“The Balkans – Europe goes South-East” (Warsaw, 2-4, 8/12/2011) – Film “Reverse” of the Greek director George Grigorakis

The Press Office of the Greek Embassy in Warsaw invites to
“The Balkans – Europe goes South-East”, a week of events focusing on South-Eastern Europe.
Musical performances, films, literature and a conference on politics, 
organised by the Embassies and Cultural Institutes of the Balkan countries and Austria, among them, also, the Press Office of the Greek Embassy.
As the accession treaty with Croatia will be signed during the last days of the Polish EU Presidency, the events aim to show what South Eastern Europe has to offer.

On Saturday, 3rd December, at 5 pm, during the screening of short films from South-East Europe, the film “Reverse” of Greek director George Grigorakis (2010, 19 min., feature) will be projected in Klub Powiekszenie (ul. Nowy Swiat 27).
The film, a production of the Sarajevo Film Festival, has been distinguished with two awards in the Drama Festival.
The plot:
Marco wants to teach his son how to protect himself, while his son wants his Mom back. His lover wants to protect herself and her son, Adis, knows how to do it! Marco is caught in a situation, where he is unable to protect himself or his son. Words and actions work in reverse.

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) The meeting of heads of state and government in the European Council began yesterday and concludes today (October 29-30). Prime Minister George Papandreou (first from the left) participates in the two-day meeting, the agenda of which is dominated by deliberations on climate change ahead of the Copenhagen meeting, and the European Union’s institutional future under the new Treaty of Lisbon.

Breaking the Ice

Yesterday, on the sidelines of the EU Council, Papandreou held a 20-minute informal meeting with Nikola Gruevski, the Prime Minister of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.Papandreou reiterated his personal initiative to promote the Western Balkan states’ accession to the European Union by 2014, stressing that a mutually accepted name erga omnes is a prerequisite for Greece in the case of FYROM.

Socialist Call for Green Growth

Addressing a meeting of the EU Socialist Prime Ministers -Party of European Socialists (PES)- ahead of the European Council Meeting, Papandreou spoke of the need for EU Socialist Parties to push through changes that would put the citizen first and secure that the Copenhagen meeting’s resolution consolidates green growth.

Greek Presidency in the Western European Union

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   Greece will assume the Presidency of the Western European Union (WEU) for the second semester of 2009, and the Foreign Ministry presented the main priorities of the Presidency on June 3, regarding budget, institutions and the future of the WEU. Speaking in WEU Parliamentary Assembly, Secretary General for European Affairs of the foreign ministry Dimitris Katsoudas mentioned the major challenges that Europe faces this period in many sectors, and stressed the leading role of Greece in combating piracy and supporting the European perspective of Western Balkan counties. The Western European Union was established on the basis of the Treaty of Brussels in 1948.

Greece: 30 Years in EU

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)    May 28, 1979 was an historic day for Greece, as it was the day Greece’s accession treaty to the European Union was signed.  30 years have elapsed since, and to commemorate the landmark date, a ceremony took place yesterday at the Zappeion Hall, the same venue where the inaugural treaty was signed.    To honour the event, a special guest who had attended the historic signing, attended the celebration yesterday: Former French President and European Convention on the Future of Europe President Valery Giscard D’Estaing (see photo, on the left) was an ardent supporter of the European vision and a close friend of then Prime Minister Konstantinos  Karamanlis, who also shared his vision of a united Europe.  During these thirty years of Greek-European relations, adherence to the European institutions has been unequivocally endorsed by both the political elite and the people.  Despite conflicting interests among member states, Greece enters the European dialogue with a clear pro-European, pro-integrationist frame of mind.  It has already backed cooperation within the EU and has expressed its support for the Lisbon Treaty, a closer cooperation in the Common Foreign and Security Policy and future enlargement towards the Balkans.

European Council Convenes

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   The European Council opened its two-day proceedings in Brussels yesterday, December 11, with the participation of the heads of state and government of the European Union member states. During the European People’s Party (EPP) Summit, convened to focus on global financial crisis, Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis emphasised on Thursday that the European economy is faced with a slowdown that entails consequences for all countries. In statements made after the meeting, he pointed out that a collective response is necessary through the coordination of national strategies and interventions, adding that the priority is to help the most vulnerable social groups and preserve a developmental momentum as much as possible while protecting jobs. The main issues on the Council’s agenda include the financial and economic crisis, EU energy and climate change policy, the Common Agricultural Policy, the Lisbon Treaty, external relations and the European Security and Defence Policy. Ministry of Foreign Affairs: European Council December Summit (Brussels, 11-12 Dec. 2008)

Karamanlis Backs Lisbon Treaty

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)  Efforts to ratify the Lisbon Treaty should not be abandoned but remain “on schedule,” even in the face of recent setbacks like the “no” vote in the Irish referendum, Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis stressed at a press conference after the end of the European Council meeting in Brussels on Friday. The premier also conceded that failure to ratify the treaty would effectively stall the expansion process, raising obstacles in the path of Turkey and western Balkan states wishing to join the European Union, but appeared confident that the problem would be resolved eventually.
