Εκδηλώσεις “Ευρωπαϊκής Ημέρας Γλωσσών” (Βαρσοβία, 24-29/9/2012) – Συμμετοχή του Γραφείου Τύπου

Οι φετινές εκδηλώσεις της «Ευρωπαϊκής Ημέρας Γλωσσών 2012» πραγματοποιήθηκαν στη Βαρσοβία από τις 24 ως τις 29 Σεπτεμβρίου.
Το Γραφείο Τύπου, για μία ακόμη χρονιά, συμμετείχε στη διοργάνωση των εκδηλώσεων προβολής των ευρωπαϊκών γλωσσών, εκδηλώσεις που στοχεύουν στην ενημέρωση του πολωνικού κοινού για τον γλωσσικό και πολιτιστικό πλούτο των χωρών της Ευρώπης. Η Ευρωπαϊκή Ημέρα Γλωσσών (26 Σεπτεμβρίου) θεσπίστηκε από το Συμβούλιο της Ευρώπης το 2001.
Διοργανωτές των εκδηλώσεων ήταν οι ακόλουθες δεκαοκτώ χώρες, από τις οποίες οι περισσότερες είναι μέλη του EUNIC Cluster Βαρσοβίας (European Union National Institutes for Culture):
Ελλάδα (Γραφείο Τύπου Ελληνικής Πρεσβείας), Κύπρος (Πρεσβεία Κύπρου), Εσθονία (Πρεσβεία Εσθονίας), Ιρλανδία (Πρεσβεία Ιρλανδίας), Λιθουανία (Πρεσβεία Λιθουανίας), Βρετανία (British Council), Βέλγιο (Ινστιτούτο Βαλλονίας-Βρυξελλών), Δανία (Πολιτιστικό Ινστιτούτο Δανίας), Γερμανία (Goethe Institut), Πορτογαλία (Ινστιτούτο Camoes), Γαλλία (Γαλλικό Ινστιτούτο), Ισπανία (Instituto Cervantes), Ιταλία (Ιταλικό Ινστιτούτο), Τσεχία (Ινστιτούτο Τσεχίας), Ρουμανία (Ρουμανικό Πολιτιστικό Ινστιτούτο), Ρωσία (Ρωσικό Κέντρο Επιστήμης και Πολιτισμού) και Σλοβακία (Ινστιτούτο Σλοβακίας).
Μεταξύ των κύριων διοργανωτών ήταν, επίσης, το EUNIC Cluster Βαρσοβίας, η Αντιπροσωπεία της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής στην Πολωνία, το Γραφείο Πληροφόρησης στην Πολωνία του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου, το πολωνικό Ίδρυμα για την Ανάπτυξη του Εκπαιδευτικού Συστήματος, το Πανεπιστήμιο Βαρσοβίας και το Εκπαιδευτικό Τμήμα του Δήμου Βαρσοβίας. Στη διοργάνωση συμμετείχαν πολλοί άλλοι φορείς, όπως το πολωνικό Εθνικό Οπτικοακουστικό Αρχείο, οι Δημόσιες Βιβλιοθήκες της συνοικίας Praga και της συνοικίας Ochota (Δήμοι Βαρσοβίας), το πολωνικό Κέντρο για την Ανάπτυξη της Εκπαίδευσης, η πολωνική Κρατική Επιτροπή για την Πιστοποίηση της Επάρκειας της Πολωνικής ως Ξένης Γλώσσας κ.ά .
Οι εκδηλώσεις τελούσαν υπό την αιγίδα του πολωνικού Υπουργείου Εθνικής Παιδείας, του πολωνικού Υπουργείου Επιστήμης και Ανώτερης Εκπαίδευσης, της Δημάρχου Βαρσοβίας και του Πρύτανη του Πανεπιστημίου Βαρσοβίας.
Η απήχηση των εκδηλώσεων τις προηγούμενες χρονιές οδήγησε και φέτος στην διοργάνωση πολυήμερων εκδηλώσεων, με ποικίλο περιεχόμενο.

