Για 6^η συνεχή χρονιά το Φεστιβάλ Αιγαίου υποδέχεται τους φίλους της τέχνης στο ιστορικό θέατρο «Απόλλων» της Σύρου και σε πείσμα των δύσκολων καιρών, παρουσιάζει, φέτος, ένα δυνατό πρόγραμμα, με διεθνή ακτινοβολία και τη συμμετοχή καταξιωμένων καλλιτεχνών από όλο τον κόσμο.
Το Φεστιβάλ ανοίγει αυλαία στις 14 Ιουλίου με μια εντυπωσιακή παραγωγή της όπερας Κάρμεν του Μπιζέ, η οποία πραγματοποιείται σε συνεργασία με την Εθνική Λυρική Σκηνή. Διάσημοι σολίστ και πολυάριθμοι συντελεστές από τις μεγαλύτερες λυρικές σκηνές του κόσμου συναντιούνται στη Σύρο και συμπράττουν για την πραγματοποίηση της απαιτητικής αυτής παραγωγής.
Στις 15 και 17 Ιουλίου, ο ζωντανός θρύλος του κλαρινέτου Στάνλι Ντράκερ -ο επί 60 συνεχή έτη πρώτος κλαρινετίστας της διάσημης αμερικανικής ορχήστρας New York Philharmonic- και η Ναόμι Ντράκερ, συμπράττουν ως σολίστ με την ορχήστρα  Pan-European Philharmonia στο κοντσερτίνο για κλαρινέτο του Weber και στο κοντσέρτο για δύο κλαρινέτα του Krommer, υπό τη διεύθυνση του Πήτερ Τιμπόρις. Στο δεύτερο μέρος  της συναυλίας ο προσκεκλημένος μαέστρος Φράνσις Μπαρντό θα διευθύνει το Ρέκβιεμ του , με τη συμμετοχή εννιά χορωδιακών συνόλων από την Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό . Σολίστ στο Ρέκβιεμ του Fauré θα είναι η σοπράνο Ιλάνα Λαπαλάινεν και ο μπάσος βαρύτονος Ρέντα Ελ Βακίλ.
Στις 21 Ιουλίου, η κορυφαία ερμηνεύτρια, Μαρία Φαραντούρη, μας παρασύρει με τη φωνή της σ’ ένα μαγικό μουσικό ταξίδι ερμηνεύοντας μελοποιημένη ποίηση, έργα νεότερων Ελλήνων συνθετών, αλλά και ξένα τραγούδια από το παγκόσμιο ρεπερτόριο. Τη συνοδεύει στο πιάνο η Ιρίνα Βαλεντίνοβα.
Μετά την περσινή επιτυχία, ο χορογράφος Ρενάτο Τσαννέλα επιστρέφει στη Σύρο, υπογράφοντας ένα φαντασμαγορικό Γκαλά Χορού με τίτλο Μύθος και Πάθος στο οποίο συμμετέχουν τα μεγαλύτερα αστέρια του μπαλέτου από τα κορυφαία θέατρα της Ευρώπης, αλλά και Έλληνες σολίστ. Για τρεις παραστάσεις, στις 23, 24 και 25 Ιουλίου, οι πρώτοι χορευτές και σολίστ από το Μπαλέτο της Όπερας της Βιέννης, το Μπαλέτο του Βερολίνου, το Εθνικό Μπαλέτο της Αγγλίας και το Μπαλέτο της Εθνικής Λυρικής Σκηνής θα ερμηνεύσουν αποσπάσματα από έργα των  Roland Petit, Roland Savkovic, Marius Petipa, Kenneth McMillan και Renato Zanella σε μουσική Adam, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Brian Eno, Massenet, κ.α.
Επίσης, για πρώτη χρονιά, στο πλαίσιο του Φεστιβάλ Αιγαίου, οι διοργανωτές προχωρούν στη δημιουργία ενός νέου, σημαντικού θεσμού υπό τον τίτλο Greek Opera Studio. Πρόκειται για ένα θερινό εκπαιδευτικό πρόγραμμα φωνητικής που απευθύνεται σε επαγγελματίες, αλλά και σε προχωρημένους σπουδαστές όπερας από πανεπιστήμια και ακαδημίες του κόσμου. Στο πλαίσιο του Greek Opera Studio θα παραδίδονται ιδιαίτερα μαθήματα φωνητικής, μαθήματα καθοδήγησης στη σκηνική παρουσία και στην κινησιολογία, καθώς και προετοιμασία στην γλώσσα της εκάστοτε όπερας. Οι νεαροί καλλιτέχνες που θα λάβουν μέρος αυτή τη σαιζόν, θα καλύψουν σολιστικούς ρόλους της Κάρμεν υπό τη καθοδήγηση και τη διδασκαλία του μαέστρου και καλλιτεχνικού διευθυντή της “Virginia Opera”, Πήτερ Μαρκ, ενώ ταυτόχρονα θα έχουν τη δυνατότητα συμμετέχουν στη χορωδία που θα τραγουδήσει στην παραγωγή της Κάρμεν. Στις 20 Ιουλίου οι σπουδαστές του Greek Opera Studio θα παρουσιάσουν ένα Γκαλά Όπερας  με αποσπάσματα και άριες από την Κάρμεν. Το Greek Opera Studio, ιδρύτρια του οποίου είναι η σοπράνο Ιλάνα Λαπαλάινεν, θα παρέχει στους νέους καλλιτέχνες πολύτιμες γνώσεις που θα τους βοηθήσουν να καλλιεργήσουν τις μουσικές τους δεξιότητες και θα αποτελέσουν σημαντικές βάσεις για την μελλοντική επαγγελματική τους σταδιοδρομία.
Τέλος, το Φεστιβάλ, φέτος εγκαινιάζει σειρά απογευματινών συναυλιών, με ελεύθερη είσοδο, στον Ορθόδοξο Ναό του Αγίου Νικολάου, όπου χορωδιακά σύνολα θα παρουσιάζουν θρησκευτικά έργα φωνητικής μουσικής.

