“European Day of Languages 2012” (Warsaw, 24-29/9/2012)-Events of the Press Office (24-25 & 29/9/2012)

The Press Office of the Greek Embassy in Warsaw participates in “European Day of Languages” events, that will take place in Warsaw (24- 29 September 2012).
Various events will be open to the public, including screenings of films, such as “Diolkos – for 1.500 years” (25 September, 13.00 p.m, Russian Cultural Institute, RONIK). 
A special stand promoting Greek tourism will provide information and material at the University campus of the Old Library  on the 25th of September.
A demo-lesson of Greek language is, also, included in the programme on the 25th September.
Finally the Greek language will be promoted through the city game organised on the 29th September.
26 Cultural Institutes and Embassies of European countries, the European Commission (Representation in Poland), FRSE, the University of Warsaw, the Municipality of Warsaw, the Polish Ministries of Culture and Education take part in this year`s project.
“European Day of Languages” events include an  international conference on ”ICT and Social Media in Language Education”, city game, language picnic, theatre workshops etc..

“European Day of Languages” (24-29/9/2011) – Greek events organized by the Press Office

The Press Office of the Greek Embassy in Warsaw once again participated in “European Day of Languages 2011” events, that took place in Warsaw from 24 till 29 September and aimed to inform Poles about the cultural and linguistic heritage of European countries.

Organizers were over eighteen countries, members of EUNIC Cluster Warsaw (European Union National Institutes of Culture), among them the Press Office of the Greek Embassy, cultural institutes and embassies of European countries, as well as  other institutions such as the European Commission Representation in Poland, the European Parliament Communication Office in Poland, the Polish Foundation for the Development of the Educational System, the University of Warsaw etc.
The program (www.edj.waw.pl) consisted of demo language lessons, seminars, European film festival, theatre workshops, city game, language picnic etc.
The Greek program of the events included:
Demo lesson of Greek language, that took place in the Institute of Foreign Languages of the University of Warsaw on the 27^th of September, as part of the demo-lessons of  languages and cultures of the participating countries.
Greek info stand, which was set in the University Campus of the Old Library of the University of Warsaw and provided touristic information on the 27^th September from 9 am until 3 pm.
The film “The Trojan Women” directed by Michael Cacoyannis (1971) was shown at the Russian Cultural Institute on the 29^th September, during the film festival organized in the Russian Cultural Institute (26-29 September) and the cinema Alchemia (25^th September):
A wide range of other events were organized during the week (24-29 September): a two-day conference “Language Competences for Professional and Personal Success inEurope”, entertainment activities, theatre workshops, city games, competitions on a special website. This year`s project attracted many students and other visitors and it can be considered as a perfect opportunity to experience the Greek language and culture.

“Ακτινοβολία. Ιστορία της Μαρίας Σκλοντόφσκα-Κιουρί” στο Ίδρυμα Μιχάλης Κακογιάννης

To έργο αφηγείται την ιστορία της Maria Skłodowska Curie μέσα από τον διάλογο ανάμεσα σε δυο χαρακτήρες: την Μαρία και την μικρότερή της κόρη την Εύα. Στο έργο εισάγονται και άλλα πρόσωπα μέσα από μια σειρά μονολόγων της ηρωίδας και από φωτογραφίες που προβάλλονται στο φόντο. Στην προβολή παρουσιάζεται επίσης και το πανόραμα των βουνών που περιβάλλουν την δράση: η ταράτσα του σανατόριου στο Sancellemoz, στις γαλλικές Άλπεις το 1934, όταν η Μαρία Κιουρί πήγε για να θεραπευτεί από μια μυστηριώδη ασθένεια. Εκεί, την προσέχει η κόρη της, Εύα, που κατά την διάρκεια της διαμονής τους, παίρνει συνέντευξη από την μητέρα της, προκειμένου να γράψει ένα βιβλίο για αυτήν. Η Μαρία ξαναθυμάται τις σπουδές της, τις προσπάθειες και τους κόπους της , τα πειράματα και τις ανακαλύψεις, καθώς επίσης και τον έρωτά της με τον Pierre Curie και τον Paul Langevin και την φιλία της με τον Albert Einstein. Η ασθένειά της αποδεικνύεται  ότι  είναι αποτέλεσμα υπερέκθεσης  στην ακτινοβολία. Πεθαίνει, ενώ ονειρεύεται την επιστροφή στην Πολωνία. Στο τέλος του έργου μαθαίνουμε για την απόλυτη αναγνώριση και τις τιμές  που δέχεται η Maria Skłodowska Curie μετά θάνατον: η κηδεία της πραγματοποιήθηκε με όλες τις τιμές και το σώμα της εναποτέθηκε στο Πάνθεον του Παρισιού. 
Η παράσταση είναι μια παραγωγή του «Teatr Polski» από το Τορόντο του Καναδά. Οι ηθοποιοί Μαρία Νοβοτάρσκα και Αγκάτα Πολιτόφσκα προέρχονται από το φημισμένο θέατρο «Σλοβάτσκι» της Κρακοβίας.
 Η πρεμιέρα της «Ακτινοβολίας» έγινε το 2006 και έκτοτε το έργο έχει παιχτεί σε πολλές χώρες αποσπώντας πολύ θετικές κριτικές. Πρόκειται για μια παράσταση  με ζωντανό χαρακτήρα, έντονη συναισθηματική δράση και εξαιρετική εκπαιδευτική αξία για τους νεώτερους θεατές.
Η παράσταση παρουσιάζεται στα πολωνικά με ελληνικούς υπέρτιτλους.

