Events during the European Football Championship – Participation of the Press Office

On the occasion of the European Football Championship “EURO 2012”, organized in Poland and Ukraine from 8th June until 1st July, the Press Office participated in several events.  

• “Cultural Week of Greeks in Poland” (Warsaw. 2-8 June 2012) 
  The events, that took place at “Galleria Freta” in the historical center of Warsaw, were organized by the musician of Greek origin Milo Kurtis and under the auspices of the Greek Embassy in Warsaw.
  They included concerts, exhibitions of paintings, sculptures and photographs, films, classes of Greek dances, a theater performance, a debate on Greece`s current affairs, gastronomy etc.
  Several musicians, such as Milo Kurtis and “Naxos Quintet”, Kostas Georgiadis and the group “Edesea”, Apostolis Anthimos, Jorgos Skolias and “Sefardic Trio”, Maja Sikorowska, the group ‘Olympus’, several artists, such as the sculptor Christos Mandzios, the painter Michalis Chrisoulidis and the photographer Kostas Kawardzis, the film director Athena Savidis, the journalist Dionysios Sturis, the philosopher and musician Ilias Vrazas, the byzantine choir of the orthodox church of St. Mary Magdalene in Warsaw, were among those who have performed during the cultural week. 
• Greek Embassy`s event in honour of the Greek National Football Team (Warsaw, 9 June 2012) 
  Representatives of business, academic and artistic sectors of Greeks in Poland, Polish academics, journalists and representatives of Polish authorities, Greek journalists covering the participation of the Greek football team in “Euro 2012”, the General Secretary of Sports, Panos Bitsaxis, were among the participants. 
• Celebrations of Legionowo City hosting the Greek National Football Team (Legionowo, 2 June 2012)
  A ceremony during which the official city-keys of Legionowo were handed over to the charge d`affaires of the Greek Embassy, Stavros Spyridakis. 
• Polish Railways’ promotion of European countries during the Football Championship and for six months afterwards (May – December 2012)
  For the promotion of the European Football Championship in 20 trains, Polish Railways have painted 16 of them in the colours of European countries` flags. On the 19th of May there was a parade of 5 trains painted with the colours of Greek, Polish, Ukrainian, Czech and Russian flags on a central bridge of  Warsaw. 
  The Press Office collaborated with representatives of the Polish Railways (PKP) in order to present the Greek flag on a Polish train. 
• “Fan`s Dictionary” for the volunteers` communication during the European Football Championship
  The dictionary includes common phrases in major European languages and was issued in cooperation with the UEFA, the EUNIC Cluster Warsaw (EU National Institutes for Culture) and the French Institute in Warsaw. The Press Office translated the leaflet into Greek language. 

Tribute to poet Odysseus Elytis

On November 2, 2011 Greece commemorates the 100th anniversary since the birth of poet laureate Odysseus Elytis. To mark the centenary of his birth, 2011 has been designated as Elytis Year by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Odysseus Elytis was born in Heraklion, Crete on November 2, 1911 and died in Athens on March 18, 1996.
A major poet in Greek language, Elytis is also one of the outstanding international figures of 20th-century poetry. Elytis’ poetry has marked, through an active presence of over forty years, a broad spectrum of subjects with a rarefied and passionate stylistic touch. The first collections of poetry (Orientations, 1939, and Sun the First, 1943) are joyous and radiant, celebrating the Greek landscape as an ideal world of sensual enjoyment and moral purity.
His experience of the war in 1940s marks a departure from the sunny atmosphere of his early youth and poetry, colouring his long poem Heroic and Elegiac Song for the Lost Second Lieutenant of Albania (1943). The attempt of Elytis to identify himself with the nation and speak for himself and also for his country reaches its peak with Axion Esti (‘Worthy It Is,’ 1959), his central and most ambitious work for which he was awarded the 1979 Nobel Prize for Literature.
His experience of the war in 1940s marks a departure from the sunny atmosphere of his early youth and poetry, colouring his long poem Heroic and Elegiac Song for the Lost Second Lieutenant of Albania (1943). Centenary Celebrations
The Athens Concert Hall is paying tribute to Odysseus Elytis by holding a two-day (October 31 to November 1) international conference titled Odysseus Elytis: The 20th century in the poetry of Elytis. The poetry of Elytis in the 21st century, exploring new approaches in the interpretation of his work.
On November 2 and 3, there will be an event of original music by George Kouroupos under the title Odysseus Elytis’ This Small, this Great World!, with poetry and prose set to music, representing the main facets of the work of Odysseus Elytis: lyricism, a restless spirit of inquiry, courage, spirituality, sensation and true emotions.