PM George Papandreou`s profile in the New York Times

Suzanne Daley, a journalist for the New York Times, wrote an extensive profile of George Papandreou entitled Greek Leader Finds Balm for Deficit: Straight Talk. 
Published on June 15th, the piece describes how honesty about the state of the economy and transparency into government activities have become the most important tools in confronting the sovereign debt crisis- and the hallmarks of the Papandreou administration.

Meeting with Obama

Prime Minister George Papandreou met with US President Barack Obama in Washington yesterday.
After the meeting Papandreou said that the US is willing to work with the European Union to regulate the international financial system so speculators cannot target countries with troubled economies.
The premier said  that the issue of speculation will be discussed at the G20 summit in Canada, in June. The two leaders also discussed foreign policy issues such as the Cyprus issue, the integration of Western Balkans into Euro-Atlantic institutions, as well as Greece’s relations with Turkey.

Visa Waiver

Furthermore, the US side announced that Greece will be included in the ‘visa waiver’ programme, thus enabling Greek citizens to travel to the US without a visa.
Papandreou termed the visa waiver “a vote of confidence” to Greece and noted that the Greek government is determined to respond to its obligations and cooperate closely at international level on the tackling of terrorism.

Papandreou’s Op-ed

In an op-ed published in the International Herald Tribune (IHT), Papandreou notes that the Greek case is not an outlier, but one more flare-up in a broken system of financial regulation and predatory behaviour.
“If global economic growth is to be sustainable, we need better coordination and greater solidarity between nations… We must now establish and enforce clear rules to contain the inordinate power of markets over our national economies and our common currency – not for Greece’s sake, but for Europe’s,” he stresses.

El Greco Paintings on display in New York

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) The Onassis Cultural Centre in New York presents an extraordinary group of 15th and 16th century paintings, including early works by El Greco.
Under the title “The Origins of El Greco” the exhibition features 46 exceptional works from public and private collections in Greece, Europe, the United States and Canada, many of which have travelled to the U.S. for the first time.
Tracing the cross-currents of Byzantine and Renaissance influences in the workshops of 15th and 16th century Crete the show is the first to focus on the evolution of the multifaceted relationship of Cretan painters with Western art during this rich period.
The exhibition will run until February 27, 2010 and will be officially inaugurated on December 8, by Culture and Tourism Minister Pavlos Geroulanos and the Archbishop of Crete, Irineos.

Greek Photo-Art Travels to New York

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)  Myrto Papadopoulos and Sirio Magnabosco – winners of the Cedefop/Thessaloniki Photomuseum awards for 2007 and 2008- are representing the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography at the New York Photo Festival which takes place in Brooklyn N.Y., from May 13 to 17.

Ancient Athens on 5 Drachmas a Day

New book: Philip Matyszak, a British non-fiction writer, with a doctorate in Roman history from St John’s College, Oxford has published an entertaining guidebook entitled “Athens on 5 drachmas a day”. The book takes us on a travel back in time, to 431 BC Athens, giving the reader a vibrant sense of what everyday life must have been like in the ancient city during the pinnacle of its glory.

Greek Life Insurance Policy Programme from “New York Life Insurance Company”

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   The New York Life Insurance Company began selling life insurance policies in the Ottoman Empire in 1882. In connection with turmoil caused by the outbreak of World War I, however, New York Life stopped selling policies in Europe and in the Ottoman Empire after 1914. Various reference works and other sources indicate that many persons of Greek ancestry living in the Ottoman Empire at the outbreak of World War I were displaced or perished between 1915 and 1923. The company searched its records to locate all policies issued in the Ottoman Empire before 1915 insuring those of Greek heritage. New York Life paid benefits on many of those policies. However, it received no claims and thus paid no benefits or cash value on some of those policies, referred to as the “Greek Policies.”
In order to encourage claims upon the Greek Policies, New York Life has established the Greek Life Insurance Policy Programme. Descendants of persons insured under the Greek Policies may submit claims for benefits at: www.greekinsuranceclaims.com/en/board.php3
In order to be considered, the claim form and copies of all supporting documents must be mailed or e-mailed to the Claim Board by February 28, 2009.
