Διάλεξη καθηγητή Θεοδόση Τάσιου για την αρχαία ελληνική τεχνολογία (Βαρσοβία, 27/3/2012)

Διάλεξη με θέμα «Εισαγωγή στην αρχαία ελληνική τεχνολογία» έδωσε στις 27 Μαρτίου στη Βαρσοβία ο καθηγητής του Εθνικού Μετσόβιου Πολυτεχνείου, Θεοδόσης Τάσιος.
Η διάλεξη διοργανώθηκε από τον Σύνδεσμο Ελλήνων Επιχειρηματιών στην Πολωνία «Ερμής», σε συνεργασία με το Τεχνικό Επιμελητήριο Ελλάδας, και πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Μουσείο Τεχνικής της Βαρσοβίας.
Στην εισαγωγή, ο καθηγητής υπογράμμισε ότι η τεχνολογία αποτελούσε σημαντικότατη πλευρά της ζωής των αρχαίων Ελλήνων, οι οποίοι “πίστευαν ότι η τεχνολογία ήταν δώρο των θεών”. 
Αναφέρθηκε στις εξαιρετικές τεχνικές ικανότητες των Αχαιών, ήδη από τους μυκηναϊκούς χρόνους (αποξήρανση Κωπαϊδας τον 4ο αι. π.Χ., μυκηναϊκοί θόλοι, μυκηναϊκά πλοία σε ολόκληρη την Μεσόγειο) και στην ριζική μεταβολή στην τεχνολογία που παρατηρείται γύρω στο 600 π.Χ. σε ελληνικές χώρες και κυρίως, στην Ιωνία, με την ανάπτυξη της επιστήμης και της γεωμετρίας (χάραξη από τον Ευπαλίνο της σήραγγας στη Σάμο, κατασκευή μουσικών οργάνων, μηχανοποίηση ανύψωσης φορτίων στα μεταλλουργεία Λαυρίου, ναυπήγηση «τριήρεων», πολεμικές μηχανές (καταπέλτης) κ.ά).
Περνώντας στην ελληνιστική εποχή, υποστήριξε ότι η αλεξανδρινή τεχνολογία αποτέλεσε την “κορύφωση της δισχιλιετούς ελληνικής τεχνολογίας” και περιέγραψε, μεταξύ άλλων, μηχανές του Κτησίβιου, όπως οι αντλίες-κοχλίες και το μουσικό όργανο «ύδραυλις», καθώς και επιτεύγματα του Αρχιμήδη σε πέντε επιστήμες, όπως οι μελέτες για την ευστάθεια των πλοίων και η κατά των Ρωμαίων άμυνα των Συρακουσών (με γερανούς).
Προβλήθηκε, στη συνέχεια, η βραβευμένη ταινία «Δίολκος», παραγωγής του Τεχνικού Επιμελητηρίου Ελλάδας, με δημιουργό και αφηγητή τον καθηγητή Τάσιο, η οποία αναπαριστά ένα εξαιρετικό μνημείο τεχνικού πολιτισμού της αρχαίας Ελλάδας, μία οδό από ξηράς για την μεταφορά πλοίων ανάμεσα στον Σαρωνικό και τον Κορινθιακό κόλπο.
Ακολούθησε συζήτηση με το κοινό, το οποίο αποτελούσαν καθηγητές του Τμήματος Ελληνικών Σπουδών και άλλων τμημάτων του Πανεπιστημίου Βαρσοβίας, μέλη του Συνδέσμου Ελλήνων Επιχειρηματιών, πολωνοί φιλέλληνες, ομογενείς κ.ά.
Στην διοργάνωση και την προβολή της εκδήλωσης συμμετείχε το Γραφείο Τύπου, το οποίο παρέστη στην διάλεξη.