Festival of Greek Culture in Tarnowskie Gory (Silesia) 11-28 May 2010

A festival of Greek Culture is taking place in Tarnowskie Gory of Silesia region (southern Poland) from the 11th till the 28th May. The 13th edition of the festival, organized by the Cultural Centre of Tarnowskie Gory, is under the auspices of the Greek Embassy in Warsaw and has been realised with the cooperation of the Press Office.
Various aspects of Greek culture are promoted during the festival, which includes a rich programme of events of high quality, such as lectures, music, cinema, theatre, performances, concerts, dance, discussion-panels, painting, cuisine. Many Greeks that live in Poland and work successfully in various fields (artistic, scientific or economic), participate in this festival, presenting the results of their efforts.
At the official opening of the festival on the 14th May, a message by the Greek Ambassador, Gabriel Coptsidis, who praised the great interest of cultural institutions towards Greece and the high level of their knowledge about Greek history and culture, was read. The Press Attache, Maria Mondelou, has hold a speech, stressing the importance of cultural events dedicated to Greece that are successfully organised in Poland.

Tarnogórskie Makaty, w tym roku poświęcone będą w całości Grecji, a zwłaszcza spuściźnie kulturowej starożytnej Grecji, jak i dorobkowi w tej sferze współczesnego państwa greckiego. Imprezy w ramach XIII Tarnogórskich Makat odbędą się w dniach od 11 do 28 maja. Poprzednie edycje festiwalu poświęcone były m.in. kulturze: Japonii, Litwy, Czech, Węgier i Izraela. Głównym celem wydarzenia jest przybliżenie mieszkańcom naszego miasta i nie tylko, dziedzictwa innych kultur.
Tegoroczny program imprezy zapowiada się bardzo ciekawie. Serdecznie zapraszamy do udziału.