Η ελληνική συμμετοχή στις εκδηλώσεις περιελάμβανε:
Μάθημα ελληνικής γλώσσας πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Ινστιτούτο Πολωνικού Πολιτισμού του Πανεπιστημίου Βαρσοβίας στις 25 Σεπτεμβρίου, στο πλαίσιο μαθημάτων εκμάθησης (demo lessons) των γλωσσών και του πολιτισμού των συμμετεχουσών ευρωπαϊκών χωρών.
Η παράδοση του μαθήματος έγινε από την Iza Sak, απόφοιτο του Τμήματος Ελληνικών Σπουδών (Ινστιτούτο Διεπιστημονικών Σπουδών) του Πανεπιστημίου της Βαρσοβίας, η οποία πραγματοποιεί πρακτική άσκηση στο Γραφείο Τύπου. Το μάθημα παρακολούθησαν 50 περίπου μαθητές πολωνικών σχολείων μέσης εκπαίδευσης, οι οποίοι επέλεξαν την ελληνική γλώσσα από το σύνολο των σεμιναρίων ευρωπαϊκών γλωσσών.
Ελληνικό info–stand, όπου διανεμήθηκε τουριστικό υλικό (χάρτες και φυλλάδια του ΕΟΤ) και δόθηκαν πληροφορίες για τις δυνατότητες εκμάθησης της ελληνικής γλώσσας στην Πολωνία, λειτούργησε από τις 9.00 π.μ. έως τις 15.00 μ.μ. στις 25 Σεπτεμβρίου, στον προαύλιο χώρο της Παλαιάς Βιβλιοθήκης του Πανεπιστημίου της Βαρσοβίας, ένα από τα κεντρικότερα σημεία της πόλης.
Την ευθύνη της διοργάνωσης και της λειτουργίας του info-stand, το οποίο επισκέφτηκε πλήθος φοιτητών, μαθητών και άλλων Πολωνών, είχε η προϊσταμένη του Γραφείου Τύπου με την συνδρομή της αποφοίτου του Τμήματος Ελληνικών Σπουδών (Ινστιτούτο Διεπιστημονικών Σπουδών) του Πανεπιστημίου της Βαρσοβίας, Iza Sak.
Στο φεστιβάλ ταινιών που διοργανώθηκε στο πλαίσιο των εκδηλώσεων στο Ρωσικό Πολιτιστικό Ινστιτούτο (24-27 Σεπτεμβρίου) προβλήθηκε η εικονοκινητική ταινία «Δίολκος για 1.500 χρόνια», η οποία παρουσιάζει ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα επιτεύγματα της αρχαίας ελληνικής τεχνολογίας, την κορινθιακή Δίολκο (Ρωσικό Πολιτιστικό Ινστιτούτο, 24 Σεπτεμβρίου).
Για τη διοργάνωση της προβολής το Γραφείο Τύπου συνεργάστηκε με το Τεχνικό Επιμελητήριο Ελλάδας, το οποίο παραχώρησε την άδεια προβολής της ταινίας, καθώς και με τον Σύλλογο Ελλήνων Επιχειρηματιών Πολωνίας «Ερμής», ο οποίος παραχώρησε τους πολωνικούς υπότιτλους της ταινίας.
Παιχνίδι με την ελληνική γλώσσα στην διάρκεια city-game (29 Σεπτεμβρίου).
Η πραγματοποίηση πολλών παράλληλων εκδηλώσεων στη διάρκεια της εβδομάδας (24-29 Σεπτεμβρίου), όπως η ημερίδα με θέμα “ICT and Social Media in Language Education” (24 Σεπτεμβρίου), οι ψυχαγωγικές εκδηλώσεις, τα θεατρικά εργαστήρια, τα παιχνίδια δρόμου, οι διαδικτυακοί διαγωνισμοί, η προβολή των εκδηλώσεων μέσω ειδικής ιστοσελίδας, καθώς και από τους σημαντικούς φορείς που μετείχαν στη διοργάνωση, αλλά και από πολλά ΜΜΕ, η συνέντευξη τύπου (20 Σεπτεμβρίου), είχε ως αποτέλεσμα την προσέλευση πλήθους μαθητών, φοιτητών και άλλων επισκεπτών και συνέβαλε στην επιτυχία και των φετινών εκδηλώσεων, δίνοντας στο κοινό, σε ό,τι αφορά στην Ελλάδα, την ευκαιρία για επαφή με την ελληνική γλώσσα και τον πολιτισμό.

Προβολή της Ελλάδας από τον Πολωνικό Σιδηρόδρομο – Συμμετοχή του Γραφείου Τύπου στην ελληνική προβολή

Το Γραφείο Τύπου συμμετείχε στο πρόγραμμα του Πολωνικού Σιδηροδρόμου (PKP) για την προβολή ευρωπαϊκών χωρών στην διάρκεια του ευρωπαϊκού πρωταθλήματος ποδοσφαίρου “EURO 2012” και για ένα εξάμηνο.
Το πρόγραμμα περιλαμβάνει την προβολή του ευρωπαϊκού πρωταθλήματος ποδοσφαίρου “EURO 2012″ σε 20 τραίνα, 16 από τα οποία έχουν βαφτεί στα χρώματα της σημαίας των αντίστοιχων ευρωπαϊκών χωρών. Κάθε Σαββατοκύριακο τα τραίνα διασχίζουν κεντρική γέφυρα της Βαρσοβίας.
Το Σάββατο, 19 Μαίου πραγματοποιήθηκε παρέλαση 5 τραίνων με τα χρώματα της σημαίας της Ελλάδας, της Πολωνίας, της Ουκρανίας, της Τσεχίας και της Ρωσίας.
Το Γραφείο Τύπου συνεργάστηκε με τους εκπροσώπους του Πολωνικού Σιδηροδρόμου για την προβολή της ελληνικής σημαίας σε πολωνικό τραίνο.

Πρόγραμμα “Φράσις” του Εθνικού Κέντρου Βιβλίου για την στήριξη μεταφράσεων της ελληνικής γραμματείας στο εξωτερικό

Tο Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού και Τουρισμού ανέθεσε στο Εθνικό Κέντρο Βιβλίου (EKEBI) τη λειτουργία του νέου προγράμματος στήριξης μεταφράσεων «Φράσις», το οποίο φιλοδοξεί να μεταλαμπαδεύσει τον ελληνικό λόγο στο εξωτερικό μέσα από τη μετάφραση έργων της σύγχρονης και την παλαιότερης γραμματείας, της πνευματικής, επιστημονικής και καλλιτεχνικής δημιουργίας της χώρας μας σε ξένες γλώσσες.
Το πρόγραμμα αφορά σε όλα τα είδη του γραπτού λόγου. Έχει σχεδιαστεί και υλοποιείται άμεσα με την επιχορήγηση μεταφράσεων σε ποσοστό 100% σε ενδιαφερόμενους πολιτιστικούς φορείς, εκδοτικούς οίκους, πανεπιστήμια και εκπαιδευτικά ιδρύματα της αλλοδαπής.
Στόχος του προγράμματος είναι η όσο το δυνατόν πιο δυναμική παρουσία της Ελλάδας στις ξένες αγορές βιβλίου και, κατ’ επέκταση, η «συνάντηση» των Ελλήνων δημιουργών με ομοτέχνους τους αλλά και με το ευρύτερο αναγνωστικό κοινό σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα.