Holocaust Memorial Day

The opening of the exhibition The Memorial: 16 Artists Propose, featuring projects that were submitted last year by 16 artists, as part of an international competition for the construction of a Holocaust Memorial of Greek Jews, took place at the Jewish Museum of Greece.
The competition was conducted by the Jewish Community of Athens and resulted in the selection of the work of artist DeAnna Maganias which was unveiled at a special event in May 2010. The museum is also organising a week-long programme of educational activities and memorial events, lasting until February 4.

The exhibition –which will remain open until August 2011- is part of events that have been planned for the Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day, co-organized by the Attica region and the Jewish community of Athens for January 26 and 27. A memorial service was held on the 27th of January, at the Athens Synagogue in Thisseio, to be followed by a speech by University of Athens History Professor, Hagen Fleischer.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Dimitris Droutsas issued a statement on the occasion of the Holocaust Memorial Day, in which he referred to Greece’s continuing efforts to preseve historical memory and educate younger generations. He further added that preparations are underway for a permanent Greek exhibition at the Auschwitz Museum.

Acropolis Museum receives British award

The Acropolis Museum in Athens (see Photo Gallery) has won the British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW) prestigious global award for the Best Worldwide Tourism Project for 2010.
The prize was presented to Deputy Culture and Tourism Minister George Nikitiades, during a ceremony in London on November 7.
Nikitiades thanked the organizers and the travel writers who voted for the Acropolis Museum, noting that this distinction opens the door for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to their home.
Nikitiades is currently in London with a Greek National Tourism Organisation delegation to participate at the World Travel Market fair, taking place from November 8 to 11.

Εκδηλώσεις “Ευρωπαϊκής Ημέρας Γλωσσών” (Βαρσοβία, 20-27/9/2010)- Συμμετοχή Γραφείου Τύπου Βαρσοβίας

Οι φετινές εκδηλώσεις της «Ευρωπαϊκής Ημέρας Γλωσσών 2010» πραγματοποιήθηκαν στη Βαρσοβία από τις 20 έως τις 27 Σεπτεμβρίου.
Το Γραφείο Τύπου, για μία ακόμη χρονιά, συμμετείχε στη διοργάνωση των εκδηλώσεων προβολής των ευρωπαϊκών γλωσσών, εκδηλώσεις που στοχεύουν στην ενημέρωση του πολωνικού κοινού για τον γλωσσικό και πολιτιστικό πλούτο των χωρών της Ευρώπης. Η Ευρωπαϊκή Ημέρα Γλωσσών θεσπίστηκε από το Συμβούλιο της Ευρώπης το 2001.
Διοργανωτές των εκδηλώσεων ήταν δεκατρείς χώρες, μέλη του EUNIC Cluster Βαρσοβίας (European Union National Institutes for Culture): Ελλάδα (Γραφείο Τύπου Ελληνικής Πρεσβείας), Εσθονία (Πρεσβεία Εσθονίας), Ιρλανδία (Πρεσβεία Ιρλανδίας), Μεγ. Βρετανία (British Council), Βέλγιο (Πρεσβεία Βελγίου), Δανία (Πολιτιστικό Ινστιτούτο Δανίας), Γερμανία (Goethe-Institut), Πορτογαλία (Ινστιτούτο Camoes), Γαλλία (Γαλλικό Ινστιτούτο), Ιταλία (Ιταλικό Ινστιτούτο), Αυστρία (Αυστριακό Ινστιτούτο), Ρουμανία (Ρουμανικό Ινστιτούτο), Ρωσία (Ρωσικό Κέντρο Επιστήμης και Πολιτισμού).
Στη διοργάνωση συμμετείχαν, επίσης, το EUNIC Cluster Βαρσοβίας, η Αντιπροσωπεία της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής στην Πολωνία, το πολωνικό Ίδρυμα για την Ανάπτυξη του Εκπαιδευτικού Συστήματος, το Πανεπιστήμιο Βαρσοβίας, το Εκπαιδευτικό Τμήμα του Δήμου Βαρσοβίας, το Κρατικό Εθνογραφικό Μουσείο στη Βαρσοβία, η Δημόσια Βιβλιοθήκη της συνοικίας Praga (Δήμος Βαρσοβίας), το πολωνικό Κέντρο για την Ανάπτυξη της Εκπαίδευσης, η πολωνική Κρατική Επιτροπή για την Πιστοποίηση της Επάρκειας της Πολωνικής ως Ξένης Γλώσσας. Οι εκδηλώσεις τελούσαν υπό την αιγίδα του πολωνικού Υπουργείου Εθνικής Παιδείας, του πολωνικού Υπουργείου Επιστήμης και Ανώτερης Εκπαίδευσης, της Δημάρχου Βαρσοβίας και της Πρυτάνεως του Πανεπιστημίου Βαρσοβίας.
Η απήχηση των εκδηλώσεων τις προηγούμενες χρονιές οδήγησε τους διοργανωτές στην απόφαση για την φετινή διοργάνωση πολυήμερων εκδηλώσεων, με ποικίλο περιεχόμενο.

