“Greece is Changing” campaign

Greece is Changing, is a campaign launched through international media, in four languages, English, French, German and Dutch, aiming to bring to the attention of a wider international audience, through a series of graphs and compact information, the changes initiated in Greece in the last two years.
It is a one-off public service initiative funded by a group of leading Greek business people, whose aim is to ensure that the sacrifices made by every Greek under the toughest austerity package in modern history, are not in vain.

Διάλεξη προϊσταμένης Γραφείου Τύπου Μαρίας Μονδέλου για την βενετοκρατούμενη Κρήτη (Πανεπιστήμιο Βαρσοβίας, 29/3/2011)

Διάλεξη με θέμα «Η περίοδος της βενετοκρατίας στην Κρήτη» έδωσε η προϊσταμένη του Γραφείου Τύπου, Μαρία Μονδέλου, στις 29 Μαρτίου στο Πανεπιστήμιο Βαρσοβίας.
Πραγματοποιήθηκε ύστερα από πρόσκληση του Ινστιτούτου Διεπιστημονικών Σπουδών (Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies) “Artes Liberales” του Πανεπιστημίου της Βαρσοβίας, με πρωτοβουλία της καθηγήτριας Malgorzata Borowska, διευθύντριας του Τμήματος Νεοελληνικής Φιλολογίας, και αποτελεί συνέχεια διαλέξεων που δόθηκαν το 2009 και το 2010.
Η διάλεξη απευθυνόταν στους φοιτητές του Β΄ έτους της Νεοελληνικής Φιλολογίας, στο πλαίσιο του μαθήματος «Κρητικά αριστουργήματα της περιόδου της Αναγέννησης».
Στο πρώτο μέρος παρουσιάστηκαν τα σημαντικότερα ορόσημα της βενετικής ιστορίας και των μακραίωνων ελληνο-βενετικών σχέσεων, με έμφαση στις σχέσεις Βενετίας και Βυζαντίου. Έγινε αναφορά σε όψεις της ιστορίας της Βενετοκρατίας στον ελληνικό χώρο και στα χαρακτηριστικά της βενετικής κυριαρχίας και επισημάνθηκαν ορισμένα από τα συμπεράσματα των σύγχρονων ερευνών, οι οποίες αποδεικνύουν την ύπαρξη ενός κοινού ελληνο-βενετικού πολιτισμού, καρπού της δυτικής και της βυζαντινής παράδοσης.
Αναλύθηκαν τα κύρια γνωρίσματα της ιστορίας μίας από τις σημαντικότερες βενετικές κτήσεις, της Κρήτης, καθώς και τα χαρακτηριστικά των τεσσάρων μεγαλύτερων πόλεων  (Χάνδακας, Χανιά, Ρέθυμνο, Σητεία). Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά έγινε στη λεγόμενη «Κρητική Αναγέννηση» και σε επιτεύγματα του βενετο-κρητικού πολιτισμού της ύστερης περιόδου (με ενδεικτικά παραδείγματα  από την λογοτεχνία, την ποίηση, την ζωγραφική).
Στη συνέχεια, παρουσιάστηκαν συνοπτικά τα κυριότερα χαρακτηριστικά της βενετικής κυριαρχίας στη Σητεία (πόλη και ύπαιθρος), κυρίως κατά την ύστερη περίοδο της Βενετοκρατίας (16^ος και 17^ος αι.), οι θεσμοί που εισήγαγε η Βενετία στην πόλη, η κοινωνική διαστρωμάτωση της πόλης και της υπαίθρου, οι κοινωνικές σχέσεις, τα χαρακτηριστικά της οικονομίας, η μορφή της πόλης και ο τρόπος ζωής των κατοίκων. Ειδική μνεία έγινε σε ιστορικά στοιχεία για τον καταγόμενο από την Σητεία Βιτσέντζο Κορνάρο, ποιητή του Ερωτόκριτου, έργο το οποίο αποτελεί αντικείμενο σπουδών των φοιτητών του Β΄ έτους.
Τέλος, παρουσιάστηκαν στους φοιτητές αντίγραφα ανέκδοτων χειρογράφων της εποχής και αναγνώστηκε τμήμα του περιεχομένου τους.

Eminent Greek Authors Digitised

Tributes in the form of cultural events and publications prepared over the last few years by the National Book Centre to commemorate birth or death anniversaries of eminent Greek writers now take a permanent place in the Centre’s digital archive.

