Diamandouros re-elected EU Ombudsman

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) The European Parliament (EP) re-elected Nikiforos Diamandouros as European Ombudsman with 340 votes out of a total of 648 valid votes cast.
Diamandouros was first elected to the post on April 1, 2003 and this will be his third term as European Ombudsman.
“I am very grateful for the support of the European Parliament and for this vote of confidence in my work.
I look forward to continuing my efforts to improve the quality of the EU administration and to promote a culture of service in the EU institutions for the benefit of European citizens”said Diamandouros, who was the first to hold the post of National Ombudsman in Greece.

Better Late Than Never

Nisyros(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   Kathimerini daily hosts a news item on the story of a British woman who received a postcard from the Greek island of Nisyros, 22 years after her niece had mailed the postcard, during a trip to the Dodecanese. “Wendy Bosworth said she was astounded when the postcard, slightly scuffed and enclosed in a sealed bag, dropped onto her doormat earlier this week.  The postcard said how the island was not affected by tourism and how the sea was beautiful and the people were very friendly, said the retired bookkeeper. She added that her niece, now a government official working in Uganda, had been amazed on hearing the news. She said, I wondered why you never said thank you, Bosworth quipped.”

Athens: International Broadband Convergence

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis opened a two-day international conference on “Broadband Convergence in Telecommunications and Media” yesterday, organised by the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT). The aim of the conference is to highlight the significance of convergence as a means for social, economic and cultural development. Addressing the conference, the PM outlined the government’s strategy for expanding the use of broadband, citing, among others, a major project for developing new generation optical fibres, budgeted at €2.1 billion, and hundreds of smaller projects currently in progress for the spread of broadband use. EETT: Programme of the 4th International Conference on Broadband