Farewell to Iakovos Kambanellis

Iakovos Kambanellis, one of the most prominent figures of post-war Greek literature, died yesterday at the age of 89.

Kambanellis was born on the island of Naxos and studied design in Athens. During the Nazi occupation of Greece in WW2 he became actively involved in the Resistance movement. He was arrested by the German occupying forces in 1943 and was sent to Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp, from which he was liberated by the Allied Forces in 1945.

His legendary Mauthausen novel, which describes his experience as a concentration camp survivor, was set to music by Mikis Theodorakis and became one of the most influential works in Greek culture.

He wrote more than twenty plays and twelve film scripts, including Stella by Michael Cacoyannis and The Dragon by Nikos Koundouros. In an announcement, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism expressed deep regret for Kambanellis’ passing, noting that the deceased defined the style of post-war Greek theatre, adding that his works were deeply loved by the Greek audience, as they soberly and truthfully depicted the reality of life in Greece, its difficulties and joys.

Poems on the Underground – Greek contemporary poetry

The Press Office of the Greek Embassy in Warsaw promotes the contemporary poetry of Greece and participates to   “Poems on the Underground” events (6-30 September 2010).
“Poems on the Underground” (Wiersze w Metrze) has been inspired by other similar projects  in many cities: Dublin, Paris, New York, Barcelona, Stockholm, Stuttgard and Moscow, organised for the first time in London in 1986.
Wiersze w Metrze promotes contemporary European poetry in public city spaces, through happenings, haiku competition, poetry city game and a performing poetry festival.
Many cultural institutes and embassies participate to the project, which takes place under the auspices of the the mayor of Warsaw, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz.
Greek contemporary poetry will be represented by two acclaimed poets, Kiki Dimoula and Nasos Vagenas.
Kiki Dimoula has recently been awarded the European Literature Prize for 2010. Her poetry has been translated into English, French, German, Swedish, Danish, Spanish and many other languages.
Dimoula’s poetry is haunted by the existential dissolution of the post-world era. Her central themes are hopelessness, insecurity, absence and oblivion. Using diverse subjects and twisting grammar in unconventional ways, she accentuates the power of the words through astonishment and surprise, but always manages to retain a sense of hope.
Nasos Vagenas, professor of Theory and Critique of Literature in the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of Athens, in 2005 was awarded with the State Poetry Prize for his poetic collection ‘Stefanos’.
His poetic work includes the books: ‘Field of Mars’, ‘Biography’, ‘Roxani’s Knees’, ‘Wandering of a non-traveller’, ‘The Fall of the Flying’, ‘Barbarous Odes’ , ‘The Fall of the Flying B’, ‘Dark Ballads and Other Poems’, ‘Stefanos’.
His poetry has been translated into English, German, Italian, Dutch, Romanian, Serbian.
Two poems of Kiki Dimoula and Nasos Vagenas have been translated in polish language for “Wiersze w Metrze” by the professors and students of the Department of Greek Studies of the University of Warsaw (Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies “Artes Liberales”).