Η ελληνική συμμετοχή στις εκδηλώσεις, η οποία περιελάμβανε μεταξύ άλλων φεστιβάλ ταινιών, μάθημα ελληνικής γλώσσας, σεμινάριο για το ζεϊμπέκικο, ελληνικό περίπτερο κ.ά., διοργανώθηκε από τη Γραμματέα Επικοινωνίας, Μαρία Μονδέλου.

Karaghiozis: “Inextricable part of Greek Culture”

Greece is planning to press its claims to Karaghiozis, a shadow puppet theatre character that UNESCO has deemed to be part of Turkey’s cultural heritage.
“Karaghiozis is an extricable part of our culture,” Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson said, adding that UNESCO allows neighbouring countries to access the same commodity when it comes to intangible cultural heritage.
The issue has prompted an announcement by the Ministry of Culture, according to which, “it is commonly known and undoubted that shadow theatre refers to a cultural tradition which surpasses boundaries and spans through the Balkans, and the broader East, long time before the emergence of contemporary states.

Concerning the Greek version of Karaghiozis, it represents a vivid chapter of Modern Greek culture, which defends traditional values broadly cherished by the Greek people.”

Athens & Epidaurus Festival 2010

It seems that ages have gone by since Maria Callas stunned the audience by performing ‘Norma’ at the Epidaurus theatre as part of events celebrating the Greek festival in 1960. The 2010 Greek Festival, which opens today, encompasses a variety of artistic expressions.  

Its aim is to present contemporary artists from around the globe and acquaint the world public with both innovative and pervasive trends of modern artistic creations. 
The festival spans from June to mid –August with old and new venues hosting the events, such as the Herodus Attikus theatre, the Benaki Museum, and the Building H at the Peiraios 260 complex.
This year music lovers will have the opportunity to enjoy Rufus Wainwright in a one-man-show on June 5 at the Lycabettus Hill Theatre.
In the first half, he will present his newly- released album, while in the second, he will play major hits from his entire career.

