World Poetry Day – 2011 Elytis Year

Odysseas Elytis and his work will be the focus of this year’s World Poetry Day, which is celebrated each year on March 21.
The National Book Centre of Greece (EKEBI) launches a poetry campaign including several events.
One of the day’s highlights is an event jointly organized by EKEBI and the Hellenic Authors’ Society which brings together well-known poets and writers such as Katerina Anghelaki-Rooke, Vassilis Vasilikos, Kiki Dimoula and Evgenia Fakinou to recite poems by Odysseas Elytis.
Athenians and citizens of Thessaloniki, Mytillini, Rhodes and Zakynthos will have the opportunity to come across illustrated verses by Elytis as public transport means will feature some of the Nobel laureate’s most beloved and renowned poems. Poetry reading nights, with young poets will also be held in Athens and Thessaloniki.
Moreover in Athens, poet Nanos Valaoritis will present a new theory regarding Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey at the Hellenic American Union, while at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, World Poetry Day will be celebrated through poetry, music and stand-up poetry.
The year 2011 has been designated as an Elytis Year by Culture and Tourism Ministry, in order to mark the 100th anniversary since the birth of the Nobel laureate poet.

Thessaloniki Book Fair

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)     Thessaloniki, a European city at the crossroads of the Balkans and the Mediterranean, has been home to an international book fair since 2004.  Five years on, the fair has become a regular fixture for the book trade and booklovers.  The 6th edition of the Thessaloniki Book Fair takes place in May 28 to 31 at Helexpo exhibition centre. It offers visitors an opportunity to get acquainted with the latest releases of publishers from around the world.  History is the theme of the 2009 exhibition. Visitors will be able to look at an entire panorama of books related to history.  German publishing will be in the fair’s spotlight as this year, Germany is the guest of honour. 

Greece: Children’s Book Fair in Athens

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)  The National Book Centre (EKEBI) i hosted the 2nd Children’s and Young Adults Book Fair in Athens from January 23 to 26, in collaboration with publishers of children’s books and the Circle of the Greek Children’s Book. The fair aims to widen the horizons of children and attract new readers. The main theme this year was “Dreams and Nightmares,” and the guest of honour was the United Kingdom. A rich cultural programme includes shows, sessions with favourite writers and illustrators, theatrical and musical events, exhibitions, workshops and seminars.

Literary Meeting in Warsaw with Greek Writer Vassilis Vassilikos

On October 17, the Press and Communication Office in Warsaw – in collaboration with the French Institute in Warsaw and the National Book Centre of Greece (EKEBI) – organized a literary meeting with Greek writer Vassilis Vassilikos at the premises of the French Institute in Warsaw. Professor Jozef Kwaterko coordinated the meeting and read extracts from Mr. Vassilikos books, while the writer replied to audience questions. The conference followed a small reception, offering greek appetizers and wine and concluded with the screening of “Z”, Kostas Gavras legendary film, based on a Vassilis Vassilikos novel. The Greek Culture Agenda

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA )    – Gaia Festival is an independent world music festival, held in Thessaloniki. Since 1998, it has presented artists such as Nina Simon, Cesaria Evora, Savvina Giannatou, Massive Attack, Gotan Project and many others. This year, the festival presents “Οjos De Brujo Soundsystem” from Spain, “Caravan Palace” from France, “La Shica” from Spain, “Balkan Beat Box” from Israel, “Ζiveli Orkestar” from France and “17 Hippies” from Germany. Till April 12.
