Słynny wrak z Antykithiry w Muzeum Archeologicznym w Atenach (6/4/2012 – 28/4/2013)

Niemal wszystkie zabytkowe przedmioty, które wyciągnięto ze słynnego wraku z Antykithiry (378 obiektów) w okresie 1900-1901 oraz 1976 prezentowane są po raz pierwszy na nowej, czasowej wystawie Narodowego Muzeum Archeologicznego w Atenach (otwarcie wystawy 6 kwietnia 2012, czynna do 28 kwietnia 2013 ).
Stary wrak namierzyła w roku 1900 grupa poławiaczy gąbek z wyspy Symi, którzy podjęli się wydobycia ładunku ze statku w rok później przy pomocy okrętów Królewskiej Marynarki Wojennej, zaś druga faza prac miała miejsce w 1976 r. Podczas wydobywania wraku z głębiny w pracach uczestniczyła grupa archeologiczna przy wsparciu Calypso – oceanograficznego statku Jacquesa Cousteau.
Pieczę nad wystawą sprawuje dyrektor Muzeum, Nikos Kalcas. 
Eksponaty podzielono na użytek wystawy na cztery grupy. Pierwsza z nich to „Tło historyczne wydobycia wraku – u zarania archeologii morskiej”. Obejmuje ona chronologię prac wydobywczych i konserwacji pierwszych cennych znalezisk, takich jak państwowe dokumenty oraz ówczesne publikacje prasowe, związane z tematem. W drugiej grupie, zatytułowanej: „Statek, późniejszy wrak – jego wielkość, załoga i pasażerowie” przedstawiane są szczątki ładowni z ołowianą powłoką zewnętrzną i innymi elementami jej wyposażenia (system odprowadzania wody z ładowni, urządzenia pomiarowe- mierniki głębokości i in.). Jak wynika z zachowanych szczątków – ale też ładunku- wrak był statkiem handlowym (gr. olkas, łac. navis oneraria), o szacunkowej nośności 300 ton.

12th Symi Symposium: Progressive Governance

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)  The 12th annual Symi Symposium is taking place on the island of Skiathos on July 12-16. Held under the aegis of the Andreas Papandreou Foundation, the Symi symposia bring together leading academics, entrepreneurs, politicians, religious leaders, diplomats, scientists, and activists to develop progressive policy solutions to global challenges. The first such symposium was held in 1998 on the island of Symi, which has lent its name to the event ever since. This year’s theme is ‘Putting People First – Progressive Governance for a Green Economy and a Just Society’. The aim is to explore the steps required to lay the foundations for stable economic growth, environmental protection and social cohesion.  This year’s invited participants include Columbia University Business School professor and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences (2001), Joseph Stiglitz, French Socialist Party’s former presidential candidate Segolene Royal, World Bank Vice President and Greenpeace International Executive Director, Gerd Leipold.

Symi Festival

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   The Symi Festival one of the well – known festivities in Greece will take place on Symi island from July 26 to     September 6. Following a 13-year tradition, the festival has become a focal point for culture and creativity. Classical and modern music concerts, dance, theatre, cinema, literature evenings and conferences along with several additional happenings have turned the festival into a major popular summer event that attracts many famous artists and visitors.  This year, the festival’s programme includes, inter alia, an interesting two-day event dedicated to peace, organized by the municipality of Symi and the Municipality of Datca (Turkey) on September 1 -2.

Greek Islands: Symi

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)      The island of Symi (www.symi.gr) belongs to the group of  Dodecanese islands. Though stylish and cosmopolitan, it has managed to remain simple and unspoiled. No modern concrete construction, no high-rise hotels, no villa complexes. Few other islands have Symi’s crisp brightness and its amphitheatre of imposing neo-classical mansions, in traditional shades, stacked one on top of the other up the barren hillside. Sporting the rugged charm of its dry landscape and its breathtaking harbour Gialos, this small, beautiful island has experienced tourism, embraced it, and absorbed it, without letting it harm its charm.