Πολωνική ζωγραφική στο Μουσείο Φρυσίρα

"Η γυναίκα με γάντι" του πολωνού ζωγράφου Γκρ. Βνιεκ

Το Μουσείο Φρυσίρα στο κτίριο της Μονής Αστερίου 3 στην Πλάκα έχει κερδίσει μέσα στα χρόνια τον ρόλο του Ιδρύματος όπου μπορείς να δεις συστηματικά σύγχρονη παραστατική ζωγραφική.
Από τις 14 Απριλίου στη γνωστή εκθεσιακή σειρά του «Το βλέμμα του ζωγράφου» κεντρικό πρόσωπο είναι ο Πολωνός ζωγράφος Γκρέγκορ Βνιεκ. Εκτός από την παρουσίαση της ζωγραφικής του ο εικαστικός, εκπρόσωπος της ομάδας νέων αναπαραστατικών ζωγράφων από την Κρακοβία, έχει επιλέξει να δείξει και 70 έργα συναδέλφων του από τη συλλογή του Μουσείου Φρυσίρα. Στους εκθεσιακούς χώρους φιλοξενούνται, μαζί με τα δικά του έργα, συνολικά 150 πίνακες. Συνεκτικό στοιχείο όλων είναι η χωρίς ενοχές και συμπλέγματα επιστροφή της ζωγραφικής στην παράδοση της αναπαράστασης. Δεν πρόκειται, όμως, για μια στείρα επιστροφή στις κατακτήσεις του παρελθόντος, αλλά για τέχνη που εμπλέκει δημιουργικά τη ζωγραφική με τις σύγχρονες καλλιτεχνικές αναζητήσεις.
Ο Γκρ. Βνιεκ ακολούθησε τη συμβουλή του σπουδαίου Γερμανού ζωγράφου Γκέρχαρντ Ρίχτερ, που θεωρούσε ζωγράφο εκείνον που μπορούσε να στηριχτεί σε μια βαθιά αγάπη για τον άνθρωπο και να τον τοποθετήσει στο επίκεντρο του εικαστικού του σύμπαντος. Σε κάθε ευκαιρία επισημαίνει το ενδιαφέρον του για την ανθρώπινη μορφή, το περιβάλλον και την ύπαρξή της. «Το θέμα είναι πολύ σημαντικό, με οδηγεί εγγύτερα στο πρωτογενές», έγραφε σε κατάλογο παλαιότερης έκθεσής του. Και πρόσθετε: «Επιλέγω θέματα με ισχυρό συναισθηματικό αντίκτυπο -αιφνίδιες ασθένειες, τυχαία περιστατικά (π.χ. η πτώση ενός δέντρου, η τοποθέτηση ενός φράχτη, κατασκευαστικά έργα), σκηνές της καθημερινότητας, της φτώχειας και της ανέχειας. Κατανοώ πως πρόκειται για δύσκολα θέματα, όμως νιώθω ταυτόχρονα πως απαιτούν άμεση δράση, εξπρεσιονιστικές φόρμες, βίαια χρώματα, δυναμικά καδραρίσματα. Αναζητώ τον δικό μου τρόπο θεώρησης του σύγχρονου ανθρώπου. Θέλω να πλησιάσω όσο γίνεται περισσότερο την αλήθεια, να πάω πέρα από τα τείχη που δεν κρύβουν τίποτα πίσω τους».
Είναι εμφανές ότι ο Πολωνός ζωγράφος δεν δίστασε ποτέ να παρουσιάσει τη δυστυχία της καθημερινότητας και ότι δεν υπέκυψε στους κανόνες της ανώδυνης διακοσμητικής τέχνης, που συνεπήρε τόσους συναδέλφους του σε όλη την Ευρώπη. Κατάφερε να διατηρήσει ζωηρό το ενδιαφέρον του για κοινωνικά και πολιτικά ζητήματα σχετικά και με τη σημασία της ιστορικής μνήμης εν μέσω των σαρωτικών αλλαγών που επήλθαν τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες στις πρώην κομμουνιστικές χώρες της Κεντρικής και Ανατολικής Ευρώπης.
Ο Γκρ. Βνιεκ δεν δυσκολεύτηκε να επιλέξει 70 και πλέον έργα συναδέλφων του από τη συλλογή του Μουσείου Φρυσίρα και να επιμεληθεί την έκθεση που παρουσιάζεται παράλληλα με τη δική του. Με τους περισσότερους από αυτούς μοιράζεται το ίδιο πάθος και παρόμοιες αναζητήσεις. Ανάμεσά τους βρίσκονται πίνακες των Αντρέα Μαρτινέλι, Ζαν Ρουστέν, Πίτερ Μπλέικ, Κλάιβ Σμιθ, Απόστολου Γεωργίου, Κρίστοφερ Λεμπρούν, Αλέξη Βερούκα, Πάουλα Ρέγκο, Βικτόρια Ράσελ, Μπραν Ρενό, Δημήτρη Τζαμουράνη κ.ά.
«Οι καλλιτέχνες που επέλεξα είναι καλλιτέχνες για τους οποίους το μάτι και η εξαντλητική παρατήρηση του χώρου και της μορφής έχουν καίρια σημασία. Συνηθίζουμε να αναφερόμαστε στο μάτι ή και στο χέρι του ζωγράφου, όμως υπάρχει επίσης και η διάνοιά του η οποία ενεργοποιεί την καλλιτεχνική δημιουργία», σημειώνει ο Γκρ. Βνιεκ. Αναφέρεται με ενθουσιασμό στη δουλειά των συναδέλφων του. «Βαθύτατα μου κέντρισε το ενδιαφέρον ο τρόπος που ο Πίτερ Μπλέικ προσπάθησε να προσεγγίσει την ανθρώπινη μορφή ως κάτι καλυμμένο, δύσμορφο, χωρίς αναλογίες, επιλέγοντας τη φιγούρα του νάνου, παραπέμποντας στους νάνους του Βελάσκεθ αλλά και στον μυθικό κόσμο του Ζορό, του γενναίου υπερασπιστή των καταπιεσμένων που εξελίχθηκε σε σύμβολο της pop κουλτούρας».

