Greece: Attracting Tourism Development

Greece ranked 29th among a total of 139 countries in a survey conducted by the World Economic Forum (WEF) regarding competitiveness for the tourism sector.
The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report is issued annually and grades countries on a total of 60 indicators, including policy regulations, resources, safety, prices and environmental protection. According to the survey, Greece benefits from its rich cultural resources (ranked 25th), excellent health and hygiene (20th), and a top-notch tourism infrastructure (5th). Further on, the report refers to the country’s strong national affinity for tourism (compared with many other European countries), including a generally open and positive attitude toward tourists (26th). The report ranks Greece 21st among European countries.

Ομιλία του πρωθυπουργού Γιώργου Παπανδρέου στην συνάντηση των προϊσταμένων Γραφείων Τύπου Εξωτερικού

Την Δευτέρα, 17 Ιανουαρίου 2011, πραγματοποιήθηκε στην αίθουσα Εκδηλώσεων (Κέντρου Τύπου) της Γενικής Γραμματείας Επικοινωνίας – Γενικής Γραμματείας Ενημέρωσης η συνάντηση των προϊσταμένων ΓΤΕ και Γραφείων ΕΟΤ, στις εργασίες της οποίας παρέστη ο Πρωθυπουργός, κ. Γιώργος Παπανδρέου. Η ομιλία του Πρωθυπουργού επικεντρώθηκε στην Ελλάδα που αλλάζει και στην ανάδειξη της κρίσης – και της αρνητικής για την χώρα μας δημοσιότητας που την συνόδεψε – ως μιας ευκαιρίας για την οικοδόμηση μιας νέας ταυτότητας που θα επιανατοποθετεί την Ελλάδα στον κόσμο. Προσδιόρισε επίσης τον ρόλο που θα έχουν τα Γραφεία Τύπου και Επικονωνίας στο πλαίσιο της σημερινής συγκυρίας.

PM George Papandreou: A Year of Consolidation and Reform

Greece’s image at this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos was “positive”, Prime Minister George Papandreou said on January 28, on the sidelines of the forum. As Papandreou said, there was across-the-board acknowledgement of Greece’s efforts and of the Greek people’s and government’s determination to carry on with the reforms.
Meanwhile, in an interview with the Austrian newspaper Die Presse, Papandreou reiterated that debt restructuring is not an option for Greece stressing the efforts to achieve an extension of the repayment period of the EU-IMF loans.

New OSCE PA President: Petros Efthymiou

Ruling PASOK party deputy Petros Efthymiou was elected as the new president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), during the forum’s 19th annual session.
Efthymiou, who was a Vice-President in the Assembly, was elected with 130 votes, against 64 of Senator Consiglio Di Nino (Canada).
Participants at the 19th session discussed a wide range of issues, amongst which the situation in Kyrgyzstan, the Parliamentary Assembly’s involvement in the Corfu process, the peace process in the Middle East, nuclear security, cyber-crime.

International Conference “Literature and Immigration” in Warsaw (25/3/2010)

An international conference “Literature and Immigration” took place in Warsaw on the 25^th March, under the auspices of the European Commission and EUNIC (EU National Institutes of Culture).
The conference was organized by Goethe Institut, Austrian Cultural Forum, Danish Institute, Romanian Cultural Institute, the Swedish Embassy and the Press Office of the Greek Embassy, all of them members of EUNIC, as well as by the Representation in Poland of the European Commission and the Centre of Modern Art Zamek Ujazdowski, where the conference took place.
Scholars involved in academic research related with the topics of literature and immigration were invited to share their views with writers that have chosen to write in a foreign language.

 Greece was represented by the Albanian writer and journalist, Gazmend Kapllani, who lives and works in Greece and the writer Theodor Kallifatides, who has lived the last 45 years in Sweden, publishing more than 40 books.
Both writers were invited by the Press Office, with the support of the Greek Book Centre. 