Authors such as Stratis Tsirkas and M. Karagatsis, as well as poets like Nikos Kavvadias have their own website in the progressively increasing Book Centre’s electronic archive of Modern Greek literature. The latest addition bears the name of poet Yiannis Ritsos, whose 100-year birth anniversary was observed in 2009.

Karaghiozis: “Inextricable part of Greek Culture”

Greece is planning to press its claims to Karaghiozis, a shadow puppet theatre character that UNESCO has deemed to be part of Turkey’s cultural heritage.
“Karaghiozis is an extricable part of our culture,” Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson said, adding that UNESCO allows neighbouring countries to access the same commodity when it comes to intangible cultural heritage.
The issue has prompted an announcement by the Ministry of Culture, according to which, “it is commonly known and undoubted that shadow theatre refers to a cultural tradition which surpasses boundaries and spans through the Balkans, and the broader East, long time before the emergence of contemporary states.

Concerning the Greek version of Karaghiozis, it represents a vivid chapter of Modern Greek culture, which defends traditional values broadly cherished by the Greek people.”

Athens & Epidaurus Festival 2010

It seems that ages have gone by since Maria Callas stunned the audience by performing ‘Norma’ at the Epidaurus theatre as part of events celebrating the Greek festival in 1960. The 2010 Greek Festival, which opens today, encompasses a variety of artistic expressions.  

Its aim is to present contemporary artists from around the globe and acquaint the world public with both innovative and pervasive trends of modern artistic creations. 
The festival spans from June to mid –August with old and new venues hosting the events, such as the Herodus Attikus theatre, the Benaki Museum, and the Building H at the Peiraios 260 complex.
This year music lovers will have the opportunity to enjoy Rufus Wainwright in a one-man-show on June 5 at the Lycabettus Hill Theatre.
In the first half, he will present his newly- released album, while in the second, he will play major hits from his entire career.

Festival of Greek Culture in Tarnowskie Gory (Silesia) 11-28 May 2010

A festival of Greek Culture is taking place in Tarnowskie Gory of Silesia region (southern Poland) from the 11th till the 28th May. The 13th edition of the festival, organized by the Cultural Centre of Tarnowskie Gory, is under the auspices of the Greek Embassy in Warsaw and has been realised with the cooperation of the Press Office.
Various aspects of Greek culture are promoted during the festival, which includes a rich programme of events of high quality, such as lectures, music, cinema, theatre, performances, concerts, dance, discussion-panels, painting, cuisine. Many Greeks that live in Poland and work successfully in various fields (artistic, scientific or economic), participate in this festival, presenting the results of their efforts.
At the official opening of the festival on the 14th May, a message by the Greek Ambassador, Gabriel Coptsidis, who praised the great interest of cultural institutions towards Greece and the high level of their knowledge about Greek history and culture, was read. The Press Attache, Maria Mondelou, has hold a speech, stressing the importance of cultural events dedicated to Greece that are successfully organised in Poland.

Tarnogórskie Makaty, w tym roku poświęcone będą w całości Grecji, a zwłaszcza spuściźnie kulturowej starożytnej Grecji, jak i dorobkowi w tej sferze współczesnego państwa greckiego. Imprezy w ramach XIII Tarnogórskich Makat odbędą się w dniach od 11 do 28 maja. Poprzednie edycje festiwalu poświęcone były m.in. kulturze: Japonii, Litwy, Czech, Węgier i Izraela. Głównym celem wydarzenia jest przybliżenie mieszkańcom naszego miasta i nie tylko, dziedzictwa innych kultur.
Tegoroczny program imprezy zapowiada się bardzo ciekawie. Serdecznie zapraszamy do udziału.

Lecture of the writer Theodor Kallifatides at the University of Warsaw (26/3/2010)

The writer Theodor Kallifatides, visiting Warsaw in order to participate at the Conference “Literature and Immigration”, hold a lecture at the University of Warsaw on the 26^th March.
The lecture was attended by the students of Modern Greek Philology at the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies “Artes Liberales”.
The Greek writer spoke about his life and his decision to immigrate in Sweden, where he lives for the last 45 years. He referred, also, to the subjects that have inspired some of his 40 books and had a discussion with the students who were eager to learn about his new books.
The lecture was proposed by the Press Office of the Greek Embassy in Warsaw, which invited Kallifatides in Poland. The writer had, also, the chance to meet the Greek Ambassador, Gabriel Koptsidis.  