Πολωνική ζωγραφική στο Μουσείο Φρυσίρα

"Η γυναίκα με γάντι" του πολωνού ζωγράφου Γκρ. Βνιεκ

Το Μουσείο Φρυσίρα στο κτίριο της Μονής Αστερίου 3 στην Πλάκα έχει κερδίσει μέσα στα χρόνια τον ρόλο του Ιδρύματος όπου μπορείς να δεις συστηματικά σύγχρονη παραστατική ζωγραφική.
Από τις 14 Απριλίου στη γνωστή εκθεσιακή σειρά του «Το βλέμμα του ζωγράφου» κεντρικό πρόσωπο είναι ο Πολωνός ζωγράφος Γκρέγκορ Βνιεκ. Εκτός από την παρουσίαση της ζωγραφικής του ο εικαστικός, εκπρόσωπος της ομάδας νέων αναπαραστατικών ζωγράφων από την Κρακοβία, έχει επιλέξει να δείξει και 70 έργα συναδέλφων του από τη συλλογή του Μουσείου Φρυσίρα. Στους εκθεσιακούς χώρους φιλοξενούνται, μαζί με τα δικά του έργα, συνολικά 150 πίνακες. Συνεκτικό στοιχείο όλων είναι η χωρίς ενοχές και συμπλέγματα επιστροφή της ζωγραφικής στην παράδοση της αναπαράστασης. Δεν πρόκειται, όμως, για μια στείρα επιστροφή στις κατακτήσεις του παρελθόντος, αλλά για τέχνη που εμπλέκει δημιουργικά τη ζωγραφική με τις σύγχρονες καλλιτεχνικές αναζητήσεις.
Ο Γκρ. Βνιεκ ακολούθησε τη συμβουλή του σπουδαίου Γερμανού ζωγράφου Γκέρχαρντ Ρίχτερ, που θεωρούσε ζωγράφο εκείνον που μπορούσε να στηριχτεί σε μια βαθιά αγάπη για τον άνθρωπο και να τον τοποθετήσει στο επίκεντρο του εικαστικού του σύμπαντος. Σε κάθε ευκαιρία επισημαίνει το ενδιαφέρον του για την ανθρώπινη μορφή, το περιβάλλον και την ύπαρξή της. «Το θέμα είναι πολύ σημαντικό, με οδηγεί εγγύτερα στο πρωτογενές», έγραφε σε κατάλογο παλαιότερης έκθεσής του. Και πρόσθετε: «Επιλέγω θέματα με ισχυρό συναισθηματικό αντίκτυπο -αιφνίδιες ασθένειες, τυχαία περιστατικά (π.χ. η πτώση ενός δέντρου, η τοποθέτηση ενός φράχτη, κατασκευαστικά έργα), σκηνές της καθημερινότητας, της φτώχειας και της ανέχειας. Κατανοώ πως πρόκειται για δύσκολα θέματα, όμως νιώθω ταυτόχρονα πως απαιτούν άμεση δράση, εξπρεσιονιστικές φόρμες, βίαια χρώματα, δυναμικά καδραρίσματα. Αναζητώ τον δικό μου τρόπο θεώρησης του σύγχρονου ανθρώπου. Θέλω να πλησιάσω όσο γίνεται περισσότερο την αλήθεια, να πάω πέρα από τα τείχη που δεν κρύβουν τίποτα πίσω τους».
Είναι εμφανές ότι ο Πολωνός ζωγράφος δεν δίστασε ποτέ να παρουσιάσει τη δυστυχία της καθημερινότητας και ότι δεν υπέκυψε στους κανόνες της ανώδυνης διακοσμητικής τέχνης, που συνεπήρε τόσους συναδέλφους του σε όλη την Ευρώπη. Κατάφερε να διατηρήσει ζωηρό το ενδιαφέρον του για κοινωνικά και πολιτικά ζητήματα σχετικά και με τη σημασία της ιστορικής μνήμης εν μέσω των σαρωτικών αλλαγών που επήλθαν τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες στις πρώην κομμουνιστικές χώρες της Κεντρικής και Ανατολικής Ευρώπης.
Ο Γκρ. Βνιεκ δεν δυσκολεύτηκε να επιλέξει 70 και πλέον έργα συναδέλφων του από τη συλλογή του Μουσείου Φρυσίρα και να επιμεληθεί την έκθεση που παρουσιάζεται παράλληλα με τη δική του. Με τους περισσότερους από αυτούς μοιράζεται το ίδιο πάθος και παρόμοιες αναζητήσεις. Ανάμεσά τους βρίσκονται πίνακες των Αντρέα Μαρτινέλι, Ζαν Ρουστέν, Πίτερ Μπλέικ, Κλάιβ Σμιθ, Απόστολου Γεωργίου, Κρίστοφερ Λεμπρούν, Αλέξη Βερούκα, Πάουλα Ρέγκο, Βικτόρια Ράσελ, Μπραν Ρενό, Δημήτρη Τζαμουράνη κ.ά.
«Οι καλλιτέχνες που επέλεξα είναι καλλιτέχνες για τους οποίους το μάτι και η εξαντλητική παρατήρηση του χώρου και της μορφής έχουν καίρια σημασία. Συνηθίζουμε να αναφερόμαστε στο μάτι ή και στο χέρι του ζωγράφου, όμως υπάρχει επίσης και η διάνοιά του η οποία ενεργοποιεί την καλλιτεχνική δημιουργία», σημειώνει ο Γκρ. Βνιεκ. Αναφέρεται με ενθουσιασμό στη δουλειά των συναδέλφων του. «Βαθύτατα μου κέντρισε το ενδιαφέρον ο τρόπος που ο Πίτερ Μπλέικ προσπάθησε να προσεγγίσει την ανθρώπινη μορφή ως κάτι καλυμμένο, δύσμορφο, χωρίς αναλογίες, επιλέγοντας τη φιγούρα του νάνου, παραπέμποντας στους νάνους του Βελάσκεθ αλλά και στον μυθικό κόσμο του Ζορό, του γενναίου υπερασπιστή των καταπιεσμένων που εξελίχθηκε σε σύμβολο της pop κουλτούρας».

Giorgio De Chirico Art Centre in Volos

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) The Giorgio de Chirico Art Centre is located in the centre of the city of Volos, Greece’s third-largest port city, where the famous Italian painter was born in 1888.

The Art Centre, located on a pedestrian road next to the Municipal Conservatory, is housed in a new glass building that has been named after the Surrealist painter who was the founder of the “scuola metafisica” (metaphysical school) art movement.
The ground floor, mezzanine and second floors of the Art Centre, which was inaugurated in September 1990, house the Volos Municipal Art Collection.
The latter includes more than 400 paintings, sculptures, hagiographies, ceramics, mosaics and artistic photographs, as well as periodical exhibitions, and a small library.
The other two floors house the Alexander Damtsas Museum, a permanent exhibition of the Volos-born art aficionado’s collection comprising some 500 paintings and gravures by mostly Greek artists representing all the important art styles from the late 19th century to date.

El Greco Paintings on display in New York

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) The Onassis Cultural Centre in New York presents an extraordinary group of 15th and 16th century paintings, including early works by El Greco.
Under the title “The Origins of El Greco” the exhibition features 46 exceptional works from public and private collections in Greece, Europe, the United States and Canada, many of which have travelled to the U.S. for the first time.
Tracing the cross-currents of Byzantine and Renaissance influences in the workshops of 15th and 16th century Crete the show is the first to focus on the evolution of the multifaceted relationship of Cretan painters with Western art during this rich period.
The exhibition will run until February 27, 2010 and will be officially inaugurated on December 8, by Culture and Tourism Minister Pavlos Geroulanos and the Archbishop of Crete, Irineos.