Greece`s presentation by the Greek Embassy and the Press Office at the European Information Centre in Warsaw (19/3/2010)

A presentation of Greece by the Greek Embassy and the Press Office in Warsaw took place at the European Information Centre of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 19^th March 2010 (www.cie.gov.pl).
Various aspects of Greece were presented by the Deputy Head of Mission, Paraskevi Charitidou, and the Press Attache, Maria Mondelou.
The audience, 70  students of higher secondary schools of Warsaw, was informed about Greece`s geostrategic position, its political system, the participation in international organizations, such as the EU and the NATO, the Greek Presidencies in the EU.
A brief presentation of the Greek history, mainly during the modern and contemporary period, was followed by characteristic examples of Greek culture, in the fields of literature, poetry, music, theatre and cinema.
Views of the New Acropolis Museum were presented, as well as Greece`s request for the restitution of the Parthenon Marbles.
During the discussion, the students were informed about Greece`s foreign policy, the situation of the Greek economy, tourism, the educational system and the scholarships offered for foreign students. They were, also, particularly interested about the image of Poles in Greece and their life.
 The European Information Centre, that invited the Greek Embassy to make the presentation of Greece, organizes annually discussions with representatives of the EU member states.

Spotkanie z przedstawicielkami Ambasady Grecji

 19 marca 2010 r. w Centrum Informacji Europejskiej MSZ odbyło się spotkanie uczniów XL Liceum Ogólnokształcącego im. S. Żeromskiego oraz LXXV Liceum Ogólnokształcącego im. Jana III Sobieskiego w Warszawie z przedstawicielkami Ambasady Grecji. Ambasadę reprezentowały Pani Paraskevi Charitidou, zastępca szefa misji oraz Pani Maria Mondelou, Pierwszy Sekretarz w Biurze Prasowym Ambasady Grecji w Warszawie.
Prelegentki omówiły historię i system polityczny Grecji oraz aktualne działania Grecji w Unii Europejskiej. Opowiedziały również o warunkach studiowania w tym kraju i stypendiach dostępnych dla polskich studentów. Podczas prezentacji został wyświetlony krótki film o Atenach.
Po wykładzie miała miejsce dyskusja, w czasie której przedstawicielki Ambasady odpowiedziały na liczne pytania publiczności dotyczące stereotypów o Polakach, greckiej kultury, popularnych Greków, kryzysu gospodarczego, relacji z Turcją, aktualnego sporu między Grecją i Byłą Jugosłowiańską Republiką Macedonii przed Międzynarodowym Trybunałem Sprawiedliwości oraz doświadczeń czterech prezydencji Grecji w Radzie Unii Europejskiej.
W spotkaniu uczestniczyło ponad 70 osób.