Program “Frasis” Greckiego Centrum Ksiązki na rzecz wsparcia tłumaczeń na języki obce twórczości greckiej
Greckie Centrum Książki (EKEBI) otrzymało od Ministerstwa Kultury i Turystyki Grecji  zadanie wdrożenia nowego programu wsparcia tłumaczeń “Frasis”. Projekt ten ma prowadzić do popularyzacji kultury greckiej za granicą w oparciu o tłumaczenia na języki obce dzieł literatury zarówno współczesnej jak i starszej, a także tłumaczenia tekstów reprezentujących duchowy, naukowy i artystyczny dorobek kraju.
Program obejmuje wszystkie rodzaje twórczości pisanej. Zgodnie z założeniem jest skierowany do zainteresowanych instytucji kulturalnych, wydawnictw, uniwersytetów i instytucji edukacyjnych za granicą i realizowany przy użyciu bezpośrednich dotacji na tłumaczenia w wysokości 100%.
Celem programu jest bardziej dynamiczna obecność Grecji na zagranicznych rynkach książki, a w szerszym kontekście utworzenie płaszczyzny kontaktu dla twórców greckich i zagranicznych, jak i również możliwość zaprezentowania ich dorobku szerszemu gronu czytelniczemu na świecie.

“European Day of Languages” (24-29/9/2011) – Greek events organized by the Press Office

The Press Office of the Greek Embassy in Warsaw once again participated in “European Day of Languages 2011” events, that took place in Warsaw from 24 till 29 September and aimed to inform Poles about the cultural and linguistic heritage of European countries.

Organizers were over eighteen countries, members of EUNIC Cluster Warsaw (European Union National Institutes of Culture), among them the Press Office of the Greek Embassy, cultural institutes and embassies of European countries, as well as  other institutions such as the European Commission Representation in Poland, the European Parliament Communication Office in Poland, the Polish Foundation for the Development of the Educational System, the University of Warsaw etc.
The program (www.edj.waw.pl) consisted of demo language lessons, seminars, European film festival, theatre workshops, city game, language picnic etc.
The Greek program of the events included:
Demo lesson of Greek language, that took place in the Institute of Foreign Languages of the University of Warsaw on the 27^th of September, as part of the demo-lessons of  languages and cultures of the participating countries.
Greek info stand, which was set in the University Campus of the Old Library of the University of Warsaw and provided touristic information on the 27^th September from 9 am until 3 pm.
The film “The Trojan Women” directed by Michael Cacoyannis (1971) was shown at the Russian Cultural Institute on the 29^th September, during the film festival organized in the Russian Cultural Institute (26-29 September) and the cinema Alchemia (25^th September):
A wide range of other events were organized during the week (24-29 September): a two-day conference “Language Competences for Professional and Personal Success inEurope”, entertainment activities, theatre workshops, city games, competitions on a special website. This year`s project attracted many students and other visitors and it can be considered as a perfect opportunity to experience the Greek language and culture.

Επίσκεψη ΑΝΥΠΕΞ Μαριλίζας Ξενογιαννακοπούλου στη Βαρσοβία (12/5/2011)

Η αναπληρωτής υπουργός Εξωτερικών Μαριλίζα Ξενογιαννακοπούλου πραγματοποίησε χθες επίσημη επίσκεψη στη Βαρσοβία, κατά την διάρκεια της οποίας συμμετείχε στη «Συνάντηση Φίλων Πολιτικής Συνοχής» και συναντήθηκε με τον πολωνό υφυπουργό Ευρωπαϊκών Θεμάτων Mikolaj Dowgielewicz.
Η συνάντηση Υπουργών Εξωτερικών και Ευρωπαϊκών Υποθέσεων («Συνάντηση Φίλων Πολιτικής Συνοχής») πραγματοποιήθηκε με πρωτοβουλία της Πολωνίας, η οποία θα ασκήσει την επερχόμενη Προεδρία της ΕΕ. Συμμετείχαν εκπρόσωποι από 14 χώρες μέλη της ΕΕ, με σκοπό τον συντονισμό της κατάρτισης του κοινοτικού προϋπολογισμού και την εξασφάλιση χρηματοδότησης της κοινοτικής πολιτικής της συνοχής.
Η συνάντηση διοργανώθηκε εν όψει της παρουσίασης από την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή στα τέλη Ιουνίου του πολυετούς προγράμματος της ΕΕ για τον κοινοτικό προϋπολογισμό.
Η αναπληρωτής υπουργός Μ. Ξενογιαννακοπούλου συμμετείχε στη συνάντηση με στόχο την οικοδόμηση του ρόλου της Ελλάδας στο θέμα του κοινοτικού προϋπολογισμού και των δημοσιονομικών προοπτικών της ΕΕ.
Μετά το πέρας της ανωτέρω συνάντησης, η αναπληρωτής υπουργός είχε γεύμα εργασίας με τον πολωνό επίτροπο της ΕΕ για θέματα προϋπολογισμού Janusz Lewandowski.
Το απόγευμα πραγματοποιήθηκε διμερής συνάντηση ανάμεσα στην αναπληρωτή υπουργό Μ. Ξενογιαννακοπούλου και τον πολωνό υπουργό Ευρωπαϊκών Θεμάτων Mikolaj Dowgielewicz. Οι δύο υπουργοί συζήτησαν για τις προτεραιότητες της Πολωνικής Προεδρίας στην ΕΕ, τις αποφάσεις που σχετίζονται με την σταθερότητα της ευρωζώνης, καθώς και για θέματα μετανάστευσης και την πολιτική γειτονίας.

