Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew visits Poland

His All Holiness, Bartholomew, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch started a visit to Poland on Monday.

While in Poland Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will visit Warsaw, Lublin and the Holy Mountain of Grabarka to attend the Transfiguration feast celebrations in the sanctuary, PAP was told by spokesperson for the Polish Orthodox Church father Henryk Paprocki.
The Transfiguration is the biggest Orthodox feast in Poland. Pilgrimages to Grabarka, the main Orthodox cult site in Poland, date back to 1710.
On Tuesday Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will meet with Sejm Speaker Grzegorz Schetyna.
On Friday he will receive an honorary doctorate of the John Paul II Catholic Lublin University during a ceremony in Lublin.
There are from 550 to 600 thousand Orthodox faithful in Poland, mainly in the Podlasie northeastern region.

Στην ενότητα με τίτλο «Ταβέρνα κάτω από τα αστέρια», ειδική αναφορά γίνεται στους μεζέδες και τα κυριότερα πιάτα της ελληνικής κουζίνας. Καταληκτικά σημειώνεται ότι «όταν τα τζιτζίκια τραγουδούν σαν τρελά κατά τη διάρκεια του δείπνου και φτάνει ο ήχος των κυμάτων από την ακρογιαλιά, διότι τα τραπέζια είναι στημένα κοντά στο νερό, και πάνω από τα κεφάλια βλέπει κανείς τον έναστρο ουρανό, όλα αποκτούν μια εκλεκτή γεύση. Είμαστε περίεργοι τι θα έλεγε τώρα ο Δίας;».

A Natural Wonder in Greece

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) The waterfall of Trachoni or Livaditis in northeast Greece is a picturesque and almost mystical waterfall, as it is surrounded by myths and legends lost in the mists of time. In fact, there is a dispute over the name of the waterfall between two neighbouring municipalities: the residents of Paranesti Municipality in Drama Perfecture call it Thrachoni, while the residents of Stavroupoli Municipality of the adjacent Prefecture of Xanthi call it Livaditis.  Whatever the name is, Trahoni or Livaditis is a magnificent 40 meters high waterfall, the tallest one on the Rodopi Mountain Range in Thrace.  During the winter, when temperatures drop below zero, the landscape is spectacular with the waterfall turning into a huge ice sculpture.  You Tube: The Waterfall of Leivaditis-Xanthi-Greece

Greece: 9 Geo-Wonders on Pindos Mountain

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) The rocks of Deskati in north-western Greece’s prefecture of Grevena – a European Destination of Excellence –  have attracted the interest of geologists around the world as they tell the geological history of the earth and were the basis for the development of the tectonic plates theory.  Deskati and the greater region of Vounasa are among the nine geo-wonders in the Pindos Mountain Range that were the subject of a scientific conference held in the Prefecture of Grevena aimed at their promotion into tourist destinations. The rocks of Deskati were created 700 million years ago when the ancient super continent Pangaea (meaning “all earth” in Greek) broke up to form the European and African continents. Later they were submerged into the Tethys Ocean that existed between the continents and united the region of today’s Britain with China.  The nine geo-wonders of Pindos include the heavily deformed limestone rocks at Mt Tsourgiakas and their small waterfalls, the gorge of Portitsa, the Pierced Rock formed as a result of erosion, Vasilitsa and its multicoloured rocks, the villages of Dotsiko and Mesolouri with their 30-million-year old coral reef and the village of Monachiti with its 50-meter wide vertical rocks. Meanwhile, the Aliakmon River Gorge is currently being studied by scientists from the United States, the UK, Serbia, Italy and Greece in an intense effort to have its geological data recorded considering that by the end of the next decade it will be flooded as soon as the construction of the Public Power Corporation (DEI) “Ilarion” Dam is completed.

Mount Athos Splendor in Paris

Greece: Winter Destinations

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   Breathtaking cliffs and mountains, rugged scenery, lakes, picturesque villages, and traditional architecture make central Greece one of the most beautiful regions in the country, offering outdoor enthusiasts plenty of opportunities for rock climbing and hiking, mountain skiing, kayaking, rafting, biking as well as cave exploration.  Evrytania, at the southern end of the Pindos mountain range, being dubbed “Greece’s Switzerland” is a very popular destination during the winter months. One can visit the Velouchi skiing centre at an elevation of 1,800 meters, the Mikro and Megalo Horio, two well-known villages, Proussos village, best known for its old monastery with the famous icon of Our Lady of Proussos and the Koryschades settlement which hosted the elected National Assembly, in May 1944, during the German occupation. AthensPlus: The ultimate winter destination  (p.42)  Meteora (meaning “suspended in the air”) in the region of Thessaly, is known for the complex of 24 monasteries on the top of impressive rock towers, a strange but breathtaking landscape that has been sculpted by wind and water over thousands of years.