Melina Mercouri: A tribute to the “last Greek Goddess”

Sixteen years have passed since Melina Mercouri, one of the great women of Greece, died on March 6, 1994. On the 16^th anniversary of her death, as well as of International Women’s Day (March 8), the Eugenides Foundation is hosting an exhibition-tribute to the late, multifaceted actress and politician, emphasizing her relationship to education and culture. 
Internationally acclaimed actress, singer and politician, Melina was characterized by many as the epitome of womanhood, as well as the “last Greek Goddess.”
An ardent supporter of the repatriation of the Parthenon Marbles from the British Museum, Melina, as minister of Culture, openly claimed them and devoted herself to this goal.
The exhibition titled “Melina-Education-Culture” will run from March 9 to April 8.

Holocaust Remembrance Day

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) Liberation of Auschwitz Anniversary

“Auschwitz took the lives of many; Greek Jews were dispro­portio­na­tely numerous among them. Greeks of other faiths also paid a heavy price, often in defence of their Jewish brethren.

Many have been declared Righteous among the Nations and their names are engraved at the Holocaust Memorial of Yad Vashem,” Alternate Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas said in a statement, issued on January 27, on the 65^th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp.
This year also marks the tenth anniversary of the Stockholm Declaration which launched a fertile rethinking of the Holocaust in Europe and Greece is proud to be among the original signatories of this epochal document, said Droutsas.

“Greeks in Auschwitz-Birkenau” 

At a press conference at Greece’s Press and Communication Office in New York, on January 26, the head of the Foreign Ministry’s Diplomatic and Historical Archives, Fotini Tomai presented a series of evidence, documents and testimonies that reveal and highlight the extent of human tragedy as recorded in the book “Greeks in Auschwitz-Birkenau.”
This publication of the Foreign Ministry (in Greek and English) will be presented today at a special event at the Greek Consulate General in New York.

Tsarouchis`exhibition at the Benaki Museum

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)  EXHIBITION: A Tsarouchis Retrospective @ Benaki Museum
A major exhibition focusing on the work of Yannis Tsarouchis is being staged at the Benaki Museum, until March 14, to celebrate the centenary of the artist’s birth.
This is the first retrospective of Yannis Tsarouchis works in Athens aiming to showcase representative works from all the periods of the artist’s output.

”Έρως: από τη Θεογονία του Ησιόδου στην ύστερη Αρχαιότητα”- Μουσείο Κυκλαδικής Τέχνης

”Έρως: από τη Θεογονία του Ησιόδου στην ύστερη Αρχαιότητα” Μια μεγάλη αρχαιολογική έκθεση αφιερωμένη στον Έρωτα και τις διάφορες εκφάνσεις που πήρε κατά την αρχαιότητα – από τις πρώτες αναφορές του στα κείμενα του Ησίοδου έως τους ρωμαϊκούς χρόνους παρουσιάζεται στο Μουσείο Κυκλαδικής Τέχνης.
Η έκθεση περιλαμβάνει 270 εκθέματα από 45 αρχαιολογικά Μουσεία της Ελλάδας, της Κύπρου, της Ιταλίας και της Γαλλίας. Δίνουν  ραντεβού στο Μουσείο Κυκλαδικής Τέχνης σε μια τολμηρή και αποκαλυπτική έκθεση που έχει ως θέμα της τον χρυσόφτερο θεό και ακαταμάχητο δαίμονα με τον οποίο ασχολείται η ανθρωπότητα από τη γέννησή της ως τις μέρες μας: τον έρωτα.
Τα 270 γλυπτά, ανάγλυφα, αγγεία, ειδώλια, λυχνάρια, κοσμήματα- ορισμένα με υπογραφές διάσημων γλυπτών και αγγειογράφων της αρχαιότητας – που προέρχονται από 46 αρχαιολογικά μουσεία της Ελλάδας, της Κύπρου, της Ιταλίας και της Γαλλίας (μεταξύ άλλων και του Λούβρου) θα αποκαλύψουν τις αμέτρητες όψεις του από τον 6ο αι. π.Χ. έως τον 4ο αι. μ.Χ. μέσα από εννέα ενότητες (επιμέλεια: καθηγητής Νίκος Σταμπολίδης και Γιώργος Τασούλας).