Learn Greek Abroad On-Line

The teaching of Greek abroad will soon go online with a new e-learning programme being developed by the Centre of Intercultural and Migration Studies at the University of Crete.
The Centre is establishing a pilot Greek Diaspora school network that aims to eventually operate on an independent basis.
Greek teachers from schools abroad will visit Crete in July to participate in the creation of the project as partners. The teachers will participate in a two-week training programme at the University, following a 10-hour teleseminar briefing on Greek-language teaching methodology that they will undergo before their arrival. The programme is sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs.

Holocaust Memorial Day

The opening of the exhibition The Memorial: 16 Artists Propose, featuring projects that were submitted last year by 16 artists, as part of an international competition for the construction of a Holocaust Memorial of Greek Jews, took place at the Jewish Museum of Greece.
The competition was conducted by the Jewish Community of Athens and resulted in the selection of the work of artist DeAnna Maganias which was unveiled at a special event in May 2010. The museum is also organising a week-long programme of educational activities and memorial events, lasting until February 4.

The exhibition –which will remain open until August 2011- is part of events that have been planned for the Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day, co-organized by the Attica region and the Jewish community of Athens for January 26 and 27. A memorial service was held on the 27th of January, at the Athens Synagogue in Thisseio, to be followed by a speech by University of Athens History Professor, Hagen Fleischer.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Dimitris Droutsas issued a statement on the occasion of the Holocaust Memorial Day, in which he referred to Greece’s continuing efforts to preseve historical memory and educate younger generations. He further added that preparations are underway for a permanent Greek exhibition at the Auschwitz Museum.

Επίσκεψη Υπουργού Εξωτερικών Δημήτρη Δρούτσα στη Βαρσοβία (19/1/2011)

Ο Υπουργός Εξωτερικών Δημήτρης Δρούτσας πραγματοποίησε επίσημη επίσκεψη στην Πολωνία, κατά την διάρκεια της οποίας συναντήθηκε με τον πολωνό ομόλογό του, Radoslaw Sikorski, και στη συνέχεια με την Κοινοβουλευτική Ομάδα Ελληνο-Πολωνικής Φιλίας.
Κατά την συνάντησή του με τον πολωνό Υπουργό Εξωτερικών συζητήθηκαν θέματα διμερών σχέσεων, καθώς και θέματα ευρωπαϊκού ενδιαφέροντος εν όψει της Πολωνικής Προεδρίας της ΕΕ το δεύτερο εξάμηνο του 2011.

Christmas in Greece

Traditionally, the Christmas holiday period in Greece lasts 12 days, until January 6, which marks the celebration of the Feast of the Holy Theophany (Epiphany).
There are many customs associated with the Christmas holidays, some of which are relatively recent, “imported” from other parts of the world (like eating turkey on Christmas day and decorating the Christmas tree).
The modern Christmas tree entered Greece in the luggage of the country’s first king, Otto of Greece, who ascended to the throne in 1833 – yet, the tree did not become popular until the 1940s.
In the past, Greeks decorated small Christmas boats in honour of St. Nicholas. Today, they are increasingly choosing to decorate boats, instead of trees, reviving this age-old Christmas tradition. Undoubtedly, celebrating Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Greece is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Xmas: A Word of Greek Origin
Where did “Xmas” come from? Some transliterations of Greek spell Christos as “Xristos.” The “X” stood in for the first letter of the word Christ (ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ).
“Xmas” has been used for hundreds of years in religious writing, where the X represents the Greek letter X (chi). While in modern times Xmas is regarded as a kind of slang, it was originally considered to be a perfectly respectful.
Christmas (“Χριστούγεννα”), the Feast of the Nativity of Jesus is one of the most joyful days of the Greek Orthodox Church.
Christmas Elves
Greece’s hobgoblins are called “kallikántzari,” friendly but troublesome little creatures which look like elves. Kallikantzari live deep down inside the earth and come to surface only during the 12-day period from Christmas until Epiphany. While on the earth’s surface, they love to hide in houses, slipping down chimneys and frightening people in various ways.
Throughout Greece, there are customs and numerous rituals performed to keep these hobgoblins away. In Epirus, residents place twelve spindles in front of the fireplace to prevent the kalikantzari from climbing down the chimney.
On Christmas Eve, in the town of Grevena, people place a large log in the corner of the house and set it alight. As the fire burns, lasting until the Feast of the Epiphany, it protects the family from the naughty kalikantzari. On the island of Cephalonia, women burn incense at the front door of their houses making the sign of the cross in order to repel these undesirable “guests.”
The “kallikántzari” disappear on the day of Epiphany when all the waters are blessed, and they return to the earth’s core.
Sweets & Treats
Traditional culinary delights symbolise good luck in the New Year and adorn the white-clothed tables. “Melomakarona” (honey cookies) and “kourabiedes” (sugar cookies with almonds) are the most characteristic. In the past, melomakarona were made exclusively for Christmas, while kourabiedes were prepared for the New Year.
Today, this distinction is not observed anymore and both melomakarona and kourabiedes are prepared and consumed throughout the festive season.
Another traditional custom that dates back to the Byzantine times is the slicing of the Vassilopita (St.Basil’s pie or New Year Cake). The person who finds the hidden coin in his/her slice of the cake, is considered to be lucky for the rest of the year.
At the meal table there is also a special decorated round loaf called “Vasilopsomo” or St. Basil’s bread -which is really identical in form to the “Christopsomo” or “Christ bread” eaten on Christmas Day – and the “Photitsa” or “Lights’ bread” that is eaten on Epiphany.
“Kalanda” or Carols
The singing of Christmas carols (or kalanda, in Greek) is a custom which is preserved in its entirety to this day. On Christmas and New Year Eve, children go from house to house in groups of two or more singing the carols, accompanied usually by the sounds of the musical instrument “triangle,” but also guitars, accordions, lyres and harmonicas.