Kapllani spoke about “The strange language of dreams”: ”I think that writing in a language that is not your mother tongue is a privilege and a trap at the same time. It’s a trap because every time that you are not satisfied with what you are writing, you’re tempted to blame your failure on the “foreign” language. In a way, it becomes your scapegoat.

On the other hand, it’s a privilege, because the relationship between yourself and that language is a relationship of a never ending curiosity. You never take it for granted. This happens for the sole reason that it was never given to you, you had to “conquer” it. You are in a constant search for yourself and this language. The foreign language will never fully be yours in the same way your mother tongue is. I believe that the relationship one has with one’s mother tongue always contains an element of routine and heaviness. The relationship with the “foreign” language never becomes routine. It gives you a sense of lightness and freedom, a desire to play and conquer. The relationship with your mother tongue seems similar to the maternal affection. The relationship with a foreign language that you acquired resembles a love affair. At least, this is what I can say about my relationship with the Greek language. I feel that I am no longer a stranger to the Greek language. But I am not a native either. Therefore, I do not live inside the Greek language either as a stranger, or as a native. Maybe I live within it as a strange one”. 
Kallifatides, who has published novels, poetry collections, travel essays and plays, has received numerous awards for his works which usually revolve around his experience of Greece and of being Greek in foreign domains and almost all his works have been translated and published in more than twenty languages.
During the conference, he stressed that for him the Greek language is the language of connotations and feelings, and the Swedish language is an intellectual language. He mentioned the problems of writing in your own language and the privileges of writing in a foreign language. He considers himself an immigrant and a writer and not an immigrant writer.

PM George Papandreou at the World Economic Forum

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) Speaking as part of a panel – that also included Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero and European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet – at the annual World Economic Forum taking place in Davos, Switzerland (January 27 -31), Prime Minister George Papandreou said that Greece would not leave the euro area and would use the discipline of membership to slash its budget deficit and make long-delayed structural economic reforms. “The answer is very simple. We went [to the market] for borrowing two days ago and we were five times oversubscribed. We’re not looking for money from anywhere else…” said Papandreou. He outlined an ambitious goal to reduce the deficit by four points this year and bring it below 3% by 2012, through measures taken as part of Greece’s Stability and Growth Programme (SGP).  The premier held a meeting with EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia yesterday, and the discussion focused on Greece’s SGP in light of the report that the European Commission will be submitting on February 3, on Greece.  European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso – speaking in Brussels on Thursday – stressed the need for the greater coordination of economic policies in the EU, emphasising that economic policies are not only a national issue, but European as well. OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) Alternate Defence Minister Panos Beglitis will inaugurate the OSCE’s Forum for Security Co-operation with an address at the Organisation’s headquarters in Vienna today.
Greece assumes the rotating chairmanship for the first four months of 2010.
The Forum constitutes the OSCE’s autonomous political and military body, and deals with issues of the so-called “tough security”, with its own Presidency, that alternates in alphabetical order every four months, as well with its own “Troika,” which functions in a coordinating manner.

Black Sea Business Forum / Thessaloniki, 12 & 13 November 2009

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) The Burgas-Alexandroupolis pipeline is a significant project with geopolitical, economic and energy importance, Deputy Foreign Minister Spyros Kouvelis noted, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a Black Sea Business Forum in Thessaloniki, on November 12. 
The 3rd Union of Black Sea and Caspian Confederation of Enterprises (UBCCE) business forum, entitled “Seizing New Investment and Trade Opportunities in the Black Sea and Caspian in the Post Crisis Era,” is being held in Thessaloniki on November 12-13.

It is hosted by the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises and the Federation of Industries of Northern Greece.
Addressing the event, Kouvelis stressed Greece’s commitment to the enhancement of co-operation with the European Union, through the establishment of “Black Sea Partnerships” within the “Black Sea Synergy” process, as well as through the new “Eastern Partnership” EU initiative.
Greece, he said, will have the chance to advance this perspective during the Greek Chairmanship of the Organization of Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), which commences on June 1, 2010.