Papoulias Inaugurates OSCE Meeting

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias inaugurated yesterday the 17th Ministerial Council of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), taking place in Athens (1-2/12).
Papoulias welcomed delegates from the OSCE’ s 56 member states and described the international meeting as “an important political event and an opportunity to strengthen peaceful cooperation and promote the common goals of the member states, in order to reach tangible and substantive conclusions.”

Papandreou’ s Address

The Corfu Process needs to be taken a step further in order to meet the challenges to European security in the 21st century, OSCE chairman-in-office, Greece’s Prime minister and Foreign minister George Papandreou stressed, addressing the first plenary session of the organisation’s 17th ministerial council.
“We have to agree on important decisions in the next two days to strengthen co-operative security across the OSCE area, to shape the work of our organization, and to create a strong foundation for Kazakhstan to build upon as it assumes the OSCE Chairmanship on January 1,” Papandreou said.
He also expressed his hope that a constructive spirit will prevail during the two-day deliberations of the meeting.

Sideline Meetings

On the sidelines of the OSCE ministerial council, Papandreou met with the foreign ministers of Finland, Alexander Stubb and Kazakhstan, Kanat Saudabayev, who together form the current OSCE “troika.”
Alternate foreign minister Dimitris Droutsas had a meeting with FYROM’s FM Antonio Milososki while the premier is scheduled to meet today with the foreign ministers of Russia and Turkey, Sergei Lavrov and Ahmet Davutoglou respectively.
At the end of the first day of meetings, the Greek OSCE chairmanship hosted a formal reception for the visiting diplomatic delegations at the Acropolis Museum.

Cavafy Museum Soon in Athens

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) In less than one year and a half, Athens will boast its own C. P. Cavafy Museum at the tourist Plaka district.The Ministry of Culture has ceded a neoclassical building, which served as the residence of mid-19th-century political leader Ioannis Kolettis.Hellenic Postbank will financially support the endeavour of restoring and remodelling the premises.The museum’s exhibits and material will be based on Thessaloniki University Cavafologist, Professor George Savidis’ (1929-1995) archive. The museum’s establishment and operation will be overseen by the Centre for Neo-Hellenic Studies.The archive of Constantine P. Cavafy was passed over to Alekos Singhopoulos upon the poet’s will the year of his demise (1933).Singhopoulos maintained the archive until 1969, when he sold it to Professor George Savidis.The unusual care with which Cavafy treated Singhopoulos, along with their resemblance, led to the assumption that Singhopoulos might have been the poet’s son. According to another assumption, Singhopoulos was the illegitimate child of the poet’s brother.

500.000 Visitors at the Acropolis Museum

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) According to the Ministry of Culture, the latest numbers show that within the first two months of its operation (June 21-August 26), the new Acropolis Museum has so far attracted more than 500, 000 visitors, 60% of whom were foreigners.  Meanwhile, within the same timeframe, 409,000 users from 180 countries accessed the Museum’s webpage. As of September, the Museum launches its educational programmes destined to both pupils and teachers.  The opening of the Museum as well as its first days of operation, together with background information on the campaign for the restitution of the Parthenon Marbles received extensive coverage by foreign media.