A Christmas spirit is taking over the squares and streets of the country’s major cities, as local authorities organise a variety of events and festivities, culminating with New Year’s Eve countdown parties in central squares.
Festivities in Athens revolve around Syntagma Square and its Christmas tree, with daily concerts throughout the season, while the National Garden turns into storybook Magical Forest for children.
Thessaloniki runs the country’s biggest Christmas village: the Helexpo pavilions are hosting Christmas Magic City, featuring shows, workshops and a big Christmas market.
The north-western city of Kastoria celebrates with “ragoutsaria,” the local carnival that starts on New Year’s Day, with every neighbourhood forming a carnival group, complete with brass band. In Agios Nikolaos, Crete, the New Year will come from the sea, with the New Year’s Eve party at the port, and Santa arriving on a boat.

Venues and clubs participate in the Christmas spirit with special holiday performances.

The Athens Concert Hall hosts the Bolshoi Theatre Academy on December 22-29, in a much-awaited performance of the Nutcracker, and the London Community Gospel Choir on December 27-28.
The recently inaugurated Onassis Cultural Centre presents Jean-Baptiste Thiérrée and Victoria Chaplin in their phantasmagoric yet poetic Invisible Circus, on December 28-30 and January 1-2.
At the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, on December 27 & 28, the Sounds of Christmas Go Baroque: a festive concert featuring Baroque Concertos.

Εκδηλώσεις “Ευρωπαϊκής Ημέρας Γλωσσών” (Βαρσοβία, 20-27/9/2010)- Συμμετοχή Γραφείου Τύπου Βαρσοβίας

Οι φετινές εκδηλώσεις της «Ευρωπαϊκής Ημέρας Γλωσσών 2010» πραγματοποιήθηκαν στη Βαρσοβία από τις 20 έως τις 27 Σεπτεμβρίου.
Το Γραφείο Τύπου, για μία ακόμη χρονιά, συμμετείχε στη διοργάνωση των εκδηλώσεων προβολής των ευρωπαϊκών γλωσσών, εκδηλώσεις που στοχεύουν στην ενημέρωση του πολωνικού κοινού για τον γλωσσικό και πολιτιστικό πλούτο των χωρών της Ευρώπης. Η Ευρωπαϊκή Ημέρα Γλωσσών θεσπίστηκε από το Συμβούλιο της Ευρώπης το 2001.
Διοργανωτές των εκδηλώσεων ήταν δεκατρείς χώρες, μέλη του EUNIC Cluster Βαρσοβίας (European Union National Institutes for Culture): Ελλάδα (Γραφείο Τύπου Ελληνικής Πρεσβείας), Εσθονία (Πρεσβεία Εσθονίας), Ιρλανδία (Πρεσβεία Ιρλανδίας), Μεγ. Βρετανία (British Council), Βέλγιο (Πρεσβεία Βελγίου), Δανία (Πολιτιστικό Ινστιτούτο Δανίας), Γερμανία (Goethe-Institut), Πορτογαλία (Ινστιτούτο Camoes), Γαλλία (Γαλλικό Ινστιτούτο), Ιταλία (Ιταλικό Ινστιτούτο), Αυστρία (Αυστριακό Ινστιτούτο), Ρουμανία (Ρουμανικό Ινστιτούτο), Ρωσία (Ρωσικό Κέντρο Επιστήμης και Πολιτισμού).
Στη διοργάνωση συμμετείχαν, επίσης, το EUNIC Cluster Βαρσοβίας, η Αντιπροσωπεία της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής στην Πολωνία, το πολωνικό Ίδρυμα για την Ανάπτυξη του Εκπαιδευτικού Συστήματος, το Πανεπιστήμιο Βαρσοβίας, το Εκπαιδευτικό Τμήμα του Δήμου Βαρσοβίας, το Κρατικό Εθνογραφικό Μουσείο στη Βαρσοβία, η Δημόσια Βιβλιοθήκη της συνοικίας Praga (Δήμος Βαρσοβίας), το πολωνικό Κέντρο για την Ανάπτυξη της Εκπαίδευσης, η πολωνική Κρατική Επιτροπή για την Πιστοποίηση της Επάρκειας της Πολωνικής ως Ξένης Γλώσσας. Οι εκδηλώσεις τελούσαν υπό την αιγίδα του πολωνικού Υπουργείου Εθνικής Παιδείας, του πολωνικού Υπουργείου Επιστήμης και Ανώτερης Εκπαίδευσης, της Δημάρχου Βαρσοβίας και της Πρυτάνεως του Πανεπιστημίου Βαρσοβίας.
Η απήχηση των εκδηλώσεων τις προηγούμενες χρονιές οδήγησε τους διοργανωτές στην απόφαση για την φετινή διοργάνωση πολυήμερων εκδηλώσεων, με ποικίλο περιεχόμενο.