STRESZCZENIE
«Powieści, dzięki którym Nikos Kazantzakis (1883-1957) zdobył międzynarodową sławę i uznanie, zaczął pisać po sześćdziesiątym roku życia (!). Uważał je za parerga, a ich tworzenie za rozrywkę w pascalowskim sensie. I nie był gołosłowny, bowiem pisaną pod koniec życia “autobiografię duchową” pt. Αναφορά στον Γκρέκο (Raport dla El Greco) doprowadził do momentu powstania quasi-filozoficznego dzieła pt. Ασκητική (Ascetyka) i eposu Οδύσσεια (Odyseja), pomijając cały ostatni okres życia, podczas którego powstały powieści. Prezentowana książka skonstruowana jest wokół niewielkiej rozmiarami Ascetyki. Uznałem, że spojrzenie na sylwetkę twórczą Kazantzakisa poprzez pryzmat tego właśnie dzieła jest poznawczo obiecujące, albowiem zawarte jest w nim światopoglądowe i tożsamościowe credo pisarza, które następnie z podziwu godną konsekwencją będzie on eksploatować we wszystkich swoich dziełach. Lektura Ascetyki narzuca nieodparte przekonanie, że jest ona swego rodzaju egzystencjalnym projektem o charakterze apelatywnym, propozycją nowej formuły duchowości po fundamentalnym dla historii Zachodu doświadczeniu związanym z tzw. „śmiercią Boga” i „odczarowaniem świata”. Nawołuje ona niejako do odrodzenia, do odbudowania sfery duchowej, która po „śmierci Boga” stała się wysoce problematyczna, a nawet śmiertelnie zagrożona».

ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
«Τα μυθιστορήματα, χάρη στα οποία ο Νίκος Καζαντζάκης (1883–1957) κέρδισε τη διεθνή φήμη και αναγνώριση, άρχισε να τα γράφει μετά τα εξήντα του χρόνια (!). Τα θεωρούσε ως πάρεργα και τη δημιουργία τους ως διασκέδαση με την πασκαλινή έννοια. Δεν ήταν αυτό απ’ τη μεριά του συγγραφέα μια δήλωση χωρίς αντίκρισμα, αφού τη γραμμένη προς το τέλος της ζωής του «πνευματική αυτοβιογραφία» Αναφορά στον Γκρέκο την έφτασε ως τη στιγμή που τελειοποίησε το quasi-φιλοσοφικό του έργο Ασκητική και το έπος Οδύσσεια, αποσιωπώντας όλη την τελευταία περίοδο της ζωής του, στη διάρκεια της οποίας είδαν το φως τα μυθιστορήματά του. Το βιβλίο που παρουσιάζω είναι κατασκευασμένο γύρω από την μικρού μεγέθους Ασκητική. Θεώρησα, ότι αντικρίζοντας την καλλιτεχνική προσωπικότητα του Καζαντζάκη υπό το πρίσμα αυτού ακριβώς του έργου είναι γνωστικά ελπιδοφόρο, διότι παρέχει μέσα του το κοσμοθεωρητικό και ταυτοτικό credo του συγγραφέα, που κατόπιν με αξιοθαύμαστη συνέπεια θα το εκμεταλλευτεί σ’ όλα του τα έργα. Η ανάγνωση της Ασκητικής επιβάλλει μια αδιαφιλονίκητη πεποίθηση, ότι είναι ένα είδος υπαρξιακού προτάγματος με έντονα επικλητικό χαρακτήρα, πρόταση μιας νέας φόρμουλας πνευματικότητας μετά από την κεφαλαιώδη για την ιστορία της Δύσης εμπειρία του «θανάτου του Θεού» και της «απομάγευσης του κόσμου». Μας καλεί κατά κάποιο τρόπο προς μια αναγέννηση, προς την ανοικοδόμηση της πνευματικής μας διάστασης, η οποία μετά το «θάνατο  του Θεού» έγινε σε υψηλό βαθμό προβληματική και βρέθηκε ακόμα και σε θανάσιμο κίνδυνο».

ILIAS WRAZAS studiował kulturoznawstwo i filozofię na Uniwersytecie Wrocławskim. Doktoryzował się z filozofii i socjologii. Współpracuje z czasopismami „Notatnik Teatralny” i „Nowa Krytyka”. Przez wiele lat wykładał filozofię. Od kilku lat jego zainteresowania skupione są na kulturze i literaturze nowogreckiej. Ich owocem jest książka Zbawca Boga. Kuszenia Nikosa Kazantzakisa. Obecnie przygotowuje książkę o kulturze nowogreckiej. Pracuje w Instytucie Studiów Klasycznych, Śródziemnomorskich i Orientalnych Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego, gdzie wykłada historię kultury i literatury nowogreckiej.

O ΗΛΙΑΣ ΒΡΑΖΑΣ σπούδασε φιλοσοφία και πολιτισμό στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Wrocław. Εκπόνησε τη διδακτορική του διατριβή στην φιλοσοφία και κοινωνιολογία. Συνεργάζεται με τα περιοδικά „Notatnik Teatralny” και „Nowa Krytyka”.  Δίδαξε φιλοσοφία. Εδώ και μερικά χρόνια το ενδιαφέρον του εστιάζεται στον πολιτισμό και τη λογοτεχνία της νεώτερης Ελλάδας. Καρπός των ενδιαφερόντων του είναι το βιβλίο «Ο σωτήρας του Θεού, Οι πειρασμοί του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη». Ετοιμάζει επίσης βιβλίο για τον νεοελληνικό πολιτισμό. Εργάζεται στο Ινστιτούτο Κλασικών, Μεσογειακών και Ανατολικών Σπουδών του Πανεπιστήμιου του Wrocław, όπου διδάσκει ιστορία του πολιτισμού και της λογοτεχνίας της νεότερης Ελλάδας. 

NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS (1883-1957) jest najbardziej – obok Konstandinosa Kawafisa – znanym na świecie twórcą greckim. Jest autorem takich powieści jak „Grek Zorba” czy „Ostatnie kuszenie Chrystusa”, które doczekały się udanych filmowych adaptacji. „Ostatnie kuszenie Chrystusa” wpisane zostało do listy 100 najczęściej cenzurowanych arcydzieł literatury światowej. Film Martina Scorsese z 1988 roku na podstawie powieści Kazantzakisa, wywołał oburzenie Kościołów na całym świecie. W Polsce film nie był nigdy rozpowszechniany w kinach. Nie dopuścił do tego Episkopat w porozumieniu z Biurem Politycznym KC PZPR.  Choć sam Kazantzakis nigdy nie pisał z intencją wywołania skandalu, to jego oryginalne i nowatorskie propozycje współczesnej duchowości, wywoływały ostre reakcje instytucji monopolizujących rozumienie duchowości człowieka. Książka Iliasa Wrazasa pt. „Znawca Boga. Kuszenia Nikosa Kazantzakisa” przedstawia znane i mniej znane aspekty twórczości greckiego pisarza.

O ΝΙΚΟΣ ΚΑΖΑΝΤΖΑΚΗΣ (1883-1957) συγκαταλέγεται –μαζί με τον Κωνσταντίνο Καβάφη- στους πιο γνωστούς Έλληνες δημιουργούς στον κόσμο.  Είναι συγγραφέας του «Ζορμπά», καθώς και του «Τελευταίου Πειρασμού», έργα που μεταφέρθηκαν και στην κινηματογραφική οθόνη.  Ο «Τελευταίος Πειρασμός» περιλαμβάνεται στον κατάλογο με τα 100 αριστουργήματα της παγκόσμιας λογοτεχνίας που έχουν λογοκριθεί. Η ομότιτλη ταινία του Martin Scorsese το 1988, προκάλεσε την οργή της Εκκλησίας διεθνώς. Στην Πολωνία δεν παίχθηκε στον κινηματογράφο. Απαγορεύτηκε η προβολή  της από το Επισκοπάτο σε συμφωνία με το Πολιτικό Γραφείο της Κεντρικής Επιτροπής του Ενωμένου Πολωνικού Εργατικού Κόμματος.  Ωστόσο ο Καζαντζάκης δεν έγραψε ποτέ με στόχο την πρόκληση σκανδάλου, είναι η ίδια η κοσμοθεωρία  του που προκάλεσε την αντίδραση των θεσμών που θεωρούσαν ότι μονοπωλούν την πνευματικότητα.  Το βιβλίο του Ηλία Βράζα «Ο Σωτήρας του Θεού. Οι Πειρασμοί του Καζαντζάκη» παρουσιάζει τις γνωστές και λιγότερο γνωστές πτυχές του έργου του Έλληνα συγγραφέα.

MICHAŁ HRISULIDIS jest absolwentem PWSSP we Wrocławiu, ma za sobą 40 wystaw indywidualnych w Polsce i na świecie. Brał udział w wielu wystawach zbiorowych. Od 1993 roku zajmuje się również scenografią filmową i teatralną. W 1994 roku otrzymał nagrodę indywidualną na XIX Festiwalu Polskich Filmów Fabularnych w Gdyni za współtworzenie kształtu plastycznego filmu pt. „Cudowne miejsce” w reż. Jana Jakuba Kolskiego, a w 2000 roku nagrodę indywidualną za scenografię do filmu „ Daleko od okna „ w reż. Jana Jakuba Kolskiego na XXV Festiwalu Polskich Filmów Fabularnych w Gdyni. Jest autorem około trzydziestu realizacji scenograficznych do filmów fabularnych i teatrów telewizji (m.in. do Filmów Jana Jakuba Kolskiego, Filipa Bajona i Radosława Piwowarskiego). Prace Michała Hrisulidisa znajdują się w Muzeum Kinematografii w Łodzi, w Muzeum Archeologiczno-Historycznym w Głogowie, w Galerii Miejskiej w Lubinie, a także w wielu zbiorach prywatnych w Polsce i za granicą. Jest autorem okładki i ilustracji do książki Iliasa Wrazasa Zbawca Boga. Kuszenia Nikosa Kazantzakisa.

O MΙΧΑΛΗΣ ΧΡΥΣΟΥΛΙΔΗΣ είναι απόφοιτος της PWSSP (Ανώτατη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών) του Wrocław. Έχει συμμετάσχει σε 40 ατομικές εκθέσεις στην Πολωνία και το εξωτερικό και έχει λάβει μέρος σε πολλές συλλογικές εκθέσεις. Από το 1993 ασχολείται με την κινηματογραφική και θεατρική σκηνογραφία. Το 1994 του απενεμήθη βραβείο στο 19^ο Φεστιβάλ Πολωνικών Ταινιών στη Gdynia για την σκηνογραφία της ταινίας „Cudowne miejsce” («Θαυμάσιο μέρος») σε σκηνοθεσία του Jan Jakub Kolski, ενώ το 2000 βραβεύθηκε για την σκηνογραφία του έργου «Daleko od okna» («Μακριά από το Παράθυρο») σε σκηνοθεσία του Jan Jakub Kolski στο 25^ο Φεστιβάλ Πολωνικών Ταινιών στη Gdynia. Έχει κάνει τα σκηνικά σε τριάντα περίπου ταινίες και θεατρικές μεταφορές στην τηλεόραση (μεταξύ άλλων σε έργα του Jan Jakub Kolski, του Filip Bajon και Radosław Piwowarski).  Τα έργα του Μιχάλη Χρυσουλίδη βρίσκονται στο Μουσείο της Κινηματογραφικής Τέχνης της πόλης Łódz, στο Αρχαιολογικο- Ιστορικό Μουσείο του Głogow, τη Δημοτική Γκαλερί του Lubin και σε πολλές ιδιωτικές συλλογές στην Πολωνία και το εξωτερικό.  Σχεδίασε το εξώφυλλο στο βιβλίο του Ηλία Βράζα «Ο Σωτήρας του Θεού. Οι Πειρασμοί του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη»

 

ISIDOROS PAPADAKIS jest absolwentem Kompozycji i Teorii Muzyki Uniwersytetu Arystotelesa oraz Państwowej Wyższej Szkoły Muzycznej w Salonikach. Obecnie jest doktorantem na Wydziale Kompozycji Akademii Muzycznej w Krakowie u Profesora Wojciecha Widłaka. Jest autorem muzyki kameralnej i utworów wokalnych. Pod kierunkiem prof. Kiriakosa Gouventasa i Evgeniosa Voulgarisa studiował również anatolijską muzykę grecką i turecką. Gra na kilku instrumentach.

O ΙΣΙΔΩΡΟΣ ΠΑΠΑΔΑΚΗΣ είναι απόφοιτος Μουσικής Σύνθεσης και Θεωρίας της Ανώτατης Μουσικής Σχολής στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Είναι υποψήφιος διδάκτορας στο Τμήμα Σύνθεσης της Μουσικής Ακαδημίας στην Κρακοβία υπό την επίβλεψη του καθηγητή Wojciech Widłak.  Δημιουργός μουσικής δωματίου και φωνητικών έργων.  Υπό την επίβλεψη του καθηγητή Κυριάκου Γουβεντά και του Ευγένιου Βούλγαρη έχει σπουδάσει ελληνική και τουρκική μουσική. Παίζει μουσικά όργανα.

“Dialogue of Civilizations” Concludes

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   The 7th Annual Session of the World Public Forum “Dialogue of Civilizations” concluded on the Dodecanese island of Rhodes yesterday (October 13) with the adoption of the “2009 Rhodes Declaration.”  The event was attended by 500 delegates from 70 countries and among the messages read out was one by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who praised the positive impact of the annual forum on several international and regional mechanisms and in developing relations between civil societies in many countries.  In its final meeting, the Forum decided to hold its 8th annual session on Rhodes once more, on October 7-10, 2010.

On Wednesday May 27, composer and pianist Giorgos Kissas and his wife Dagny Baczynska-Kissas, also a pianist, performed pieces of Nikos Skalkotas, Giannis Papaioannou, Dimitris Mitropoulos, and Kissas own compositions, to the Greek-Polish audience at the Austrian Cultural Institute in Warsaw. Dagny Baczynska-Kissas graduated from the Frederic Chopin Music Academy, in Warsaw. Giorgos Kissas studied music in Greece and Poland.  The concert entitled “20th Century Greek Classical Music” was jointly organized by the Austrian Cultural Institute and the Press and Communication Office of Greece in Warsaw. The event concluded with a wine reception in the honor of the musicians.

27 MAJA 2009 Kompozytor i pianista Georgios Kissas wraz z małżonką, również pianistką Dagny Baczyńską – Kissas zaprezentowali w dniu 27 maja w sali Austriackiego Forum Kultury w Warszawie dzieła greckich kompozytorów Nikos’a Skalkotas’a, Yiannis’a Papaioannou, Dimitris’a Mitropoulou oraz kompozycje własne Georgios’a Kissas’a.  Dagny Baczyńska-Kissas  jest absolwentką Akademii Muzycznej im. F.Chopina w Warszawie, natomiast Georgios Kissas studiował muzykę klasyczną w Grecji oraz w Polsce.  Koncert „Grecka muzyka klasyczna XX wieku” został zorganizowany przez Austriackie Forum Kultury przy współpracy Biura Prasowego i Komunikacji Ambasady Grecji.  Po zakończeniu imprezy miał miejsce poczęstunek greckim i austriackim winem.

27 ΜΑΪΟΥ 2009 Ο συνθέτης και πιανίστας Γιώργος Κίσσας μαζί με την πιανίστρια σύζυγό του Dagny Baczyńska-Kissas παρουσίασαν στις 27 Μαίου στους χώρους του Αυστριακού Ινστιτούτου Πολιτισμού στη Βαρσοβία έργα των Νίκου Σκαλκώτα, Γιάννη Παπαϊωάννου, Δημήτρη Μητρόπουλου, αλλά και συνθέσεις του ίδιου του Γιώργου Κίσσα.  Η Dagny Baczyńska-Kissas είναι απόφοιτος της Μουσικής Ακαδημίας Φρειδερίκος Σοπέν της Βαρσοβίας, ενώ ο Γιώργος Κίσσας έχει σπουδάσει κλασική μουσική στην Ελλάδα και στην Πολωνία.  Η συναυλία «Ελληνική κλασική μουσική του 20^ου αιώνα» οργανώθηκε από το Αυστριακό Ινστιτούτο Πολιτισμού σε συνεργασία με το Γραφείο Τύπου και Επικοινωνίας Βαρσοβίας. Μετά το τέλος της εκδήλωσης προσφέρθηκε ελληνικό και αυστριακό κρασί στους παρισταμένους.

Greek FM Dora Bakoyannis at OSCE Forum

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   Foreign Minister and Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Chairperson in Office Dora Bakoyannis addressed the opening session of the 17th OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum:  “Management of migration and its correlation and its linkages with economic, social and environmental policies to the benefit of stability and security in the OSCE region,” which began yesterday.  In her keynote address, Bakoyannis underlined the need to adopt medium- and long-term policies aimed at dealing with the problems stemming from illegal migration on a global scale, and urged OSCE states to further increase co-operation on migration issues and develop comprehensive and effective policy frameworks.  “We have all witnessed the increasing trends of migration as an effect of globalisation. The recent developments of the financial and economic crisis complicate the problem and its multifaceted character calls for a more focused and co-ordinated approach by the international community,” she said.  The three-day meeting focuses on the development impact of migration and gender-sensitive approaches in migration related policy-making. Greece: Public Diplomacy in the Information Age

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)                The International Communication Policy Forum (www.icp-forum.gr / www.publicdiplomacy.gr) is organising the “International Relations and Public Diplomacy” conference which will take place on January 16 on the premises of the Secretariat General for Information. Eytan Gilboa, professor of International Communication at Bar-Ilan University, Israel and visiting professor at the Center for Public Diplomacy at the University of Southern California, will be the key-note speaker, addressing the topic “Public Diplomacy in the Information Age“.

Athens to Host Global Forum on Migration, 2009

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   Next year, Athens will host the 3^rd Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), and the Alexander Onassis Public Benefit Foundation will undertake the organisation of the event – which will take place in November 2009. The GFMD is a voluntary, cross-border initiative launched by the UN secretary general’s office and aims to display the potential and challenges of international migration. Greece – Turkey: Power Swap Deal

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) Greece‘s Development Minister Christos Folias signed a power swap deal with his Turkish counterpart in Istanbul on July 2, in a bid to solve the anticipated rise in power consumption.  In his speech at the 5th International Energy Forum, which was held in Istanbul, Folias stressed that regional energy cooperation and development is a matter of pivotal strategic importance to both Greece and Turkey. “It is our conviction that the nations making up the geopolitical triangle, Eastern Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, will enjoy a constantly mounting role in the world balance of energy market in the near future,” Folias said.