Karaghiozis: “Inextricable part of Greek Culture”

Greece is planning to press its claims to Karaghiozis, a shadow puppet theatre character that UNESCO has deemed to be part of Turkey’s cultural heritage.
“Karaghiozis is an extricable part of our culture,” Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson said, adding that UNESCO allows neighbouring countries to access the same commodity when it comes to intangible cultural heritage.
The issue has prompted an announcement by the Ministry of Culture, according to which, “it is commonly known and undoubted that shadow theatre refers to a cultural tradition which surpasses boundaries and spans through the Balkans, and the broader East, long time before the emergence of contemporary states.

Concerning the Greek version of Karaghiozis, it represents a vivid chapter of Modern Greek culture, which defends traditional values broadly cherished by the Greek people.”

Εργαστήρι αρχαίου δράματος από πολωνό σκηνοθέτη

Ενας από τους ραγδαία ανερχόμενους Πολωνούς σκηνοθέτες, ο 42χρονος Γκρέγκορ Γιαρζίνα (Grzegorz Jarzyna), έρχεται για να πραγματοποιήσει στην Κρήτη, από τις 3 έως τις 12 Ιουλίου, θεατρικό εργαστήρι.
Σπούδασε φιλοσοφία και θέατρο στην Κρακοβία. Υπήρξε μαθητής και συνεργάτης του σπουδαίου Κρίστιαν Λούπα και από το 1998 είναι καλλιτεχνικός διευθυντής τού TR Warszawa, που έχει παρουσιάσει και στην Ελλάδα παραστάσεις του με την υπογραφή του «τρομερού παιδιού» της πολωνικής σκηνής Κριστόφ Βαρλικόφσκι. Χαρακτηριστικό του καλλιτεχνικού στίγματος του Γιαρζίνα είναι ότι υπογράφει τις παραστάσεις του με διαφορετικά ψευδώνυμα για να υποδηλώνεται η διαρκής καλλιτεχνική μετατόπισή του σε νέα πεδία.
Στο εργαστήρι, όπου θα μετάσχει και ο θίασός του, σκοπεύει να επικεντρωθεί στο αρχαίο δράμα. Οι συμμετέχοντες θα δουλέψουν πάνω σε σκηνές των τριών τραγικών ποιητών μας. Το εργαστήρι εντάσσεται στο πλαίσιο των διεθνών συνεργασιών και ανταλλαγών της πρώτης Κρατικής Σκηνής με σημαντικούς φορείς του εξωτερικού. Απαιτεί όμως από τους συμμετέχοντες να καλύψουν οι ίδιοι τα έξοδα μεταφοράς, διαμονής και διατροφής. Η παρακολούθηση είναι δωρεάν. Οι ενδιαφερόμενοι ηθοποιοί πρέπει να έχουν αποστείλει, μέχρι τις 15 Ιουνίου, σύντομα βιογραφικά τους σημειώματα (στα αγγλικά) μαζί με φωτογραφία τους (στο email: interdept@n-t.gr.) Athens & Epidaurus Festival 2010

It seems that ages have gone by since Maria Callas stunned the audience by performing ‘Norma’ at the Epidaurus theatre as part of events celebrating the Greek festival in 1960. The 2010 Greek Festival, which opens today, encompasses a variety of artistic expressions.  

Its aim is to present contemporary artists from around the globe and acquaint the world public with both innovative and pervasive trends of modern artistic creations. 
The festival spans from June to mid –August with old and new venues hosting the events, such as the Herodus Attikus theatre, the Benaki Museum, and the Building H at the Peiraios 260 complex.
This year music lovers will have the opportunity to enjoy Rufus Wainwright in a one-man-show on June 5 at the Lycabettus Hill Theatre.
In the first half, he will present his newly- released album, while in the second, he will play major hits from his entire career.

Festival of Greek Culture in Tarnowskie Gory (Silesia) 11-28 May 2010

A festival of Greek Culture is taking place in Tarnowskie Gory of Silesia region (southern Poland) from the 11th till the 28th May. The 13th edition of the festival, organized by the Cultural Centre of Tarnowskie Gory, is under the auspices of the Greek Embassy in Warsaw and has been realised with the cooperation of the Press Office.
Various aspects of Greek culture are promoted during the festival, which includes a rich programme of events of high quality, such as lectures, music, cinema, theatre, performances, concerts, dance, discussion-panels, painting, cuisine. Many Greeks that live in Poland and work successfully in various fields (artistic, scientific or economic), participate in this festival, presenting the results of their efforts.
At the official opening of the festival on the 14th May, a message by the Greek Ambassador, Gabriel Coptsidis, who praised the great interest of cultural institutions towards Greece and the high level of their knowledge about Greek history and culture, was read. The Press Attache, Maria Mondelou, has hold a speech, stressing the importance of cultural events dedicated to Greece that are successfully organised in Poland.

Tarnogórskie Makaty, w tym roku poświęcone będą w całości Grecji, a zwłaszcza spuściźnie kulturowej starożytnej Grecji, jak i dorobkowi w tej sferze współczesnego państwa greckiego. Imprezy w ramach XIII Tarnogórskich Makat odbędą się w dniach od 11 do 28 maja. Poprzednie edycje festiwalu poświęcone były m.in. kulturze: Japonii, Litwy, Czech, Węgier i Izraela. Głównym celem wydarzenia jest przybliżenie mieszkańcom naszego miasta i nie tylko, dziedzictwa innych kultur.
Tegoroczny program imprezy zapowiada się bardzo ciekawie. Serdecznie zapraszamy do udziału.

Greece`s presentation by the Greek Embassy and the Press Office at the European Information Centre in Warsaw (19/3/2010)

A presentation of Greece by the Greek Embassy and the Press Office in Warsaw took place at the European Information Centre of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 19^th March 2010 (www.cie.gov.pl).
Various aspects of Greece were presented by the Deputy Head of Mission, Paraskevi Charitidou, and the Press Attache, Maria Mondelou.
The audience, 70  students of higher secondary schools of Warsaw, was informed about Greece`s geostrategic position, its political system, the participation in international organizations, such as the EU and the NATO, the Greek Presidencies in the EU.
A brief presentation of the Greek history, mainly during the modern and contemporary period, was followed by characteristic examples of Greek culture, in the fields of literature, poetry, music, theatre and cinema.
Views of the New Acropolis Museum were presented, as well as Greece`s request for the restitution of the Parthenon Marbles.
During the discussion, the students were informed about Greece`s foreign policy, the situation of the Greek economy, tourism, the educational system and the scholarships offered for foreign students. They were, also, particularly interested about the image of Poles in Greece and their life.
 The European Information Centre, that invited the Greek Embassy to make the presentation of Greece, organizes annually discussions with representatives of the EU member states.

Spotkanie z przedstawicielkami Ambasady Grecji

 19 marca 2010 r. w Centrum Informacji Europejskiej MSZ odbyło się spotkanie uczniów XL Liceum Ogólnokształcącego im. S. Żeromskiego oraz LXXV Liceum Ogólnokształcącego im. Jana III Sobieskiego w Warszawie z przedstawicielkami Ambasady Grecji. Ambasadę reprezentowały Pani Paraskevi Charitidou, zastępca szefa misji oraz Pani Maria Mondelou, Pierwszy Sekretarz w Biurze Prasowym Ambasady Grecji w Warszawie.
Prelegentki omówiły historię i system polityczny Grecji oraz aktualne działania Grecji w Unii Europejskiej. Opowiedziały również o warunkach studiowania w tym kraju i stypendiach dostępnych dla polskich studentów. Podczas prezentacji został wyświetlony krótki film o Atenach.
Po wykładzie miała miejsce dyskusja, w czasie której przedstawicielki Ambasady odpowiedziały na liczne pytania publiczności dotyczące stereotypów o Polakach, greckiej kultury, popularnych Greków, kryzysu gospodarczego, relacji z Turcją, aktualnego sporu między Grecją i Byłą Jugosłowiańską Republiką Macedonii przed Międzynarodowym Trybunałem Sprawiedliwości oraz doświadczeń czterech prezydencji Grecji w Radzie Unii Europejskiej.
W spotkaniu uczestniczyło ponad 70 osób.

Cacoyannis Foundation: A new Cultural Centre

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias and Cyprus President Demetris Christofias officially inaugurated on March 9, the “Michael Cacoyannis Foundation,” housed in an Athens downtown building.
The Foundation’s building is designed to serve as a cultural centre for performing arts and is meant to preserve Cacoyannis oeuvre for future generation.
The official inauguration is to be followed by a series of events, including a costume and photography exhibition from Cacoyannis’s work for the cinema, opera and theatre.
Cypriot-born Michael Cacoyannis is the director of world acclaimed films, among which Stella, Electra, Zorba the Greek and The Trojan Women.

Dame Helen Mirren at Epidaurus Theatre

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)  Following the instructions of Royal National Theatre’s artistic director Nicholas Hytner, Oscar-winning British actress Helen Mirren and co-star Dominic Cooper received widespread praise for Racine’s “Phedre” – based on Euripides’s play “Hippolytus”– performed on June 11 at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, as part of the Athens and Epidaurus Festival. Phèdre, recounts the story of a queen’s destructive obsession with her stepson, filtered through the eyes of a 17th century French playwright and the freewheeling translation of a British poet, Ted Hughes.  The night of the performance, the theatre was filled with admirers of both Mirren and the ancient Greek drama, with visitors coming from Greece and abroad.   Epidaurus Theatre is to host other prominent artists this summer, including British director Sam Mendes and veteran French actress Jeanne Moreau in the coming weeks.  The Times: Dame Helen Mirren is worthy of the Epidaurus   Athens and Epidaurus Festival: www.greekfestival.gr

Greek play “To Gala” at Kamienica Theatre in Warsaw

Kamienica Theatre in Warsaw presented “To Gala” (The Milk) on Thursday June 25th. The play is written by Vassilis Katsikonouris, translated and directed by Sebastian Chondrokostas, music composed by Odysseas Konstantinopoulos. “To Gala” is the first Greek contemporary theatrical performance held in Warsaw and played by polish actors. The performance -sponsored by Eurobank-EFG- was organized under the auspices of the Embassy of Greece in Poland. The play tells the story of an immigrant family relocated in Greece from Georgia, struggling between two worlds in order to make a living in the “new homeland”. A wine reception, co-hosted by the Press and Communication Office of Greece in Warsaw and Kamienica Theatre, followed the premiere.

Lost for the Greek Shadow Theater

Shadow puppet theatre master, Evgenios Spatharis passed away on May 9, at the age of 85.

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   Spatharis was taught the art of shadow theatre by his father Sotiris and began his career during the German occupation. Since then, he gave numerous performances in Greece and abroad, participating in international festivals and conferences on shadow theatre. He was member of the Artistic Chamber of Greece, of the Institute of World Theatre (Unesco). In 1991 his Shadow Theatre Museum (“Spathario”) was established. Spatharis was well-known throughout Greece for his puppet theatre stories revolving around the hunchbacked character “Karaghiozis,” who came to represent the virtues and vices of the average Greek. Shadow theatre is thought to be from China or India and arrived in Greece in the mid-15th century. The “In praise of shadows” exhibition at the Benaki Museum (23/05/2009 – 26/06/2009) focuses on shadows, based on old and contemporary folk tales and on simple narratives expressed with economy of means.  This exhibition brings together key works by 8 contemporary artists from seven different countries, and two master filmmakers from the first half of the twentieth century.  The Washington Post – Greek puppet master Evgenios Spatharis dies at 85; Greek News Agenda – Karagiozis Shadow – Theatre

Athens: Herodes Atticus Concert

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   Presenting songs from her 30-year career, Lena Platonos will perform for the first time at Athens’ Herod Atticus Theatre tonight. Youngsters who grew up listening to her songs for the popular radio show “Lilipoupoli” followed her at her next work called “Sabotage” and even at her later turn to electronic music. (GREEK NEWS AGENDA)  A year after the Greek fires halted her performance of Beckett, Fiona Shaw makes an emotional return to Epidaurus. In the first part of this article she talks about her experience in Epidaurus last August, when her performance was cancelled due to the official mourning because of the fires. Nana Mouskouri’s Farewell Concerts in Greece

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   The veteran singer Nana Mouskouri is in Athens this week for two farewell concerts today and tomorrow after of nearly half-a-century long career. The sold out concerts are taking place at the Herod Atticus Theatre as part of the Greek Festival. The concerts are also part of a tour which will take her to Australia, Asia, South America, the United States and Canada. From Manos Hatzidakis to Bob Dylan via jazz, gospels and so many more music genres, Mouskouri’ s distinctive voice has sold more than 300 million albums around the world. Besides music, Mouskouri was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1993, and the following year was elected a member of the European Parliament.

Irene Papas Honoured in Rome

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)   Veteran Greek actress Irene Papas was honoured with the “Rome Prize” on July 14 at the Ostia Antica ancient theatre outside the Italian capital.  Excerpts of the actress’ well-known films were shown before the presentation ceremony. “I do not know whether I should laugh or cry, I can only say that Athens will always be my mother, but Rome is at the same time my second mother, by my own choice,” Papas said. Culture Minister Mihalis Liapis, who paid an official visit to to Rome, attended the ceremony.