On Line Learning
The Filoglossia+ consists of an educational multimedia CD-ROMs series for learning Greek as a foreign language, supported by English and addressed to beginners with little or no previous knowledge of Greek.
“Filoglossia” means fondness for language learning and the programme is mainly based on the communicative approach, focusing on the production and comprehension of both oral and written speech. “Filoglossia” is designed by the Institute for Language and Speech Processing (ILSP).

• Looking Ahead
A new strategic plan for the support of Greek language learning in Greece and abroad was the focus of debates at an International Workshop on Greek Language and Linguistic Training, organized by the Centre for the Greek Language held from June 28 to 30 in Thessaloniki, with the participation of 60 Greek and Foreign linguists.
On the occasion, Education, Life-long Learning and Religious Affairs minister Anna Diamantopoulou said that the establishment of a National Council for the Greek Language would help draw a comprehensive strategy.
Creating an organization, similar to the German Goethe Institute or the British Council, which would operate with branches around the world could be an important vehicle to promote Greek language, culture, and history learning. The minister also announced that a conference is to be held in October focusing on the Education of the Diaspora.

It has been observed that relations of the Diaspora with the Greek language have been weakening over the years – especially with second and third generation migrants.

To help redress this, three friends from Chicago have designed an on-line Greek dictionary aiming to help English-speaking emigrants keep in touch with the language of the forefathers.

Greektionary.com was created to provide everyone with an opportunity to improve their Greek vocabulary on a daily basis.

Three words (beginner, intermediate and advanced) are chosen each day and displayed with their translations, pronunciation, examples, and recorded audio files (Mp3s). Those interested can sign-up and receive free Greek words everyday by e-mail!

Για 6^η συνεχή χρονιά το Φεστιβάλ Αιγαίου υποδέχεται τους φίλους της τέχνης στο ιστορικό θέατρο «Απόλλων» της Σύρου και σε πείσμα των δύσκολων καιρών, παρουσιάζει, φέτος, ένα δυνατό πρόγραμμα, με διεθνή ακτινοβολία και τη συμμετοχή καταξιωμένων καλλιτεχνών από όλο τον κόσμο.
Το Φεστιβάλ ανοίγει αυλαία στις 14 Ιουλίου με μια εντυπωσιακή παραγωγή της όπερας Κάρμεν του Μπιζέ, η οποία πραγματοποιείται σε συνεργασία με την Εθνική Λυρική Σκηνή. Διάσημοι σολίστ και πολυάριθμοι συντελεστές από τις μεγαλύτερες λυρικές σκηνές του κόσμου συναντιούνται στη Σύρο και συμπράττουν για την πραγματοποίηση της απαιτητικής αυτής παραγωγής.
Στις 15 και 17 Ιουλίου, ο ζωντανός θρύλος του κλαρινέτου Στάνλι Ντράκερ -ο επί 60 συνεχή έτη πρώτος κλαρινετίστας της διάσημης αμερικανικής ορχήστρας New York Philharmonic- και η Ναόμι Ντράκερ, συμπράττουν ως σολίστ με την ορχήστρα  Pan-European Philharmonia στο κοντσερτίνο για κλαρινέτο του Weber και στο κοντσέρτο για δύο κλαρινέτα του Krommer, υπό τη διεύθυνση του Πήτερ Τιμπόρις. Στο δεύτερο μέρος  της συναυλίας ο προσκεκλημένος μαέστρος Φράνσις Μπαρντό θα διευθύνει το Ρέκβιεμ του , με τη συμμετοχή εννιά χορωδιακών συνόλων από την Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό . Σολίστ στο Ρέκβιεμ του Fauré θα είναι η σοπράνο Ιλάνα Λαπαλάινεν και ο μπάσος βαρύτονος Ρέντα Ελ Βακίλ.
Στις 21 Ιουλίου, η κορυφαία ερμηνεύτρια, Μαρία Φαραντούρη, μας παρασύρει με τη φωνή της σ’ ένα μαγικό μουσικό ταξίδι ερμηνεύοντας μελοποιημένη ποίηση, έργα νεότερων Ελλήνων συνθετών, αλλά και ξένα τραγούδια από το παγκόσμιο ρεπερτόριο. Τη συνοδεύει στο πιάνο η Ιρίνα Βαλεντίνοβα.
Μετά την περσινή επιτυχία, ο χορογράφος Ρενάτο Τσαννέλα επιστρέφει στη Σύρο, υπογράφοντας ένα φαντασμαγορικό Γκαλά Χορού με τίτλο Μύθος και Πάθος στο οποίο συμμετέχουν τα μεγαλύτερα αστέρια του μπαλέτου από τα κορυφαία θέατρα της Ευρώπης, αλλά και Έλληνες σολίστ. Για τρεις παραστάσεις, στις 23, 24 και 25 Ιουλίου, οι πρώτοι χορευτές και σολίστ από το Μπαλέτο της Όπερας της Βιέννης, το Μπαλέτο του Βερολίνου, το Εθνικό Μπαλέτο της Αγγλίας και το Μπαλέτο της Εθνικής Λυρικής Σκηνής θα ερμηνεύσουν αποσπάσματα από έργα των  Roland Petit, Roland Savkovic, Marius Petipa, Kenneth McMillan και Renato Zanella σε μουσική Adam, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Brian Eno, Massenet, κ.α.
Επίσης, για πρώτη χρονιά, στο πλαίσιο του Φεστιβάλ Αιγαίου, οι διοργανωτές προχωρούν στη δημιουργία ενός νέου, σημαντικού θεσμού υπό τον τίτλο Greek Opera Studio. Πρόκειται για ένα θερινό εκπαιδευτικό πρόγραμμα φωνητικής που απευθύνεται σε επαγγελματίες, αλλά και σε προχωρημένους σπουδαστές όπερας από πανεπιστήμια και ακαδημίες του κόσμου. Στο πλαίσιο του Greek Opera Studio θα παραδίδονται ιδιαίτερα μαθήματα φωνητικής, μαθήματα καθοδήγησης στη σκηνική παρουσία και στην κινησιολογία, καθώς και προετοιμασία στην γλώσσα της εκάστοτε όπερας. Οι νεαροί καλλιτέχνες που θα λάβουν μέρος αυτή τη σαιζόν, θα καλύψουν σολιστικούς ρόλους της Κάρμεν υπό τη καθοδήγηση και τη διδασκαλία του μαέστρου και καλλιτεχνικού διευθυντή της “Virginia Opera”, Πήτερ Μαρκ, ενώ ταυτόχρονα θα έχουν τη δυνατότητα συμμετέχουν στη χορωδία που θα τραγουδήσει στην παραγωγή της Κάρμεν. Στις 20 Ιουλίου οι σπουδαστές του Greek Opera Studio θα παρουσιάσουν ένα Γκαλά Όπερας  με αποσπάσματα και άριες από την Κάρμεν. Το Greek Opera Studio, ιδρύτρια του οποίου είναι η σοπράνο Ιλάνα Λαπαλάινεν, θα παρέχει στους νέους καλλιτέχνες πολύτιμες γνώσεις που θα τους βοηθήσουν να καλλιεργήσουν τις μουσικές τους δεξιότητες και θα αποτελέσουν σημαντικές βάσεις για την μελλοντική επαγγελματική τους σταδιοδρομία.
Τέλος, το Φεστιβάλ, φέτος εγκαινιάζει σειρά απογευματινών συναυλιών, με ελεύθερη είσοδο, στον Ορθόδοξο Ναό του Αγίου Νικολάου, όπου χορωδιακά σύνολα θα παρουσιάζουν θρησκευτικά έργα φωνητικής μουσικής.