International Conference “Literature and Immigration” in Warsaw (25/3/2010)

An international conference “Literature and Immigration” took place in Warsaw on the 25^th March, under the auspices of the European Commission and EUNIC (EU National Institutes of Culture).
The conference was organized by Goethe Institut, Austrian Cultural Forum, Danish Institute, Romanian Cultural Institute, the Swedish Embassy and the Press Office of the Greek Embassy, all of them members of EUNIC, as well as by the Representation in Poland of the European Commission and the Centre of Modern Art Zamek Ujazdowski, where the conference took place.
Scholars involved in academic research related with the topics of literature and immigration were invited to share their views with writers that have chosen to write in a foreign language.
  

The writer Kallifatides

 Greece was represented by the Albanian writer and journalist, Gazmend Kapllani, who lives and works in Greece and the writer Theodor Kallifatides, who has lived the last 45 years in Sweden, publishing more than 40 books.
Both writers were invited by the Press Office, with the support of the Greek Book Centre. 

Kapllani spoke about “The strange language of dreams”: ”I think that writing in a language that is not your mother tongue is a privilege and a trap at the same time. It’s a trap because every time that you are not satisfied with what you are writing, you’re tempted to blame your failure on the “foreign” language. In a way, it becomes your scapegoat.

On the other hand, it’s a privilege, because the relationship between yourself and that language is a relationship of a never ending curiosity. You never take it for granted. This happens for the sole reason that it was never given to you, you had to “conquer” it. You are in a constant search for yourself and this language. The foreign language will never fully be yours in the same way your mother tongue is. I believe that the relationship one has with one’s mother tongue always contains an element of routine and heaviness. The relationship with the “foreign” language never becomes routine. It gives you a sense of lightness and freedom, a desire to play and conquer. The relationship with your mother tongue seems similar to the maternal affection. The relationship with a foreign language that you acquired resembles a love affair. At least, this is what I can say about my relationship with the Greek language. I feel that I am no longer a stranger to the Greek language. But I am not a native either. Therefore, I do not live inside the Greek language either as a stranger, or as a native. Maybe I live within it as a strange one”. 
Kallifatides, who has published novels, poetry collections, travel essays and plays, has received numerous awards for his works which usually revolve around his experience of Greece and of being Greek in foreign domains and almost all his works have been translated and published in more than twenty languages.
During the conference, he stressed that for him the Greek language is the language of connotations and feelings, and the Swedish language is an intellectual language. He mentioned the problems of writing in your own language and the privileges of writing in a foreign language. He considers himself an immigrant and a writer and not an immigrant writer.

Greece`s presentation by the Greek Embassy and the Press Office at the European Information Centre in Warsaw (19/3/2010)

A presentation of Greece by the Greek Embassy and the Press Office in Warsaw took place at the European Information Centre of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 19^th March 2010 (www.cie.gov.pl).
Various aspects of Greece were presented by the Deputy Head of Mission, Paraskevi Charitidou, and the Press Attache, Maria Mondelou.
The audience, 70  students of higher secondary schools of Warsaw, was informed about Greece`s geostrategic position, its political system, the participation in international organizations, such as the EU and the NATO, the Greek Presidencies in the EU.
A brief presentation of the Greek history, mainly during the modern and contemporary period, was followed by characteristic examples of Greek culture, in the fields of literature, poetry, music, theatre and cinema.
Views of the New Acropolis Museum were presented, as well as Greece`s request for the restitution of the Parthenon Marbles.
During the discussion, the students were informed about Greece`s foreign policy, the situation of the Greek economy, tourism, the educational system and the scholarships offered for foreign students. They were, also, particularly interested about the image of Poles in Greece and their life.
 The European Information Centre, that invited the Greek Embassy to make the presentation of Greece, organizes annually discussions with representatives of the EU member states.

Spotkanie z przedstawicielkami Ambasady Grecji

 19 marca 2010 r. w Centrum Informacji Europejskiej MSZ odbyło się spotkanie uczniów XL Liceum Ogólnokształcącego im. S. Żeromskiego oraz LXXV Liceum Ogólnokształcącego im. Jana III Sobieskiego w Warszawie z przedstawicielkami Ambasady Grecji. Ambasadę reprezentowały Pani Paraskevi Charitidou, zastępca szefa misji oraz Pani Maria Mondelou, Pierwszy Sekretarz w Biurze Prasowym Ambasady Grecji w Warszawie.
Prelegentki omówiły historię i system polityczny Grecji oraz aktualne działania Grecji w Unii Europejskiej. Opowiedziały również o warunkach studiowania w tym kraju i stypendiach dostępnych dla polskich studentów. Podczas prezentacji został wyświetlony krótki film o Atenach.
Po wykładzie miała miejsce dyskusja, w czasie której przedstawicielki Ambasady odpowiedziały na liczne pytania publiczności dotyczące stereotypów o Polakach, greckiej kultury, popularnych Greków, kryzysu gospodarczego, relacji z Turcją, aktualnego sporu między Grecją i Byłą Jugosłowiańską Republiką Macedonii przed Międzynarodowym Trybunałem Sprawiedliwości oraz doświadczeń czterech prezydencji Grecji w Radzie Unii Europejskiej.
W spotkaniu uczestniczyło ponad 70 osób.

Online petition to save department of Greek Studies at King`s College London

Διάλεξη για την βενετοκρατούμενη Σητεία στο Πανεπιστήμιο Βαρσοβίας (23/2/2010)

Διάλεξη με θέμα «Η βενετοκρατούμενη Σητεία – Αρχειακή έρευνα για την ιστορία της πόλης» έδωσε η Γραμματέας Επικοινωνίας του Γραφείου Τύπου και Επικοινωνίας Βαρσοβίας, Μαρία Μονδέλου, στις 23 Φεβρουαρίου στο Πανεπιστήμιο Βαρσοβίας.
Πρόκειται για την δεύτερη διάλεξη που πραγματοποιείται ύστερα από πρόσκληση του Ινστιτούτου Διεπιστημονικών Σπουδών (Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies) “Artes Liberales” του Πανεπιστημίου της Βαρσοβίας, με πρωτοβουλία της καθηγήτριας Malgorzata Borowska, διευθύντριας του Τμήματος Νεοελληνικής Φιλολογίας.

Οι φοιτητές ενημερώθηκαν για τον τρόπο αναζήτησης ανέκδοτου αρχειακού υλικού σε Αρχεία και Βιβλιοθήκες της Ιταλίας, όπως το Κρατικό Αρχείο της Βενετίας, το Αρχείο του Βατικανού και η Μαρκιανή Βιβλιοθήκη της Βενετίας. Επισημάνθηκαν τα κυριότερα χαρακτηριστικά των πηγών (επίσημες πηγές, συμβολαιογραφικό αρχείο), καθώς και μερικά συμπεράσματα από τη μελέτη του υλικού, τα οποία παρουσιάζονται στην υπό εκπόνηση διδακτορική διατριβή της ομιλήτριας.
Τέλος, παρουσιάστηκαν στους φοιτητές αντίγραφα ανέκδοτων χειρογράφων της εποχής, τα οποία αναγνώστηκαν, με παράλληλη εξήγηση βασικών κανόνων  παλαιογραφίας.

Lecture “The Venetian Dominion in Sitia (Crete) – Research on the history of the town” (University of Warsaw, 23/2/2010) 

A lecture about “The Venetian  Dominion in Sitia (Crete) – Research on the history of the town” was hold by the Press Attachè of the Embassy of Greece in Warsaw, Maria Mondelou, on the 23rd February at the University of Warsaw.
It was the second lecture that took place, after the one on the 8^th of December 2009, following an invitation by the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies “Artes Liberales” of the University of Warsaw and the director at the Department of Modern Greek Philology, Malgorzata Borowska.
The lecture was attended by the students of the 4^th semester in Modern Greek Philology, that includes lessons on the subject “Cretan masterpieces of the Renaissance”.
Main aspects of the Venetian dominion in the territory of Sitia (town and villages), particularly during the late period of the Venetian dominion (16^th and 17^th centuries), as well as some of the institutions that Venice introduced in Sitia (administration, ecclesiastical institutions, justice etc.) were analysed. The social stratification in the town and the villages, the social relations, the characteristics of the economy, the form of the town and the way of life of the inhabitants were, also, described. A partiticular mention was made for Vitsentzos Kornaros, born in Sitia, famous for his poem “Erotokritos”, which is included in the studies of the Polish students.
The students were informed about the research of unpublished sources of archives, that was effected by the lecturer in Archives and Libraries in Italy, such as the National Archive of Venice, the Vatican Archives and the “Marciana”  Library of Venice. Main characteristics of the sources (official documents and notarial archives) were highlighted, as well as some of the results of the study, which are presented in the PhD of the lecturer.
Finally, copies of unedited documents of the 16^th century were presented and read to the students.

Wykład na temat Sitii pod panowaniem weneckim, wygłoszony na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim (23/2/2010)

Wykład pod tytułem „Sitia, pod panowaniem weneckim – badanie archiwalne na temat historii miasta” został wygłoszony przez Marię Mondelou, Attaché Prasowego Ambasady Grecji w dniu 23 lutego na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim.
Był to już drugi wykład wygłoszony pod otrzymaniu zaproszenia przez Instytut Studiów Interdyscyplinarnych „Artes Liberales” z inicjatywy profesor dr hab. Małgorzaty Borowskiej, Kierownika Wydziału Filologii Nowogreckiej. 
Wykład został wysłuchany przez studentów II roku filologii nowogreckiej w ramach zajęć „Kreteńskie arcydzieła okresu Odroczenia”.

Ρέα Γαλανάκη “Φωτιές του Ιούδα, Στάχτες του Οιδίποδα”

		Μυθιστόρημα  Η άφιξη μιας νεαρής Ελληνοεβραίας δασκάλας σε ορεινό χωριό της Κρήτης, το έτος 2000, όσο και το πασχαλινό έθιμο της καύσης του Ιούδα, δίνουν αφορμή για μια τομή στο “άβατον” των σύγχρονων ορεινών κοινωνιών της νήσου, αλλά και για το ξεδίπλωμα μιας παλιάς κρητικής παράδοσης, που αποδίδει στο πρόσωπο του βιβλικού Ιούδα τη μοίρα του μυθικού Οιδίποδα. Νόμος και παρανομία, έρωτες και τελετουργίες, φονικά και αποσιωπήσεις, ρηξικέλευθες αλλά και απαρχαιωμένες αντιλήψεις, συνθέτουν ένα σκηνικό γεμάτο συγκρούσεις και αντιφάσεις, μέσα στο οποίο η νεαρή γυναίκα αναζητεί τις ρίζες της ταραγμένης οικογενειακής της ιστορίας. Παράλληλα, ο περί τον Ιούδα και τον Οιδίποδα μύθος, ένας μύθος για το απόλυτο κακό, βαδίζει πάνω στα σκοτεινά δικά του μονοπάτια: ξεκινά από τα βάθη του χρόνου και φθάνει ως τις μέρες μας, για να υπηρετήσει αλλά και να ερμηνεύσει τις άκαμπτες δομές των ορεινών κλειστών κοινωνιών. Ένα “διπλό” βιβλίο, που αποκαλύπτει ότι μύθος και σύγχρονη ζωή συμπλέκονται σε ενιαίο σώμα, όπως άλλωστε και η λογοτεχνία με την πραγματικότητα.

Cultural ties with Georgia

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) The Institute of Classical, Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies of the Tbilisi State University has undertaken the initiative to compile the first Modern Greek-Georgian Dictionary, containing 50,000 words. The project was funded by the Kostas and Eleni Ourani Foundation. 

The Greek element has been present in Georgia since antiquity. The first trips had commercial purpose and within years, the first cultural enclaves were established.
The two early Georgian kingdoms of late antiquity were known to ancient Greeks as Iberia in the east and Colchis in the West.
The Western part was strongly influenced by Greek culture – as evidenced in Greek mythology and the story of Jason seeking the Golden Fleece in Colchis – and the eastern part by the Persians.
Greeks in Georgia established ties with the Byzantine Empire, building on a common religious background.
Until recently (1989), the Greek community in Georgia counted some 100,000 residents, but nowadays the population totals between 15,000- 20,000.