During the opening, 440 reporters representing 167 media from 36 countries visited Athens to cover the event. (GREEK NEWS AGENDA) Having won a place on the fourth plinth in the north west of Trafalgar Square, as part of the “One & Other Project,” nineteen year-old Sofka Smales decided to dedicate her time and space to promote the cause of the restitution of the Parthenon Marbles.  On September 12, she stood on the plinth and explained why she thought that the cause was worthy. “I have always felt that the Parthenon Marbles should rightly be returned to their country of origin. The right for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece is highlighted in an article in France’s Le Monde newspaper (Le Parthénon mérite ses marbres) by author and honourary professor of Sorbonne University, Henri Godard who calls on the Louvre Museum to set a “good example”, by being the first to return to Greece pieces of the ancient monument, the Acropolis.  In his article, Godard maintains that the construction of the New Acropolis Museum weakens every argument of the past concerning those who refuse to return pieces, which have been removed from the Parthenon.   Voice of America: French Calling for Parthenon Marbles

                                     Tribute to Ianis Xenakis

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) The National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) in association with the Center for Music Composition & Performance (CMCP) is organizing a second series of events in tribute to the composer Ianis Xenakis.
The events are taking place from September 15 to October 11.

“Itinerary to Mount Athos, 1928-1930”

The exhibition “Itinerary to Mount Athos, 1928-1930” features a selection from the 400 photographs taken by Swiss photographer Frédéric Boissonnas during his travels to Mount Athos in 1928 and 1930.
The exhibition is organised by the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, in Sofia and runs from September 16 through October 25.

The Spaghetti Western Orchestra @ Badminton Theatre

Armed with over 100 instruments the Spaghetti Western Orchestra is performing in Athens the stunning music Ennio Morricone wrote for movies such as “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” “For a Few Dollars More” and “Once Upon a Time in the West.” At the Badminton Theatre from September 16 to 25.

Children’s Corner at Cycladic Art Museum

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   Starting from October, the Cycladic art Museum runs a recreational education programme for children, every week until May 2010. On Saturday mornings, young museum educators assisted by curators organise handcraft, painting and story-telling workshops drawing inspiration from the museum’s exhibits. Families may enjoy a guided tour of the museum while children participate in activities. The museum plans to enrich its programme with more happenings.  Founded in 1986, the Museum of Cycladic Art is dedicated to the study and promotion of ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus, with special emphasis on Cycladic Art of the 3rd millennium BC. Apart from the permanent exhibitions, the museum hosts temporary displays focusing on modern art, thus exploring links between ancient cultures and modern artistic creation.

The New Acropolis Museum at the World Media

The Acropolis Museum, designed by architect Bernard Tchumi with Michael Photiadis and their associates, has been constructed to exhibit the unique finds and architectural sculptures of the Acropolis of Athens.  Its official inauguration took place on June 20, 2009 and was attended by Heads of States and Governments, Ministers and other officials from around the world. The Secretariat General of Communication – Secretariat General of Information operated the Press Center for the official inauguration from June 17 through June 20 and facilitated more than 400 journalists and photographers, representing95 Greek and 167 foreign Media.  The Acropolis Museum has a total area of 25,000 square meters, with exhibition space of over 14,000 square meters, ten times more than that of the old museum on the Hill of the Acropolis offering all the amenities expected in an international museum of the 21st century. The admission price for the museum has been set at one euro throughout 2009, while from 2010 the admission price will rise to 5 euros.  According to Culture Minister Antonis Samaras, the new Acropolis Museum received 90,000 visitors in the first seven days since its official inauguration on June 20. The average number of tickets for the e-ticketing section for the first five days reached 11,000, while visits to the museum’s website exceeded 260,000 from the Americas to Nepal and Mongolia.

The “Nautilus Museum” located in the Edipsos region of Northern Evia features shells, fossils, rocks and other sea findings from around the region, acquired with care and great effort over the last 40 years.  The museum is open all year round ready to introduce visitors to some of the beauty and magic that the seas of the world are blessed with. Visitors have to opportunity to discover the many elements in the sea, whose properties have been studied by scientists and then applied to architecture, medicine, shipbuilding, engineering, textile industry and more, like the “brandaris” seashell, part of the murex family, which was the first medical tool (a dropper) used by Hippocrates.