Deficit down by 46%

According to the preliminary data available for the state budget implementation for the first six months of 2010, on a fiscal basis the deficit presented a 46% year-on-year decline against a targeted 39.5% in the government’s economic policy programme.

The fiscal result of the first six months of 2010 is due to both restriction of expenditures and revenue increases. Nevertheless, these do not yet fully reflect all fiscal measures included in the government’s programme for 2010.

Furthermore, ordinary budget expenditures declined by 12.8% year-on-year against a targeted 5.5% reduction and primary expenditures decreased by 12.7% against a targeted 5.4% annual decrease.

Stability programme on “the right track”

The team of experts from the so-called “troika” (European Commission, the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank), after completing their monitoring of the progress of the stability programme, said that the latter is “on track on all of the dimensions.”
 The government is ahead of the deficit reduction target set in the plan for this year and tax hikes are boosting revenues, according to the team.
The government is also making progress on more long-term economic reforms, which can help its future finances, they added.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister George Papandreou, who attended the European Union Summit in Brussels yesterday, underlined that “his government is determined to go ahead with important and difficult reforms,” in order to put the country on the right path for achieving its goals.

Athens & Epidaurus Festival 2010

It seems that ages have gone by since Maria Callas stunned the audience by performing ‘Norma’ at the Epidaurus theatre as part of events celebrating the Greek festival in 1960. The 2010 Greek Festival, which opens today, encompasses a variety of artistic expressions.  

Its aim is to present contemporary artists from around the globe and acquaint the world public with both innovative and pervasive trends of modern artistic creations. 
The festival spans from June to mid –August with old and new venues hosting the events, such as the Herodus Attikus theatre, the Benaki Museum, and the Building H at the Peiraios 260 complex.
This year music lovers will have the opportunity to enjoy Rufus Wainwright in a one-man-show on June 5 at the Lycabettus Hill Theatre.
In the first half, he will present his newly- released album, while in the second, he will play major hits from his entire career.