Μεταξύ σφύρας και Αλιάκμονος

Ένα χρόνο μετά το μυθιστόρημα «Όλα βαίνουν καλώς εναντίον μας» για το Μάρκο Βαμβακάρη, ο Γιώργος Σκαμπαρδώνης επανέρχεται με μια συλλογή διηγημάτων, γραμμένων από το 2004 έως τα μέσα του 2009.
Στα διηγήματα αυτά κυριαρχούν κι επανέρχονται θέματα από το οικείο σύμπαν του συγγραφέα: τα άφεγγα μέρη, οι αναδιπλώσεις της μνήμης, οι υπόγειες κρύπτες. Το ανεπαλήθευτο, το παίγνιο, οι εμμονές: το νερό, η θάλασσα, η υπέρβαση της αντοχής, η απώλεια. Οι δύσκολες σχέσεις, η φθορά, η κρίσιμη στιγμή που φέρνει την αλλοίωση και σε ορίζει. Η μοναχικότητα, τα ζώα, ο φόβος, η πνιγμονή, ο ακρωτηριασμός, η πτήση, το αναπάντεχο. Η μεγάλη αναμονή, η ματαιότητα, η Ιστορία που διαβρώνει το τώρα. Η ειρωνεία του τυχαίου που μεταβάλλει τα πάντα. Τα μεγάλα κατορθώματα που γλυκαίνουν παλιές μαχαιριές. Το κενό, ως μουσική που πυκνώνει και παρηγορεί.
Σταθερά θέματα που φεύγουν, επανέρχονται μεταμφιεσμένα κι αντανακλούν σε 27 διηγήματα υφασμένα πάνω σε σταθερές, αόρατες γραμμές και σε ρευστά σχέδια, μεταξύ μιας ύπερθεν μοίρας και του σουρεαλισμού της πραγματικότητας, μεταξύ σφύρας και Αλιάκμονος.

Giorgos Skambardonis “Metaxy sfyras kai Aliakmonos” 

One year after his last novel “Ola vainoun kalos enantion mas”, the writer and journalist Giorgos Scambardonis has recently published a book of narrations, written during the period 2004-2009.
Twenty-seven short stories (editions Ellinika Grammata), about some of the writer`s familiar themes, such as the water, the sea, difficult relationships, animals, fear, loneliness, vanity, loss, memory, the history that alterates the present, the irony of the unexpected that changes everything, the exceeding of endurance, the long waiting.
Constant subjects that come back in a different manner, linked with invisible lines, between a fate from above and the surrealism of real life.

Journal of Modern Greek Studies

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   Praised as “a magnificent scholarly journal” by Choice magazine, the Journal of Modern Greek Studies is a semi-annual publication devoted to all aspects of Modern Greek scholarship, published every May and October. Contributors include internationally acclaimed scholars in the fields of history, literature, anthropology, politics, Byzantine and modern Greece studies. The journal is edited by a board of scholars appointed by the Modern Greek Studies Association.  Modern Greek Studies cover the Greek world from the fall of the Byzantine Empire to the present. Interdisciplinary programmes pertaining to the language, literature, culture, history and politics of modern Greece have been established worldwide. Many of these programmes sponsor books, regular conferences, graduate fellowships, and translation prizes.

Modern Art at the Athens Municipal Centre

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   The City of Athens Cultural Organisation presents, for the first time in Greece, the exhibition, “From classical Modernism to Postmodernism,” featuring the most important pieces from Monsignore Otto Mauer’s collection in the Dom Museum in Vienna. Fifty masterpieces by 27 top artists of the 20th century will feature in this exhibition, including works by Picasso, Klimt, Kokoschka, Klee, Kandinsky, Chagall, Matisse, Braque and Schiele.

The exhibition runs until May 27.

Book on the Making of Modern Greece

The Making of Modern Greece, Nationalism, Romanticism, and the Uses of the Past (1797–1896), edited by Roderick Beaton and David Ricks, King’s College London, UK Ashgate, May 2009.  This book brings together the work of scholars from a variety of disciplines to explore the ‘making’ of Greece as a modern state, using current theoretical and historical thinking about nations and nationalism in the modern world.  It spans the period from 1797 – when Rigas Velestinlis published a constitution for an imaginary ‘Hellenic Republic’ – to the establishment of the modern Olympic Games, in Athens in 1896, an occasion which sealed with international approval the hard-won self-image of ‘Modern Greece’. 

New Greek-Dutch, Dutch-Greek Dictionary

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   A new Greek-Dutch, Dutch-Greek dictionary has been published by Prisma, containing 60,000 words. After 12 years of work, the team of the Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies of the Amsterdam University, under the direction of professor Arnold van Gemert, presented its monumental achievement in two volumes. The dictionary was financed by state and private institutions in the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece and Cyprus and was officially presented on March 5 at the Greek Embassy in The Hague, and March 9 at the Netherlands Institute in Athens, in cooperation with the Royal Dutch Embassy in Athens.
