούμε να πείσουμε τα κράτη μέλη να δείξουν αλληλεγγύη στην αντιμετώπιση του προβλήματος. Προτείνουμε, επίσης, την αναθεώρηση του Κανονισμού «Δουβλίνο ΙΙ» και την αναλογική κατανομή παράνομων μεταναστών μεταξύ των κρατών μελών, με βάση ορισμένα κριτήρια, όπως η οικονομική δυνατότητα και ο πληθυσμός κάθε κράτους μέλους.
Για την αντιμετώπιση της λαθρομετανάστευσης από την Βόρεια Αφρική, η Ελλάδα αύξησε τα μέτρα ελέγχου στα σύνορα της με την βοήθεια της ΕΕ. Ενισχύσαμε τους αστυνομικούς ελέγχους στα εσωτερικά μας σύνορα, ώστε να αποτρέπεται η μετακίνηση των παράνομων μεταναστών σε άλλα κράτη της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, και εντείναμε τους ελέγχους στα εξωτερικά σύνορα.
Συνεργαζόμαστε, επίσης, με την Ευρωπαϊκή Υπηρεσία Φύλαξης των Συνόρων (Frontex). Από τον Νοέμβριο που ξεκίνησε η παρουσία της Frontex στην Ελλάδα, σημειώθηκαν πολύ θετικά αποτελέσματα ως προς τον αριθμό των παράνομων μεταναστών: μείωση σε ποσοστό 37% τον Νοέμβριο και σε ποσοστό 57% τον Δεκέμβριο».

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) Liberation of Auschwitz Anniversary

“Auschwitz took the lives of many; Greek Jews were dispro­portio­na­tely numerous among them. Greeks of other faiths also paid a heavy price, often in defence of their Jewish brethren.

Many have been declared Righteous among the Nations and their names are engraved at the Holocaust Memorial of Yad Vashem,” Alternate Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas said in a statement, issued on January 27, on the 65^th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp.
This year also marks the tenth anniversary of the Stockholm Declaration which launched a fertile rethinking of the Holocaust in Europe and Greece is proud to be among the original signatories of this epochal document, said Droutsas.

“Greeks in Auschwitz-Birkenau” 

At a press conference at Greece’s Press and Communication Office in New York, on January 26, the head of the Foreign Ministry’s Diplomatic and Historical Archives, Fotini Tomai presented a series of evidence, documents and testimonies that reveal and highlight the extent of human tragedy as recorded in the book “Greeks in Auschwitz-Birkenau.”
This publication of the Foreign Ministry (in Greek and English) will be presented today at a special event at the Greek Consulate General in New York.

OSCE Ministerial Council in Athens

Papoulias Inaugurates OSCE Meeting

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias inaugurated yesterday the 17th Ministerial Council of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), taking place in Athens (1-2/12).
Papoulias welcomed delegates from the OSCE’ s 56 member states and described the international meeting as “an important political event and an opportunity to strengthen peaceful cooperation and promote the common goals of the member states, in order to reach tangible and substantive conclusions.”

Papandreou’ s Address

The Corfu Process needs to be taken a step further in order to meet the challenges to European security in the 21st century, OSCE chairman-in-office, Greece’s Prime minister and Foreign minister George Papandreou stressed, addressing the first plenary session of the organisation’s 17th ministerial council.
“We have to agree on important decisions in the next two days to strengthen co-operative security across the OSCE area, to shape the work of our organization, and to create a strong foundation for Kazakhstan to build upon as it assumes the OSCE Chairmanship on January 1,” Papandreou said.
He also expressed his hope that a constructive spirit will prevail during the two-day deliberations of the meeting.

Sideline Meetings

On the sidelines of the OSCE ministerial council, Papandreou met with the foreign ministers of Finland, Alexander Stubb and Kazakhstan, Kanat Saudabayev, who together form the current OSCE “troika.”
Alternate foreign minister Dimitris Droutsas had a meeting with FYROM’s FM Antonio Milososki while the premier is scheduled to meet today with the foreign ministers of Russia and Turkey, Sergei Lavrov and Ahmet Davutoglou respectively.
At the end of the first day of meetings, the Greek OSCE chairmanship hosted a formal reception for the visiting diplomatic delegations at the Acropolis Museum.

Farewell to Greek Journalist “Lambros”

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   On May 28, a distinguished member and veteran of the press corps family in the United States, Lambros Papantoniou, passed away in Washington, DC at age 63. During his 34-year career, Papantoniou was proud to say that he had been around for quite some time… “Every day for 38 years! From Nixon to Barack Obama!”,  he said in introducing himself at one State Department event. Papantoniou, known decades as “Mr. Lambros,” was the Washington diplomatic correspondent for the Greek daily newspaper Eleftheros Typos, Radio Thessaloniki, and the U.S.  He arrived in the US in 1973 and earned advanced degrees in international law and political science from the University of California at Berkeley. In 1975, he became active in journalism and ultimately he specialised in U.S. foreign policy relating to Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and the Balkans. Over the years, he wrote thousands of articles and became a leading voice on issues related to Southeast Europe.