Αφιέρωμα από το Δεύτερο Πρόγραμμα 103,7 σε συνεργασία με το ΕΚΕΒΙ
Φέτος συμπληρώνονται 100 χρόνια από τη γέννηση του μεγάλου ποιητή και το 2010 έχει κηρυχθεί «Έτος Νίκου Καββαδία». Ο θαλασσινός ποιητής, ναυτικός, Νίκος Καββαδίας ή «Κόλλιας» γεννήθηκε στις 11 Ιανουαρίου 1910 σε μια επαρχιακή πόλη του Χαρμπίν στη Μαντζουρία, από γονείς Κεφαλλονίτες. Το Νοέμβριο του 1928, έβγαλε το πρώτο του ναυτικό φυλλάδιο ως “ναυτόπαις” και μπαρκάρισε τον επόμενο χρόνο στο φορτηγό “Άγιος Νικόλαος”. Από το 1954 μέχρι και το 1974, ταξίδευε διαρκώς με πολύ μικρά διαλείμματα. Τα πιο σημαντικά του έργα: Μαραμπού (1933), Πούσι (1947), Τραβέρσο (1975),Το ημερολόγιο ενός τιμονιέρη: Αθησαύριστα πεζογραφήματα και ποιήματα, επιμέλεια Guy (Michel) Saunier, Βάρδια (1954), Λι (1987), Του πολέμου/Στ’ άλογό μου (1987), έμειναν χαραγμένα στη μνήμη και στην καρδιά των Ελλήνων και μεγαλώνουν γενιές σε σχολεία και πανεπιστήμια.
Το Δεύτερο Πρόγραμμα 103,7 σε συνεργασία με το Εθνικό Κέντρο Βιβλίου παρουσιάζει από τις 31 Μαΐου μέχρι τις 4 Ιουνίου ένα αφιέρωμα στον σπουδαίο Έλληνα ποιητή. Κάθε ημέρα, από τις 7 το απόγευμα μέχρι τις 10 το βράδυ, το έργο του Νίκου Καββαδία μέσα από το μάτια των ανθρώπων που τον έζησαν, τον μελέτησαν, τον μελοποίησαν και τον τραγούδησαν.

PM George Papandreou interviews at “El Pais” & “Al Jazeera”

Prime Minister Georges Papandreou was interviewed by the Spanish daily “El Pais” (May 23).

In a three page interview, the premier answered questions regarding the economic situation in Greece noting that the euro-zone has reached a tipping point which will bring it before an “historic reflection period.”
In the case of Greece, the international community did not react in a timely manner, it did not admit that the currency was under attack, and “there was the same fear as when a buffalo leaves the herd.”
Today, the country’s austerity plan is on the right track, but it is not enough if it is to be left without European support. For Papandreou, the support is necessary for all members so to act as deterrent of speculation. “Spain and Portugal were not in a bad situation yet they fell victims of the ambient hysteria.”
In related news, in an interview with Al Jazeera’s Barnaby Phillips  on May 20 in Athens, Papandreou said that Greece will eventually emerge from the crisis with a more viable economy, determined to say “never again.”

Festival of Greek Culture in Tarnowskie Gory (Silesia) 11-28 May 2010

A festival of Greek Culture is taking place in Tarnowskie Gory of Silesia region (southern Poland) from the 11th till the 28th May. The 13th edition of the festival, organized by the Cultural Centre of Tarnowskie Gory, is under the auspices of the Greek Embassy in Warsaw and has been realised with the cooperation of the Press Office.
Various aspects of Greek culture are promoted during the festival, which includes a rich programme of events of high quality, such as lectures, music, cinema, theatre, performances, concerts, dance, discussion-panels, painting, cuisine. Many Greeks that live in Poland and work successfully in various fields (artistic, scientific or economic), participate in this festival, presenting the results of their efforts.
At the official opening of the festival on the 14th May, a message by the Greek Ambassador, Gabriel Coptsidis, who praised the great interest of cultural institutions towards Greece and the high level of their knowledge about Greek history and culture, was read. The Press Attache, Maria Mondelou, has hold a speech, stressing the importance of cultural events dedicated to Greece that are successfully organised in Poland.

Tarnogórskie Makaty, w tym roku poświęcone będą w całości Grecji, a zwłaszcza spuściźnie kulturowej starożytnej Grecji, jak i dorobkowi w tej sferze współczesnego państwa greckiego. Imprezy w ramach XIII Tarnogórskich Makat odbędą się w dniach od 11 do 28 maja. Poprzednie edycje festiwalu poświęcone były m.in. kulturze: Japonii, Litwy, Czech, Węgier i Izraela. Głównym celem wydarzenia jest przybliżenie mieszkańcom naszego miasta i nie tylko, dziedzictwa innych kultur.

Meeting with Obama

Prime Minister George Papandreou met with US President Barack Obama in Washington yesterday.
After the meeting Papandreou said that the US is willing to work with the European Union to regulate the international financial system so speculators cannot target countries with troubled economies.
The premier said  that the issue of speculation will be discussed at the G20 summit in Canada, in June. The two leaders also discussed foreign policy issues such as the Cyprus issue, the integration of Western Balkans into Euro-Atlantic institutions, as well as Greece’s relations with Turkey.

Visa Waiver

Furthermore, the US side announced that Greece will be included in the ‘visa waiver’ programme, thus enabling Greek citizens to travel to the US without a visa.
Papandreou termed the visa waiver “a vote of confidence” to Greece and noted that the Greek government is determined to respond to its obligations and cooperate closely at international level on the tackling of terrorism.

Papandreou’s Op-ed

In an op-ed published in the International Herald Tribune (IHT), Papandreou notes that the Greek case is not an outlier, but one more flare-up in a broken system of financial regulation and predatory behaviour.
“If global economic growth is to be sustainable, we need better coordination and greater solidarity between nations… We must now establish and enforce clear rules to contain the inordinate power of markets over our national economies and our common currency – not for Greece’s sake, but for Europe’s,” he stresses.

Online petition to save department of Greek Studies at King`s College London

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) A petition has been submitted in an effort to persuade King’s College London not to dismantle the department of Byzantine & Modern Greek Studies at the university.
“We would like to express our deep concerns over the projected dismemberment of the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at King’s College London. […]

The great strength of King’s has always been that it is the only university in the UK to offer a combined programme in Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, thus  emphasising the importance of continuity through the centuries,” reads the petition which may be found at:
